Turnovers once again doomed Orlando as it fell to 3-7 in Atlanta.

The Orlando Magic fell to 3-7 on the season with Monday's loss to the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena, their seventh consecutive defeat at Atlanta, and the game was an ugly one for both sides, as the four-factors data show:

Neither team lived up to its 2011/12 performance in any of the four factors, and the offensive performance was the Magic's worst of the season; though they scored fewer points (68) in an earlier loss to the Brooklyn Nets, that game had significantly fewer possessions. When adjusted for pace, Orlando has never been more inept under coach Jacque Vaughn than it was Monday.

The Magic turned the ball over on nearly 20 percent of their possessions. Teams of Orlando's caliber--which is to say, teams severely lacking in talent--have a low margin for error, and cannot remain competitive unless they're executing their offenses with precision. Given the Magic's carelessness, it's no wonder they stand at 3-7, and that the only thing keeping them out of the Southeast Division's cellar is the ineptitude of the winless Washington Wizards.

The Hawks blew open what had been a close game and led by 24 in the fourth period. The loss is Orlando's second in as many days.

The Orlando Magic fixed their first-quarter futility problem in Monday's game against the Atlanta Hawks, shooting 50 percent and scoring 23 points in the opening 12 minutes. That's the only thing Orlando fixed on Monday, however, as the Hawks cruised to a 81-72 victory. The final score might give the impression that the game was close, but rest assured, it wasn't: Atlanta led by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter before Orlando made a rally that was both too little and too late.

The Hawks made their hay in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Magic, 44-26, and limiting Orlando to 28.6 percent shooting.

No one Hawk took control of the game, but rather a total team effort carried the host Hawks to victory. Al Horford led the team with 15 points and nine boards, but five other Hawks scored at least eight points.

Turnovers once again tell the story for Orlando, which scored fewer than 80 points for the fourth time on the season: Atlanta turned the Magic's 24 miscues into 24 points. E'Twaun Moore committed seven--although, in fairness to him, two of those came when he stepped on the endline while trying to corral loose balls--and two other players committed three apiece.

Playing through illness, Orlando's starting backcourt of J.J. Redick and Jameer Nelson proved ineffective. The pair combined for 10 points on 4-of-15 shooting. Glen Davis was the only Magic player to score in double figures: he scored 11, but missed eight of his 13 shot attempts.

Orlando's speedy, young second unit made a bit of a comeback to force Hawks coach Larry Drew to call upon his starters late in the game.

The veterans were almost unable to play Monday night due to illness, but felt well enough to take the court.

Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick will be in the Orlando Magic's starting five Monday night against the Atlanta Hawks even though both veterans are battling illness, reports John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com.

Redick felt too ill to play in Sunday's loss to the Toronto Raptors and his status for Monday's contest was in question until just before tipoff. "I’m feeling better, but I have a ways to go to recover," Redick told Denton after Monday's shootaround. Against Toronto, undrafted rookie DeQuan Jones started in Redick's place and contributed seven points and five rebounds.

Nelson, who has already missed six games this season, also felt sick in the hours leading up to Monday's tipoff. Now in his ninth season, the St. Joseph's product is averaging 10 points and a career-best 8.7 assists per game, but is shooting a ghastly 27.3 percent from the floor.

Arron Afflalo, Glen Davis, and Nikola Vučević round out Orlando's starting lineup.

The Magic visit the Highlight Factory to take on Josh Smith and his Hawks.

The Orlando Magic conclude their first roadtrip of the 2012/13 season Monday when they visit the Atlanta Hawks. Tipoff is set for 7:30 PM on Fox Sports Florida in the Orlando market and on NBA TV nationally. The Orlando Pinstriped Post GameThread will go live at 5:30 PM in this StoryStream and on the cover.

Orlando has gone 1-1 on the roadtrip to date, with a come-from-behind win against the Detroit Pistons and a disheartening loss to the Toronto Raptors already in the books.

The Hawks, who are rebuilding on the fly after trading Joe Johnson and the nearly $90 million remaining on his contract, stand at 4-4 thanks to solid all-around play from Josh Smith and Al Horford. Free-agent signee Louis Williams is averaging 14.1 points in just 23.6 minutes. Atlanta went 2-2 on its recent road trip, most recently trouncing the Sacramento Kings by 16 points.

The Magic have not beaten the Hawks in Atlanta since eliminating them from Eastern Conference Semifinals on May 10th, 2010. Their last regular-season victory in Atlanta was on Thanksgiving Day, 2009.
