Orlando's leading scorer from the 2012/13 season made his début Sunday, but he couldn't lead his team past the hot-shooting Suns.

The Orlando Magic's frustrating slide continued Sunday in a 104-96 loss to the Phoenix Suns. The loss is Orlando's fourth straight and eighth in its last nine games; were it not for a narrow win against a banged-up Milwaukee Bucks squad with just eight players on November 13th, the Magic might be riding a nine-game losing streak.

"You give them credit offensively," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said of his opponents Sunday. "They had some shot-makers out there, guys that they got the ball in their hands and they made plays and made shots for their team."

Goran Dragić stepped up as one such shot- and play-maker: the five-year veteran poured in 23 points and 13 assists, and he scored Phoenix's last seven points to put the game out of reach for Orlando.

Here's a look at the stories that developed Sunday.

Harris returns

Orlando welcomed combo forward Tobias Harris back to its lineup on Sunday. Harris made his season début after missing five weeks with a high ankle sprain. In 16 minutes off the bench, the third-year player shot 3-of-8 for six points and one rebound.

"It felt great, checking in, getting back in the flow of things," Harris said at his locker stall after the game, just after removing his feet from a bucket of ice.

Harris understands that coming back from an injury is a process; he doesn't expect to be his old self right away. The Magic would likely prefer him to return to form sooner rather than later: he made a name for himself in Orlando after the Magic acquired him at the trading deadline, leading the Magic in scoring with 17.3 points per game.

"Coach thinks my advantage is at the three. If that's the role that he wants me to play, then I'm going to play it to the best of my ability."
Tobias Harris

The Magic used Harris primarily at power forward in his first half-season with the team, both because of the mismatches his speed creates at that position but also out of necessity, as Glen Davis had already sustained a season-ending foot injury by the time Orlando traded for Harris. With Davis now healthy, Harris played exclusively at small forward Sunday.

"I think there's advantages at each position, playing either the three or the four, but Coach thinks my advantage is at the three," Harris said. "If that's the role that he wants me to play, then I'm going to play it to the best of my ability."

After the game, Vaughn explained his philosophy regarding where Harris might play.

"I think you'll see him at both [forward] positions," Vaughn said. "Could be on different nights, matchup-wise. We'll see how our rhythm is once we get everyone completely healthy and we'll have to find a balance with both units. That could be him playing three or four."

Nicholson excels

The Magic haven't been able to find a consistent role for backup power forward Andrew Nicholson in recent games, given their opponents' tendency to go small at that position. After getting just six garbage-time minutes Wednesday in a loss to the Miami Heat, Nicholson played 19 minutes in the Miami rematch Saturday and another 26 on Sunday.

Against the Suns, Nicholson had his best game of the year, tallying 19 points, eight rebounds, and a career-best three three-pointers. He had missed all 11 of his trey attempts over Orlando's previous nine games.

"He's a guy that's been very in tune with what we're trying to do," Vaughn said of Nicholson. "He's trying to get better every day. He takes the approach of trying to get better every day. Tonight his number was called and he performed really well for us. He took the challenge defensively and offensively was good for us as well."

Synergy between Davis and Harris

Prior to Sunday, Davis and Harris had never played on the same side in an NBA game. The pair looked to work together well on a few occasions, even in just a few moments; though I tend to think Harris is best at power forward, he could work well at small forward with Davis around to create space for him.

Davis assisted on Harris' first basket of the season. Facing up from the right elbow extended in delayed transition, Davis waited for Harris to cut from the weak side and hit him in traffic with an overhead pass. Harris caught the ball and laid it in over the outstretched arm of Suns forward P.J. Tucker.

The Magic outscored the Suns by four points with Davis and Harris on the floor together.

In the second quarter, Davis set a downscreen for Harris as the third-year pro came to the right wing to take a Jameer Nelson pass. Davis' screen kept Marcus Morris from challenging Harris' shot, which found the bottom of the net.

As Vaughn expands his playbook, I'd be curious to see Harris and Davis operate together in pick-and-rolls, especially if they can force switches on those plays. It's not difficult to imagine Davis rolling hard to the rim and sealing off Harris' defender with two feet in the paint for an easy score.

According to NBA.com/stats, the Magic outscored the Suns by four points with Davis and Harris on the floor together. That figure is promising when one considers that Orlando ultimately lost by eight.

Suns accomplish rare feat

Phoenix earned the easy victory Sunday despite making only one free throw. According to the Elias Sports Bureau via via John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com, the Suns became the first team since the New Orleans Jazz in 1977 to win a game with just one freebie.

Phoenix went 1-of-3 from the foul line Sunday. The lack of foul calls--the teams combined for only 29 personal fouls and 17 free throw attempts--meant Sunday's matinée ended one hour and 59 minutes after tipoff.

Orlando dropped its fourth straight game Sunday in large part because it couldn't contain the Slovenian point guard.

The Orlando Magic dropped their fourth straight game Sunday, 104-96, against the Phoenix Suns, their first loss to Phoenix in Orlando in six years. The Suns' backcourt of Goran Dragić (23 points, 13 assists, and no turnovers) and Gerald Green (20 pointsand eight rebounds) tormented Orlando with their transition speed and shot-making, while Marcus Morris added 16 in reserve.

Nikola Vučević led the Magic with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Arron Afflalo scored 16 to continue his strong start to the season. Andrew Nicholson scored 19 points off Orlando's bench.

