Orlando rallied past L.A. in the fourth quarter to earn a huge victory.

The Orlando Magic blitzed the Los Angeles Lakers in the fourth quarter on Sunday, outscoring them by a 40-26 margin to take a 113-103 victory. The Magic got a season-high 30 points from Arron Afflalo, as well as double-doubles from Glen Davis (23 points, 12 rebounds), Nikola Vučević (17 points, 12 boards), and Jameer Nelson (19 points, 13 assists).

Three-point shooting saved the game for Orlando, a rare occurrence under new coach Jacque Vaughn, under whom the team has taken far fewer three-pointers than it did under Stan Van Gundy. The Magic were a respectable 8-of-23 overall for 34.8 percent, but shot 4-of-7 from deep in the fourth quarter to seal victory. Nelson hit two of those triples just 50 seconds apart to turn a six-point lead into an 11-point advantage; Dwight Howard split a pair of free throws between them.

Both teams got to the foul line at solid rates, though L.A. did so because the Magic wanted it to, intentionally fouling Howard late in the game for strategic reasons and hacking him whenever he caught the ball in deep post position. Neither team fared well on the offensive boards, and both teams took great care of the ball.

The difference, then, was shooting: Orlando shot 55.5 percent on two-point baskets compared to 43.5 percent for the Lakers. And though the Lakers boast, in Howard and Pau Gasol, two All-Star big men, Orlando dominated the painted area. The Lakers narrowly outscored the Magic there, 42-40, but the Magic shot 20-of-35 (57.1 percent) in the lane. Los Angeles went 21-of-52 (40.4 percent), ending whatever chance it had of prevailing.

Overall, the Lakers simply did not score efficiently enough to surmount the challenges an on-fire Magic team presented. Kobe Bryant exemplifies the host team's struggles: though he mustered a game-high 34 points, he needed 27 shot attempts and 11 free-throw attempts to get there.

How seriously is Orlando taking its win against Dwight Howard and the Lakers on Sunday? The Magic are saying it's Spirit Day in Orlando.

The Orlando Magic's emphatic defeat of the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night--they scored 40 points in the fourth to defeat Dwight Howard and company, 113-103--counts for just one win in the standings, but the team and its fans aren't treating it like that. Having endured the so-called Dwightmare for one season and over the summer as Howard wavered in his commitment to Orlando, Sunday's win felt like something more. And the team recognizes as much. On Monday morning, the Magic proclaimed it "Spirit Day" in Orlando:

I suppose one could remain skeptical about this approach to the victory. "Act like you've been there before," they might say. But Orlando hasn't been there before: it's their first win against Howard since he left the Magic, and Sunday's result galvanized the team and its fans.

The veteran shooting guard took to Twitter to react to Orlando's big win against L.A.

Orlando Magic fans are reacting to their team's emphatic win against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night as though they won the NBA Finals instead of an early December road game, and they have a reason to: after what Dwight Howard subjected the Magic and their fans to in his last year in pinstripes, the fans have every right to exult after upsetting Howard and his new team.

It seems like Magic guard J.J. Redick, who played alongside Howard from 2006-2012, might agree. Following the win, Redick posted the following message to his Twitter account:

"That's for Orlando" says it all. Redick and Orlando's veterans seemed to have a little extra in store for Howard and the Lakers on Sunday.

Howard tallied 21 points and 15 rebounds in L.A.'s defeat, but missed 12 of his 21 foul shots, including seven of his 14 attempts in the final quarter as the Magic pulled away. Redick went 6-of-15 from the floor for 14 points off Orlando's bench, also contributing seven assists.

Orlando stunned the Lakers on Sunday night behind a 40-point outburst in the fourth quarter.

The Orlando Magic offed the Los Angeles Lakers, 113-103, on Sunday night in stunning and stirring fashion at STAPLES Center behind a fourth-quarter rally which featured three dunks by Nikola Vučević, four Magic three-point baskets, and seven missed free throws by Dwight Howard. Indeed, Orlando upset its former franchise center in emphatic fashion, and could not ask for a better way to start their six-game roadtrip.

The Lakers opened the fourth quarter with a four-point advantage and managed to extend their lead to six points when Kobe Bryant and Howard returned at the 7:08 mark of the period, but the Magic responded quickly to regain the lead. Arron Afflalo, who scored a season-high 30 points, drilled a three-pointer from the left corner--his second such triple of the game--and Glen Davis followed a Howard miss with a long two in delayed transition. After a pair of missed Howard free throws, the Magic ran J.J. Redick off a pin-down. Redick drove the lane and drew Howard away from Vučević, and then dished to Vučević for a dunk and-one.

