Curiously, the veteran swingman took just four shots in 42 minutes as Detroit crushed Orlando on Tuesday.

The Orlando Magic's crushing defeat against the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday was one of the stranger games of their season. Orlando had soundly beaten the Pistons twice before Tuesday's game, but that night, they looked lost and thoroughly unmotivated.

Of particular note was Arron Afflalo's performance. The team's leading scorer on the season, Afflalo went scoreless in 42 minutes, took just four shots, and didn't attempt his first shot until late in the third quarter. Afflalo is ordinarily a fiery competitor, one who takes losing hard and who has made clear the Magic's goal is to make the playoffs. So why was he so passive against the Pistons, one of his former teams?

The only explanation Afflalo offered: "It was just a tough night." There has to be more to the story than that. Orlando has lost 14 of its last 16 games and, at 14-27, has nearly two losses for each of its wins. The season's been full of tough nights. What in particular made Tuesday so difficult for Orlando's leading scorer?

Brian Schmitz's theory is that Afflalo was "pouting" or making "a protest" of some kind. Perhaps he was displeased with coach Jacque Vaughn's decision to move him to small forward so he could slot J.J. Redick at shooting guard in the starting five.

Whatever the reason for Afflalo's poor performance on Tuesday, Orlando cannot return to its winning ways if he isn't attacking opposing defenses and looking for his own shot.

Detroit cruised to a 15-point win against Orlando on Tuesday.

The Orlando Magic hung tough against the Detroit Pistons for a half, but fell apart after halftime to lose, 105-90, for their 14th defeat in their last 16 games. J.J. Redick's 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting weren't enough to lift the Magic, which allowed 46.2 percent shooting as Detroit had six players score in double-figures.

The four-factors data make plain the reasons for Orlando's defeat, and they aren't surprises: the Magic didn't force many turnovers--the Pistons committedjust eight in an estimated 92 possessions--nor did they draw many fouls. The Magic shot 6-of-8 from the foul line, with Redick and Glen Davis the only two players to attempt a free throw. Detroit, in contrast, went 14-of-21 at the stripe.

One surprise for Orlando: it failed on the defensive glass.
Orlando crumbled after halftime to lose for the 14th time in its last 16 games.

The Orlando Magic remained competitive with the Detroit Pistons in Tuesday's game for a half, but ultimately fell by a 105-90 final for their 14th loss in their last 16 games. J.J. Redick, in his fifth start of the season and his first since November 19th, scored a game-high 26 points on 9-of-10 shooting, but his efficient play was Orlando's lone bright spot as the hot Pistons--Tuesday's win was their ninth in their last 13--picked it apart after halftime.

Detroit took control of the game in the third quarter, during which it doubled-up the Magic, 28-14. Orlando, which shot 51.2 percent in the fist half, went just 7-of-17 in the third quarter with no free-throw attempts. Gustavo Ayón accounted for three of Orlando's baskets with easy layups right at the rim, but it's a sad comment on the state of the Magic that if Ayón wasn't getting open inside, they didn't have many good looks.

At the other end, Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond took command, scoring 16 of the Pistons' 28 in the quarter on a combined 8-of-11 shooting.

An 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter put Orlando in an 87-66 hole and effectively sealed the win for Detroit. Magic coach Jacque Vaughn toyed with his lineup in order to engineer a comeback attempt, surrounding center Nik Vučević and later Glen Davis with two point guards and two swingmen, but that gambit failed. Vaughn also tried Josh McRoberts at center in that alignment. He would ultimately empty his bench with 4:06 to go and his team trailing by 18 points.

Moving Redick to the starting lineup paid dividends initially, thanks in large part to Redick himself: the Duke product shot 4-of-4 in the first quarter to help Orlando build an 11-point lead. But when he headed to the bench with 3:22 remaining in the period, Detroit went on a 15-3 run to take a one-point lead. In that span, Orlando shot 1-of-7 from the floor. Without Redick to key it, the second unit struggled to create shots, and the Magic turned to Davis to generate offense. He did not answer that call effectively, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-16 shooting.

Redick's move to the starting lineup and subsequent hot shooting had a strange effect on Arron Afflalo, the Magic's leading scorer on the season. He did not attempt a shot in the first half, instead working as a facilitator. Even with the shot-clock winding down, Afflalo first looked to set up his teammates for spot-up opportunities. Though his unselfishness is commendable to a degree, Afflalo's primary responsibility on this team is to score. He didn't attempt his first basket until the 2:33 mark of the third quarter, when he missed a pullup 17-footer off the bounce. In 42 minutes, Afflalo went scoreless on three shot attempts, but he did contribute nine rebounds and five assists with no turnovers.

The Pistons led by two at halftime despite shooting just 40.4 percent from the floor. The reason for their success: foul shooting. Detroit attempted 14 free throws before intermission, sinking 11. Jason Maxiell and Monroe combined to shoot 9-of-11 from the stripe. The pair picked on Andrew Nicholson in particular, as the rookie picked up four fouls in 11 first-half minutes; Monroe and Maxiell drew three of those four fouls.

When the Magic visit the Pistons on Tuesday, Redick will make his fifth start of the year. He replaces Jones, who had started Orlando's last 10 games.

Orlando Magic coach Jacque Vaughn has shuffled his starting lineup yet again. The team's official public-relations Twitter account announced before Tuesday's tipoff between the Magic and the Detroit Pistons that J.J. Redick will start alongside Jameer Nelson, Arron Afflalo, Glen Davis, and Nikola Vucevic, a group which is 1-1 starting together in 2012/13. Redick's start slides Afflalo to small forward and moves DeQuan Jones to the bench.

The start will be Redick's fifth of the season. In his four previous starts, he's averaged 13.3 points and 5.5 rebounds, shooting 40 percent from the field and 25.5 percent from three-point range. Coincidentally, one of his prior starts also came in a road game against the Pistons, one in which Orlando prevailed.

Jones, an undrafted rookie from Miami, had started the Magic's last 10 games, replacing Maurice Harkless. In those 10 starts, Jones was often tasked with defending the opposition's top perimeter scoring option, and he contributed 5.5 points and 2.9 rebounds on 53.2 percent shooting from the floor.