In his first game of the season, Magic forward Tobias Harris provided six points and one rebound off the bench.

Goran Dragić got Phoenix off to a great start, scoring or assisting on each of its first eight baskets to propel the visitors to a 19-13 lead after six minutes and change. Dragić's ability to push the pace in transition got the Suns into their sets early, and from there he managed to break Orlando down off the dribble and get into the paint, further scrambling Orlando's defense.

The Suns built their lead to 10 points off a Marcus Morris jumper with 1:48 to go in the period, and though Orlando closed the lead to six less than a minute later, Morris hit jumpers on each of the Suns' next two possessions to put Phoenix up 10 after one period. Three-point shooting proved to a key difference: Gerald Green sank three triples in the period, all off Dragić passes, and Dragić added one of his own. In contrast, the Magic went just 1-of-6 on threes in the first quarter.

Orlando made a run in the second period with Andrew Nicholson in the game. The second-year big man scored eight straight Magic points with a pair of threes and a hook shot, with his second triple bringing the Magic to within three of Phoenix. Though his offense ignited Orlando, his defense was no less impressive, as when he rotated to stonewall a driving Green, who had gotten loose along the left baseline. Nicholson got to where he needed to on time, and the elevated to body Green without fouling, a great defensive play.

The Suns regained control, however, as Dragić re-asserted himself. On one three-possession stretch, the Slovenian combo guard scored a driving layup and then assisted on two dunks, the second of which put Phoenix up 10 points.

Suns forward P.J. Tucker closed the half with a key bucket, sinking a three-pointer with nine seconds to play to put Phoenix up nine points; the Magic had stymied Phoenix for 22 seconds on the possession, but managed to lose track of Tucker in the left corner as the shot clock wound down. A stop there and a fast-break conversion at the other end would have had Orlando down by four at the conclusion of the half: instead, its deficit was nine points.

The Magic worked to cut the deficit in the third quarter, feeding Nikola Vučević in the post repeatedly against the Suns' inexperienced low-post defenders. Vučević scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the period, but Orlando never drew closer than three points: after Afflalo drilled three foul shots to cut the deficit to three, Phoenix went on a 14-6 run. E`Twaun Moore helped the quarter end on a positive note for the Magic, hitting a catch-and-shoot triple off penetration from Victor Oladipo to draw to within eight points. For the second straight period, the Magic managed to shave a single point off Phoenix's lead; they would need to take command on the fourth quarter to have a chance at the win.

Behind Nicholson, the Magic nearly did just that. His third three-pointer of the game trimmed the Suns' lead to three with 3:30 to go, and after a Channing Frye jumper, the St. Bonaventure product made two free throws to make it three points again. But Frye responded with a jump hook and then Afflalo turned the ball over. Following a Suns timeout, Dragić drove by Jameer Nelson with ease and made a layup, putting Phoenix up seven with less than two minutes to go.

On the Suns' next possession, he drilled a three-pointer to put the visitors up 10 with 1:18 to play, effectively ending the Magic's chances of earning a win.

For the second night in a row, the Magic's inability to get stops when it mattered most submarined a comeback effort.

Orlando's leading scorer a year ago will be in uniform Sunday against Phoenix.

The Orlando Magic have activated combo forward Tobias Harris for Sunday's game against the Phoenix Suns. Harris, who has missed the Magic's first 12 games with a sprained left ankle sustained in the preseason, went through a pregame workout to determine if he could play. He passed that test and will be available against Phoenix.

Kyle O'Quinn, who has a sprained right ankle, also went through a pregame workout. He did not respond well to it and will not be available. Orlando deactivated the second-year center to make room for Harris on the active roster.

Harris averaged 17.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.3 combined steals and blocks for Orlando after arriving from the Milwaukee Bucks via a February trade.

Harris' return comes one night after Glen Davis made his season début. Once O'Quinn returns, Orlando will be at full health for the first time all season.

On the second night of a back-to-back, Orlando faces the Suns, who are not so different from the Magic.

One night after a two-point defeat against the, Miami Heat, the Orlando Magic return home to Amway Center to take on the Phoenix Suns. The game pits two rebuilding clubs against each other, and the teams ties to one another: general managers Ryan McDonough and Rob Hennigan are good friends, while coaches Jeff Hornacek and Jacque Vaughn played three seasons together with the Utah Jazz in the late 1990s.

Orlando's last time out: The Magic built a 16-point halftime lead against Miami on Saturday, but couldn't contain the defending champions after intermission: LeBron James and Dwyane Wade scored 19 points apiece in the second half, nearly matching the Magic's total output of 44 points between the two of them. Glen Davis led Orlando with 20 points in his first game in nearly a year.

Phoenix's last time out: The Suns ended a four-game losing streak Friday with a 98-91 win road victory against the Charlotte Bobcats. Channing Frye led all scorers with 20 points and five triples, while P.J. Tucker added 17 points.

In 2012/13: The Magic swept the Suns in the first year of their post-Dwight Howard rebuild, with an average victory margin of 14.5 points. Andrew Nicholson shone in the most recent meeting, scoring 19 points in 25 minutes off Orlando's bench as six Magic players scored in double-figures; J.J. Redick led the Magic with 20 points. Amazingly, the only Sun who played in that game and is still on Phoenix's roster is Markieff Morris.
