Magic rookie DeQuan Jones started ahead of J.J. Redick against the Cavs on Monday night, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

Orlando Magic coach Jacque Vaughn helped rookie swingman DeQuan Jones fulfill a lifelong dream Monday night when he put Jones in the starting lineup for Orlando's 114-111 exhibition loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Cincinnati. Jones, who went undrafted out of Miami, took to Twitter to say "it's only the beginning" for him:

Turned my dream into a reality tonight. My first start in the NBA. It's only the beginning.
— Dequan Jones (@DequanJones5) October 16, 2012

In his first start, Jones led the Magic in minutes (34) and tied for the team lead in rebounds (nine). "It was tremendous," Jones said of the opportunity, according to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel. He earned praise from Vaughn and team leader Jameer Nelson and now stands a decent chance of making the team's opening-day roster. "He's an energy guy," Nelson said of Jones, according to Robbins. "Rebounding, athleticism, slashing--he does a lot. He's a guy who knows his role and plays well."

Jones got the nod at shooting guard ahead of the veteran J.J. Redick because Vaughn wanted "to see if Jones can guard first-tier NBA players," according to Robbins, such as Cavs rookie guard Dion Waiters and veteran swingman C.J. Miles. On the first night of a back-to-back, Vaughn also wanted to keep Redick fresh for Tuesday's game against the Detroit Pistons.

Jones is among three players in Magic camp with non-guaranteed contracts, joining Armon Johnson and Chris Johnson. The Magic have until the start of the regular season to cut five players to bring their roster to the league-maximum of 15, and Jones' performance so far in the preseason isn't making general manager Rob Hennigan's task any easier.

Jones is averaging 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds on 47.4 percent shooting. In his four seasons at Miami (FL), his per-game averages were 4.6 points and 2.4 rebounds. Meanwhile, for the Magic's squad in the Orlando Pro Summer League, Jones posted six points and 4.5 boards. On a per-minute basis, Andrew Nicholson, Kyle O'Quinn, and Magnum Rolle were the only Magic players to rebound better than Jones did.

Orlando played its best offensive game of the preseason so far, shooting the ball and passing the ball well, but ran out of gas in the overtime to fall to 0-3.

Orlando had a chance to win the game in regulation, holding a 107-104 lead with 7.9 seconds remaining, but Cleveland's Jeremy Pargo made a driving layup and was fouled by Magic rookie Andrew Nicholson with 4 seconds remaining. Pargo completed the 3-point play to tie the game at 107. Glen Davis then missed a long jumper for the Magic as time ran out.

Magic power forward Davis led the Magic with 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals, shooting 9 of 17 from the field and 9 of 13 from the free throw line. Shooting guard J.J. Redick came off the bench to score 18 points on just nine shot attempts, and nailed 4 of 5 from 3-point range. Redick also led the team with 8 assists, and added a rare blocked shot. Rookie first-round pick Nicholson came off the bench to score 14 points, and added 9 rebounds with 2 blocks. Point guard E'Twaun Moore rebounded from a bad game, coming off the bench to score 15 points along with 7 assists. Center Nikola Vucevic scored 8 points in the first six minutes of the game, and led the Magic with 10 first-half points.

Orlando coach Jacque Vaughn tightened up his rotation in this game, with ten players seeing action in regulation, and five players playing at least 30 or more minutes. Vaughn made a curious decision to play recently signed wing Chris Johnson in the overtime period, even though Johnson had not played at all in regulation, and did not score. Vaughn started DeQuan Jones at shooting guard, and Jones responded with 7 points and 9 rebounds.

Last season's rookie of the year, Cleveland point guard Kyrie Irving, scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half, as the Cavaliers led by as many as 12 points on their way to a 53-46 lead at the half. Irving was outstanding, shooting 5 of 8 from the field and 11 of 11 at the free throw line, and added 3 assists and 2 steals for the game.

The Magic caught fire in the third quarter, shooting 12 of 21 from the field while outscoring the Cavs 32-31 to trail 84-78 entering the final quarter. Nicholson scored eight points in the third. Davis carried the Magic in the fourth, scoring 13 of the Magic's 29 points to help the Magic take the lead. Redick scored 8 points on two 3s and a jumper in 2 1/2 minutes early in the fourth to help the Magic in their comeback effort.

The Magic shot 23 of 39 (59%) in the third and fourth quarters, and outscored Cleveland 61-54 in the second half to send the game into overtime. Orlando also did a nice job distributing the ball, as they had 33 assists to 15 turnovers for the game. Unfortunately, they could not continue their good shooting in the extra session, making just 2 of 9 from the field, as second year forward Justin Harper scored all four Magic points in the overtime.

Orlando will try to get its first preseason win Tuesday night in Detroit.

Orlando's exhibition schedule continues Monday as the Magic visit Cincinnati's U.S. Bank Arena to take on the Cavaliers at 7 Eastern. The game will not be televised.

The Orlando Magic are in Cincinnati on Monday hoping to deal the Cleveland Cavaliers a defeat and to pick up their first win of the exhibition season.

Cleveland lost its last game on Saturday, 99-95, despite 18 points from second-year big man Tristan Thompson. Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters shot a combined 5-of-22 for 13 points, undermining otherwise solid performances from the Cavs' non-stars. Four players scored in double-figures for the Washington Wizards in their win.

Orlando fell to the Philadelphia 76ers in its last outing.

Orlando travels to Cincinnati to take on Kyrie Irving and his Cavs in a neutral-site exhibition.

The Orlando Magic's preseason continues Monday evening in Cincinnati, where they'll take on the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7 PM. Orlando is still not in the win column this exhibition campaign, having lost both of its prior games, but can reverse that trend in a hurry: after Monday's game, they'll travel north for a Tuesday showdown against the Detroit Pistons.

Yes, it's a preseason back-to-back for Orlando.

Monday, the Magic must contend with Kyrie Irving, the reigning Rookie of the Year. The game will be a homecoming of sorts for Magic scout Anthony Parker, who played the final three years of his career with Cleveland before retiring to join Orlando's basketball operations department.

According to Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel, Magic swingmen Christian Eyenga and Arron Afflalo will miss Monday's game as they recover from strained hamstrings. Afflalo, arguably Orlando's best player, has yet to play in pinstripes due to the injury.
