The Magic big man nimbly avoided a delay-of-game call in Orlando's loss to Boston on Friday.

As a hustle- and energy-providing big man off the Orlando Magic's bench, Kyle O'Quinn is expected to contribute to his team in ways which the stat sheet may not necessarily record: he sets hard screens and boxes out at both ends of the floor, among other unglamorous tasks. And in Friday's loss to the Boston Celtics (game recap, notebook), he made a fun and unusual contribution which, as typifies his role, won't appear in the box score. Thankfully, we have video of the event.

With 1:46 to play in the third quarter and Orlando trailing by seven, Magic forward Maurice Harkless took a feed from Victor Oladipo into Boston's defense, absorbed contact from Brandon Bass, and finished a one-handed jam. He went to the foul line to complete the three-point play. As his free throw dropped through the net, drawing Orlando to within four of the visiting Celtics, O'Quinn reached up and touched it with his left hand.

O'Quinn quickly realized that making contact with the ball after his team scored could result in a delay-of-game penalty, so he withdrew his hand and let the ball drop to the floor, where it bounced between his legs. The Magic big man, not wanting to make any more contact with the ball to risk a delay-of-game whistle, awkwardly adjusted his gait to avoid the ball altogether, as if the outcome of the game hinged upon his ability to evade the sphere.

On his official Twitter account Saturday, O'Quinn retweeted a .gif animation of the play from the Magic site That's So Magic.

On its website, the NBA says the Competition Committee "calibrate[d] the interpretation of the delay-of-game violation" over the summer:

Referees will call a delay-of-game any time a player on the new defensive team after a made basket holds or redirects the ball. When this occurs, his team will be assessed a delay-of-game warning on their first offense or a technical foul following a previous delay warning.

Friday's officiating crew of Tony Brothers, Steven Anderson, and Tre Maddox elected against whistling O'Quinn for a violation under the adjusted rule, which is designed to prevent teams from gaining a tactical advantage by delaying their opponents from inbounding the ball.

The Magic shot poorly and committed too many turnovers on Friday, falling to a scrappy Celtics squad.

The Orlando Magic ended their four-game homestand Friday with a 91-89 loss to the Boston Celtics. Arron Afflalo scored 23 points to lead all players, but he was one of only three Orlando players to reach double-digits. In contrast, six Celtics scored between 10 and 16 points.

Here's a look at the stories that developed in Friday's Magic loss.

Offense stalls

The Magic shot just 39.8 percent for the game and 37.1 percent after the first period, with 16 turnovers. Magic coach Jacque Vaughn credited Boston guard Avery Bradley for disrupting Orlando's offense at the point of attack.

Photo by David Manning, USA Today Sports

"They have a pretty good defender in Avery Bradley who can extend the defense some and pressure the basketball," Vaughn said. "A couple of times he was able to get into us and disrupt us a little bit."

Bradley made a key play with 5:49 to play in the fourth quarter, poking the ball away from Victor Oladipo in the backcourt and taking the ball the other way with one hard dribble for a dunk and-one chance, which he converted. The three-point play extended Boston's lead to four. The Texas product finished with three steals and a blocked shot on the night.

Magic center Nik Vučević didn't think Orlando dealt well with Boston's pressure.

"They were really pressuring us in the second half and we didn't respond really well," Vučević said. "They were really physical with us and that led to turnovers."

For his part, Afflalo said Boston "had a general momentum" in the second half, and that the Magic didn't match its "intensity."

The Celtics scored 25 points off Orlando's miscues, compared to just eight Orlando points off Boston's 11 turnovers.

A frustrating play

Trailing by three and with 10 seconds to play, Orlando had possession with a chance to tie the game. The play they ran out of a timeout nearly worked.

Afflalo inbounded the ball from the left sideline to Vučević, who was posted up at the logo about 18 feet from the basket. Afflalo then ran to the top of the key, only to cut back to the corner across a hard screen from Jason Maxiell, who wiped out Courtney Lee, Afflalo's defender. Vučević pitched the ball back to Afflalo as he cut. Gerald Wallace switched from Maxiell to Afflalo and used a hard closeout to force Afflalo to take an escape dribble to his left, deeper into the corner. Afflalo pulled up just inside the arc, fading to his left as he fired in order to avoid Wallace's second contest. He sank the shot, but it only brought the home team within a point with four seconds to play.

"Good look [and] good execution down the stretch," Vaughn said, adding that the play was for Afflalo all the way. He was pleased with the shot the play produced, but hoped it'd result in a three-point try instead of a two.

