Domination in the paint

Continuing a trend they set in their first three preseason matchups, the Magic had little trouble scoring in the painted area Wednesday. Orlando outscored visiting Flamengo, 56-38, in the paint, including a lopsided 22-6 in the opening quarter. While they were only able to score 16 points there in the following two quarters, they finished strong, outscoring the Brazilian side, 18-6, in the fourth quarter.

"Well, I think it started early," said coach Jacque Vaughn when asked about his teams success there. "I think, whether it's Nik [Vucevic] establishing himself, and we've talked about having the ability to get to the rim. We want to be aggressive and make it tough on the opponents and part of that is driving the basketball. And sometimes it won't look pretty, but overall we want to be aggressive in what we do."

After averaging 38.1 points per game in the paint last season, it's good to see the Magic attacking at a high rate. They have the personnel to get to the rim when they want, and with the free-flowing style offense they expect to run, they could see many attempts in the paint every night.

Green makes Magic debut

After missing the first three contests with a hyperextended left knee, offseason pickup Willie Green made his preseason debut with the team. Green, who started at shooting guard, finished the night with 11 points in just under 20 minutes of action.

Coach Vaughn was impressed with Green's debut. "I thought he was good on both ends of the floor," said Vaughn, who also praised Green's work on defense: "He gave us a physicality on the defensive end of the floor. He communicates, he helps his teammates."

Overall, Green's play was very encouraging. While his numbers don't jump off the page, his understanding of the offense, and willingness to help his teammates on both ends, will help the team. As the season moves on, his role on the court might end up being minimal, but his impact off the floor could be one of the biggest on the team.

Gordon making strides

Despite coming off the bench for the first time this preseason, the electrifying rookie Aaron Gordon had arguably his best game yet. His 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and one block represented preseason highs for the Arizona product, and he was able to show off his great motor on both ends of the floor. His strong performance was the next step for the rookie to take, and just a glimmer into what the team could get from him as he continues to develop.

Coach Vaughn was again happy with what he saw from his top pick. "I just think overall he's continuing to learn," said Vaughn. "It's his fourth game. And only the third, fourth, or whatever game this is for our guys, and different situations are presenting themselves. What you do feel is his aggressiveness on the floor, whether it's going for an offensive rebound or playing post defense."

Gordon brings a lot of good tools to the table, and will obviously continue to grow as the season wears on. While his shot is still somewhat of an issue, his motor and instincts on both ends are going to keep him on the floor, especially early in the season. The sky is the limit for Gordon, and he's just getting started.

The Magic hosted the Brazilian league champions on Wednesday night, taking care of business in relatively easy fashion.

After opening their eight game preseason slate with three road games, the Orlando Magic returned home to face Brazilian league champions Flamengo on Wednesday night. The Magic improved their preseason record to 3-1 with a 106-88 victory at home.

Unlike their previous two games in Indiana and Charlotte, the Magic were able to get off to a quick start, leading for much of the first quarter. Veteran guard Willie Green made his first appearance of the preseason, scoring six of his 11 points in the opening quarter. The Magic were effective attacking the basket, scoring 22 of their 34 opening quarter points in the painted area.

After a strong opening quarter, the Magic saw Flamengo find their groove again late, cutting the Magic's lead to 55-49 going into the halftime break. The Magic weren't as successful in the paint in the second quarter, making just five of their 13 attempts, compared to 11-of-16 in the first. Nikola Vucevic lead all Magic men in scoring with 13, while Marcelinho Machado scored 15 for the Brazilian side.

Coming out of halftime, the two swapped baskets early, before Orlando was able to begin stretching the lead out more thanks to continued strong play from Nik Vucevic on both ends of the floor. Despite being outscored 16-6 in the paint, the Magic were able to extend their lead back up to 12, 84-72, thanks to seven point quarters from both Vucevic and Luke Ridnour.

Heading into the final 12 minutes of action, all the Magic had to do was hold on. The Magic were able to increase their lead to as many as 21 before the final buzzer.

Vucevic lead all Magic men, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds en route to his first double-double of the preseason. Rookie Aaron Gordon followed closely, finishing with 15 on the night. Tobias Harris scored 14, with Ridnour and Green finishing with 11 each. Andrew Nicholson rounded out the Magic men in double figures, finishing with 10 on the night.

Flamengo was lead by Machado, who tied Vucevic with a game high 20 points. Nicolas Laporovittola scored 15, while Jerome Meyinsse finished with 13. Olivinha was the final Flamengo member in double figures, finishing with 11.

Green returns

After missing the Orlando Magic's first three games preseason games due to a hyperextended left knee, veteran guard Willie Green will be available for the Magic on Wednesday night when they host the Brazilian league champions Flamengo. Orlando claimed Green, 33, off waivers from the Los Angeles Clippers during the offseason to bring another veteran presence to a young Magic roster.

"He brings a sense of direction to any part of your game. He's been around."
Kyle O'Quinn on Willie Green

Green said that it's "going to feel good" to be back out on the court tonight after a minor setback at the end of training camp. Even though he hasn't been on the court, Green has been traveling with the team and feels as though he's helped them with his vocal leadership, without feeling like he was "preaching" to the rookies.

Big man Kyle O`Quinn praised Green for the direction that he brings the team. "He brings a sense of direction to any part of your game," said O'Quinn. "He's been around. Last year he was on a playoff team, he's been around the league's best bigs, so he can help us out as young bigs and the guards. He's guarded the best."

On the court Green's impact might be little, but off the court he's going to be a vital member of this Magic team. He's been through it all, so he can bring forth the experiences that a young team may need to know as they continue to grow.

No scouting reports on Flamengo

Head coach Jacque Vaughn will treat Wednesday's game like any other, despite the unique nature of his team's opponent.

"Well, the great thing is we'll approach this game similar to what we've done so the preseason," said Vaughn. "Really being concerned about how we're playing. Really, this is a great opportunity where we won't give our guys a scouting report today."

Vaughn feels as though this game is an opportunity for the team to "lean on the concepts we've talked about and situations where they'll present themselves, they'll have no warning of it." He wants the team to be able to "foundationally cover it with the things we've talked about."

O'Quinn added to that point, saying, "That just goes to show you that he [Vaughn] trusts us to trust the gameplan. Our gameplan is good enough to win and going in playing our type of basketball, we should come out on top."

It's a unique game and situation for the team, but yet another potentially great learning experience. Vaughn talked about Flamengo's free-flowing offense, so it'll be interesting to see how the Magic handle that on the defensive end. Also watch to see if Orlando can to push the pace, something that Flamengo coach José Alves Neto has said he doesn't want to happen.