The Magic continued their impressive climb back despite Bryant and Howard sharing the floor. Davis hit another rhythm jumper, which Redick followed with a three-pointer off a Jameer Nelson assist. Nelson hit two three-pointers sandwiching another Redick-to-Vučević dunk connection. The latter of Nelson's threes put the Magic up 11 points at the 2:30 mark. In less than five minutes of game time, Orlando had taken command of the game and silenced the STAPLES crowd.

And Orlando did not relent, maintaining its intensity and aggression at the offensive end and on loose balls. Defensively, there wasn't much to its strategy: foul Howard away from the ball and force the six-time All-Star to make free throws. He didn't. Howard finished the game 9-of-21 from the foul line and 7-of-14 in the fourth.

Orlando's core players came up big: Afflalo's 30 points keyed the offense, while Nelson scored 19 points and dished 13 assists. J.J. Redick shot just 6-of-15 from the floor, but tallied 14 points and seven assists to offset his poor shooting. Davis scored an efficient 23 points (8-of-15 from the field, 7-of-8 from the line) and hauled in 12 boards. Vučević scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds as well, blocking four shots for good measure.

For the second straight game, the Magic played competitively in the first half against stiff competition. Orlando hung tough against Los Angeles, battling the host team to a 52-all tie in the opening 24 minutes. Afflalo, a UCLA product, scored 14 points in the first half, looking more energetic than ever in pinstripes. Perhaps renewing his rivalry with Bryant contributed to his activity level: though Bryant went off for 17 first-half points of his own, Afflalo held his own better than one might have expected.

Curiously, the Lakers did not involve Howard in many pick-and-rolls in the first half. Bryant elected to call his own number quite often in those sets, despite the fact that Vučević's weak defense in the pick-and-roll. When the Lakers did go to Howard against Vučević, they saw great results, as when Howard backed Vučević down and muscled in a dunk late in the third quarter. Moments later, Bryant hooked up with Howard on a backdoor alley-oop. On both occasions, Vučević could do nothing more than hold his arms straight up in the air.

Metta World Peace helped L.A. pull away in the third quarter by sinking three three-pointers, all from the high left wing. The second of those triples marked the 1000th of World Peace's career, making him the 68th player to reach that plateau.

The Magic opened the final quarter in a four-point hole, but had an opportunity to claw out of it as Bryant and Howard rested. Orlando exploited Howard's absence, as well as the presence of veteran forward Antawn Jamison, by attacking the lane early in the fourth. Davis beat him badly with a right-handed drive from a triple-threat position. On the next play, Nelson got by Chris Duhon and Jamison easily with a Davis screen, freeing himself to make an easy pass to Kyle O'Quinn for a dunk.

It bears noting that O'Quinn appears to have taken the backup center job from Gustavo Ayón, who recorded his first Did Not Play-Coach's Decision of the season on Sunday. O'Quinn, a rookie from Norfolk State, played physically in his limited minutes, and produced six points, two rebounds, and two blocks in his seven minutes. On one fourth quarter sequence, he bumped All-Star forward Pau Gasol under the rim as Gasol attempted to shoot, prompting a miss. Gasol grabbed the rebound, but O'Quinn bothered his putback attempt just enough for that offering to miss as well.

The Magic embark on a six-game roadtrip beginning Sunday night against the Lakers and Dwight Howard.

Orlando Magic. Los Angeles Lakers. Tipoff is set for 9:30 PM Eastern on Fox Sports Florida in the Orlando market. The Orlando Pinstriped Post GameThread will appear at 7:30 PM in this StoryStream and on the cover.

Orlando has dropped each of its last three games and 10 of its last 13 overall, falling to 5-15 on the year. A major reason for its struggles is its lack of reliable outside shooting. In the Magic's last two losses, they've made three three-pointers in 26 attempts, a conversion rate of 11.5 percent. Lakers center Dwight Howard made as many threes in his last game as the Magic did.

The Lakers have won six of their last 10 games to improve to 8-8. Howard, the former Magic center, is averaging 18.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 2.8 blocked shots while shooting 60.9 percent from the field.