Afflalo was harder on himself than Vaughn seemed to be in his press conference.

[E]ven with four seconds on the clock, you have to be able to slow the game down enough to be conscious of where you are on the court.
Arron Afflalo on taking a long two-pointer instead of the triple his team needed

"Not a smart play," Afflalo said. "Obviously, my intent to shoot the initial three coming off [the screen], but even with four seconds on the clock, you have to be able to slow the game down enough to be conscious of where you are on the court. I'm very upset at myself for stepping on the line."

Wallace's contest disrupted Afflalo's rhythm.

"I wanted to shoot the initial shot, and then I thought--once I had him in the air a little bit--I thought about going for some contact," Afflalo said. "I saw a little room in that corner, and obviously, in the corner, it's really tight over there, so I didn't want to step out of bounds."

After Afflalo's long deuce, Bradley split a pair of free throws to put Boston up two points and giving the Magic possession with three seconds to play. But Orlando didn't have any timeouts, as Afflalo said, forcing Oladipo to heave a final shot just inside midcourt as the final horn sounded.

Respect for Nelson

Magic point guard Jameer Nelson has made an impression on Celtics coach Brad Stevens. Speaking before tipoff, the first-year head coach had praise for Orlando's small lead guard.

"To play in this league and be as effective in this league, at the size that he is, tells you, number one, he's really quick and really fast," Stevens said. "Number two is he's got a great mindset and some great stuff about him."

Stevens hopes that Celtics rookie Phil Pressey, listed at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, can one day develop into a player of Nelson's caliber. In 16 minutes off the bench Friday, the Missouri product went 0-of-4 from the floor for one point, two rebounds, an assist, and two turnovers.

Honoring those who serve

Friday, the Magic teamed with their season ticketholders and Harris Corporation to donate more than 2000 tickets to that night's game to military personnel and their families. The program is called Seats for Soldiers, and it's now in its 10th season.

In addition to donating tickets, the Magic honored Sergeant Lito Santos, who earned a Purple Heart for an Army tour he served in Iraq in 2005, in a halftime presentation.

Magic guard E'Twaun Moore and Wallace got into the spirit by wearing special blue sweatbands with red trim: Moore on his right wrist, Wallace on his head. Stuff, the Magic's mascot, wore a camouflage jersey and pants in the first half, and then switched into a Captain America-style jersey after intermission.

Stuff does not typically wear pants.

Orlando committed far too many mistakes, at both ends of the floor, in Friday's loss to Boston.

The Boston Celtics ended the Orlando Magic's winning streak at three games on Friday, upsetting Orlando by a 91-89 final at Amway Center. Orlando committed 20 turnovers, shot just 65.5 percent at the foul line, and generally executed poorly at both ends of the floor. As such, Boston managed to earn the victory despite shooting 35.8 percent from the floor.

Brandon Bass led six Celtics in double-figure scoring, with 16 points. Arron Afflalo had 23 for Orlando, while Nik Vucevic added 14 points and 13 boards. Magic guards Victor Oladipo and Jameer Nelson had rough outings, combining for 21 points on 7-of-27 shooting with 10 assists and 10 turnovers.

The Magic rode Nikola Vučević to an early lead. Orlando's center shot 5-of-6 from the floor in the first period, scoring 12 of Orlando's 24 points. Boston struggled to match his speed in diving to the rim.

The visitors also struggled to put the ball in the basket, connecting on just 25.9 percent of their first-quarter offerings. Most players miss shots short or long, but Boston's errant shots were either too far to the left or the right, a disconcerting development for coach Brad Stevens. The Magic built a seven-point lead after one.

But Boston, a grind-it-out team on most nights, opened the game up in the second period, thriving in fast-break chances. Former Magic guard Courtney Lee changed the game for the Celtics off the bench, pushing the pace and scoring in transition. He shot 4-of-5 for 11 points in nine minutes.

The Magic, meanwhile, went away from what worked in the first quarter: Vučević's lone second-period shot attempt was a 13-footer in heavy traffic. Gone were the easy pick-and-roll and tip-in chances that availed themselves to him in the opening frame. Without Vučević to carry the load, and with Boston's length on the perimeter discouraging dribble penetration, the Magic reverted to 2012/13 form in the second period. They recorded nearly as many turnovers (six) as baskets (eight) and in genearl allowed Boston to dictate the terms of the game.

