Orlando played solidly defensively, but couldn't muster enough baskets to keep its game against the Celtics on Friday competitive.

The Orlando Magic's losing streak continued Friday night against the Boston Celtics as Beantown shot 50 percent en route to winning by a 97-84 final. Jeff Green scored 17 points in 29 minutes off the Celtics' bench, while five other players reached double-digits as well. The Magic shot only 37.9 percent from the field and played much of the game without starting point guard Jameer Nelson, who left in the second quarter and did not return.

Despite the defeat, Orlando can point toward its defensive performance as a reason for optimism. Boston is one of the league's worst offensive teams and did shoot a high percentage, but it did very little else right offensively in the win. The Celtics' 102.8 offensive rating is the worst for an Orlando opponent in a Magic loss since December 12th, when the Atlanta Hawks managed only 95.8 points per 100 possessions and managed to win anyway.

If Orlando itself had played competently at the offensive end, it could have snapped its losing streak rather than continuing it. But without Arron Afflalo, Glen Davis, or Nelson, the Magic had few go-to scorers, and Boston's defense remains one of the league's finest anyway.

Orlando, missing Glen Davis and Arron Afflalo due to injury, lost starting point guard Jameer Nelson in the second half due to a left forearm contusion as Boston broke the game open early in the fourth quarter for the win.

Jeff Green scored 17 points off the bench and Paul Pierce contributed a near triple-double of 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists on Friday night as the Boston Celtics defeated the Orlando Magic, 97-84. Kevin Garnett added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Celtics.

It looked like the Magic would make a game out of it in the third quarter, after trailing by 11 at the half. Orlando pulled within 57-54 after an E'Twaun Moore 3-point play with just over five minutes remaining. The Celtics proceeded to go on a 29-9 run to go up 86-63 to put the game away.

Boston, without All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo, moved the ball really well the entire game, finishing with 30 assists. They shot 50% for the game, and shot at least 50% in every quarter except the first.

Orlando struggled considerably in the first half, shooting a poor 32.6% from the field, including 1 for 13 on 3s, as they trailed 46-35 at halftime. Center Nikola Vucevic and power forward Andrew Nicholson, starting in place of the injured Davis, combined to score 19 points on 9 of 15 shooting in that first half, while the rest of the Magic combined to shoot 6 of 31 (19.4%) for 16 points. The Magic finished the game shooting 38%, including 3 of 19 on 3s.

The Magic made a nice run late in the fourth quarter with their young players to come as close as 94-84 in the final minute. Rookie center Kyle O'Quinn was particularly impressive, scoring all 11 of his points in the final 5 1/2 minutes of the game.

J.J. Redick led the Magic in scoring with 15 points. Nicholson took advantage of some much-needed playing time and finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also added two blocks. Vucevic also added a double-double of 14 points and 14 boards. Moore, who took over for Nelson in the second half, scored 14 points along with 4 assists. Maurice Harkless, starting in place of Afflalo, scored 8 points along with 8 rebounds in 30 minutes of play.

One has to wonder if Hedo Turkoglu's hand is still bothering him, as he went scoreless in 18 minutes off the bench, shooting 0 for 6.

Orlando is now winless in 13 games against teams from the Atlantic Division this season, and has lost 19 of their last 21 games, in addition to their eight game losing streak.

Orlando enters Friday's matchup with Boston having lost seven straight games.

The Orlando Magic visit the Boston Celtics on Friday looking to end a seven-game losing skid. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM Eastern on Fox Sports Florida in the Orlando market. The Orlando Pinstriped Post GameThread will appear at 5:30 PM in this StoryStream and on the cover.

Orlando's last time out: Starting guards Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick combined for 50 points, but they got precious little help from their teammates as the New York Knicks toppled the Magic, 113-97, in a game that didn't feature much defense. Tyson Chandler scored 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting to lead six Knicks in double-figure scoring. New York drained seven three-pointers in the fourth period to put some distance between itself and the visitors, who entered the fourth trailing by only six points.

Boston's last time out: The Celtics topped the visiting Sacramento Kings, 99-81, on Wednesday behind a dominant second quarter. Boston outscored the Kings by a 37-14 margin in the second, which lopsidedness allowed the Celtics to prevail easily despite losing each of the other three quarters. The Celtics shot 16-of-20 from the field in the second and committed only three turnovers. Overall, Paul Pierce led Boston with 16 points.

The last meeting: Boston held off a second-half Magic rally to win in overtime, 116-110. The Magic trailed by 10 points at halftime but fought their way back, taking a two-point lead with 1:34 to go on a Glen Davis layup. Kevin Garnett answered with a tying jumper to knot the score at 102, and neither team scored for the rest of regulation. Minutes later, Pierce hit a go-ahead three-pointer which gave the visiting Celtics the lead for good.
