The Orlando Magic plan to take a measured approach with regard to Glen Davis' rehabilitation from a broken left foot, reports Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel: "The Magic tell me they will be 'overly cautious' with Davis, which likely means he will join the [2013/14] season in progress."
The Magic's training camp opens on October 1st at Amway Center. After an eight-game preseason campaign, the regular season begins on October 29th with a visit to the Indiana Pacers.
Davis, 27, was Orlando's second-leading scorer and rebounder when he broke his left foot in a collision with New York Knicks swingman Iman Shumpert less than five minutes into Orlando's 113-97 loss to New York on January 30th. Schmitz's story focuses on the battle between Davis and Tobias Harris, whom the Magic acquired after Davis' season-ending injury, for Orlando's starting power forward job.
Another option at power forward in case Davis isn't ready once the season begins is free-agent signee Jason Maxiell, and Schmitz says the Magic signed the eight-year veteran precisely as "insurance" against Davis' health.
Davis had surgery to repair the broken bone one February 1st, but underwent a second procedure in early July to replace a screw that doctors inserted during the first operation. At the time, the Magic said Davis "is expected to resume basketball-related activity later this summer."