Orlando ended both quarters of the first half with defensive lapses that can prove devastating in close games. Rookie big man Kelly Olynyk took an inbounds pass with 4.4 seconds remaining in the first quarter and went three-quarters of the court to score an uncontested layup. At the end of the second, Jordan Crawford rebounded a Maurice Harkless miss and took the ball the length of the floor completely untouched... until Arron Afflalo hacked him across the arm, giving the veteran scoring guard a three-point conversion chance. The five points Orlando yielded as a result of sloppy, end-of-quarter defense could prove costly. The home team held a three-point edge at halftime, but it could have been eight.

Boston continued to impose its will on the game in the third quarter, and it did so inside the painted area with impressive passing from its post players: Jared Sullinger, Gerald Wallace, Brandon Bass, and Vítor Faverani combined for 14 points and five assists in the third quarter as Boston built itself a three-point advantage. Meanwhile, Orlando shot just 35 percent from the floor.

The Magic crept closer in the fourth period, with a Jason Maxiell jump hook bringing the hosts to within a point at the 6:13 mark. He did not convert the three-point play, but Orlando had possession after Crawford lost the ball out of bounds. The Magic called for time to set up a play, but Victor Oladipo lost the handle and Avery Bradley came up with a steal, dunking on the Magic rookie at the other end and converting a three-point play to put Boston up four points at the 5:48 mark.

Afflalo converted a four-point play--the first of Orlando's season--with 1:38 to go to trim Boston's lead to just two points. Olynyk answered with a 12-footer off a great pick-and-op set with Crawford. Jameer Nelson created a great three-point look for Harkless on Orlando's next possession, but his offering from the left corner was just long.

Afflalo sank another key basket with 26.5 to play, driving to his left around Bass and converting the layup and-one to bring his team to within a point. He and Vučević played a two-man game that briefly went awry when Vučević hit Afflalo with a pass while Afflalo was on his backside, having slipped, but the pair improvised to create a scoring chance anyway.

Forced to foul, the Magic hacked Bass with 10.5 seconds to play after trying desperately to get a steal or force a travel. Bass sank both foul shots, setting up Orlando's penultimate possession. Afflalo sprung free in the left corner off a Vučević screen, but he pulled up with both feet inside the arc. He sank the shot over a great contest by Wallace.

Bradley shot 1-of-2 from the foul line on Boston's final trip, putting the Celtics up two with 3.5 seconds to go. Orlando, with no timeouts, was forced to heave and hope for good fortune. Oladipo's attempt from just inside midcourt was wide and to the left.

The Orlando Magic enter Friday's game against the Boston Celtics with a surprisingly strong defense: according to NBA.com/stats, Orlando's defense allows just 94.8 points per 100 possessions and 34.8 paint points per game. Both of those figures are third-best in the league.

How has Orlando succeeded on defense? Celtics coach Brad Stevens offered an explanation before tipoff.

"They leave those guys down there [in the paint], for the most part, and they really pressure you with their guards," he said. The way to counter that defensive style is to "stretch 'em with your bigs," according to Stevens.

"I think your bigs have to make shots to beat 'em," Stevens said.

Boston has at least one big man who can shoot, and he's familiar to Orlando fans: Brandon Bass, who spent two seasons with the Magic, has developed into an elite mid-range shooter at power forward, and he's converted 52.2 percent of his shots from that range through five games of the 2013/14 season.

Friday's game tips off at 7 PM Eastern. Orlando Pinstriped Post will offer full coverage in this StoryStream.

The Magic aim for a perfect 4-0 homestand Friday when they host the Celtics.

The Orlando Magic wrap a four-game homestand Friday against the Boston Celtics, another rebuilding squad.

Tipoff between Orlando and Boston is set for 7 PM Eastern on Fox Sports Florida and ESPN 580 AM in Orlando. The Orlando Pinstriped Post GameThread will appear at 5 PM in this StoryStream and on the cover.

Orlando's last time out: The Magic squandered a 19-point lead against the visiting Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, but still came away with the upset 98-90 victory thanks to Nik Vucevic's 30-point, 21-rebound effort. Arron Afflalo hit the go-ahead basket with 1:47 to play, and then Vucevic sank a two-point jumper to ice the game for Orlando.

Boston's last time out: The Celtics picked up the first win of the Brad Stevens era Wednesday against the Utah Jazz, 97-87, behind 20 points from Brandon Bass and 18 more from Jeff Green. Three-point shooting swung the game, as Boston sank seven triples to Utah's one.

In 2012/13: A much different Celtics team swept the Magic, 3-0, in the most recent campaign, winning each game by an average of 17 points. Former Magic guard Courtney Lee tallied 20 points to lead six Celtics in double-figure scoring on April 13th, a 32-point Boston win in which Orlando shot just 42.2 percent from the floor.
