Some teams build through the draft, and some through trades. After years of trying the old fashioned way, the Orlando Magic took at shot at trading the pick.

The Orlando Magic’s acquisition of Serge Ibaka on Thursday was a long-anticipated first step into reshaping the Magic’s future. After years in the NBAs backwaters, GM Rob Hennigan finally showed a bit of his hand. The first domino in Orlando’s path to future success, or sustained failure, has fallen.

In addition, the Magic added the unpolished, but well-rounded big man Stephen Zimmerman out of UNLV.

With so much size already on the roster, how will these deals pan out? Let’s take a look.

The Trade

In: Serge Ibaka

Out: Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and Domantas Sabonis (the 11th pick)

In school, a B was the worst good grade you can get. You would’ve really loved an A, but let’s be honest, you didn’t study and it could’ve gone much worse.

Could it have been better? Absolutely. The Kings could’ve called and offered Demarcus Cousins for Vucevic and two first-rounders. Jimmy Butler could’ve recently attended a timeshare presentation that strongly convinced him to come live in Orlando. But none of that happened, and GM Rob Hennigan did the best he could with the assets available.

The Magic are in a unique position as a team trying to build a winner: their mid-level guys have already been moved. Tobias Harris and Channing Frye are gone, and Mario Hezonja and Aaron Gordon are untouchable. This means Nikola Vucevic and Victor Oladipo were really the only movable assets coming into Thursday’s draft.

The needs on the roster were clear: rim protection, veteran leadership, and outside shooting. Serge Ibaka meets two of these needs perfectly, and so Hennigan pounced. When he pulled the trigger on that trade, Hennigan took the Magic two steps closer toward the future of the NBA. The league is quickly evolving around sharpshooting guards, and athletic, rim-protecting big men.

Statistically Ibaka’s best year came in 2013, when he averaged 15.1 points, 2.7 blocks, and 8.8 rebounds a game. He did all of this on a stellar 54 percent from two-point range and 38 percent from beyond the arc. If this player is the one that steps off the plane in Orlando, Hennigan’s investments will more than pay off.

In Ibaka, the Magic found the best player that has worn pinstripes since 2012, as well as the best defender. He isn’t a star, but he is a very valuable asset to build around: a high impact player that doesn’t need the ball in his hands to make a difference. This quality is especially attractive to free agents in a way that a player like Oladipo was not. Scorers need touches, and they love big men that erase their mistakes.

All that being said, Ibaka is far from perfect. Is he an All-Star? Probably not. Can he return to the Defensive Player of the Year level form? Maybe. His offensive game has gotten worse in each of the last two years, as the OKC staff have provided him with yards of rope to hang himself with. He is not a high volume three-point shooter, and Frank Vogel will need to rein him in if he hopes to have success.

The scariest part of this deal is that in OKC, Ibaka had two top-five players to alleviate the pressure. Here in Orlando, the team may need him to score depending what free agency will bring.

For such a potential gain, the loss was not much of a gamble. Just as the emergence of Steven Adams and Enes Kanter made Ibaka expendable, the emergence of Evan Fournier, as well as the promise of Mario Hezonja on the wings meant that Oladipo wasn’t worth keeping around at his value.

In the modern NBA, shooting is a premium. In Orlando, Oladipo never developed into either a consistent outside shooter or a physical finisher at the rim. The athletic shooting guard shot a pedestrian 54 percent inside of five feet, and 34 percent from beyond the arc. With one year left on his contract, and a Wild West of a free agency on the horizon in terms of player salaries, it was unlikely that the Magic would offer him a long-term contract in the future anyway.

If Elfrid Payton is truly the starting point guard of the future, as is evident by the amount of leash and team shaping that the Magic have already given him, Oladipo had to go. A point guard with an undeveloped shot can only work when paired with a deadly shooting two guard to compensate. Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen were a great example of this in Boston.

For years, fans have screamed for Hennigan to make a splash – to add veteran leadership and talent. Now that he’s made his choice, he will have to live with the result, but one thing is for sure: Ibaka has talent, and its up to Frank Vogel and the coaching staff to use it.

Pick 41 - Stephen Zimmerman: C+

Amidst the hustle and bustle of draft day, future starters often get overlooked. This may very well be the case for Stephen Zimmerman, a rangy seven-footer with a well-rounded game.

As Zach Oliver previously stated, Zimmerman is a tall, offensive-minded big man with a ton of talent. His combination of above average rebounding and mid-range shooting make him a solid commodity when spacing the floor. He can also operate effectively on the block, and occasionally flash a decent handle.

Though he has some quirks, such as a right elbow that doesn’t extend all the way, Zimmerman has some remarkably NBA-ready skills for his age. He is effective as a pick-and-pop big, all but eliminating the need to re-sign Jason Smith this offseason. This pick is more for the future than the present, and in that future it would be very easy to see Zimmerman bringing some change-of-pace minutes to a playoff team. The only issue with him coming to the Magic is they just made a move for another big, and it's going to be tough for him to break the rotation.

The future of the 2016 draft is yet to be determined, but at least it’s been good theater. It’ll be easy to remember exactly where you were when you heard Serge Ibaka was coming to Orlando.

The Magic made a big splash on draft night, moving a key piece while adding an impact veteran.

The 2016 NBA Draft was an active one for the Orlando Magic.

Holding the 11th pick, the Magic went with a safe selection, taking Gonzaga's Domantas Sabonis to help add to their front court. However, minutes after after putting on the Magic's official draft cap, Sabonis, along with Victor Oladipo and Ersan Ilyasova were on the move to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for Serge Ibaka,

With two second round selections, the Magic weren't done, adding Stephen Zimmerman with the 41st pick before trading the 47th pick to the Portland Trail Blazers for a 2019 second round pick and cash considerations.

Now, just a week away from the beginning of free agency, the Magic's roster sits at nine players for Frank Vogel's inaugural season at the helm.

The addition of Ibaka slides Aaron Gordon down to the three, a position he can play, but might not thrive at as much as he would at power forward. The team also has holes across the board, with needs at shooting guard, small forward, power forward and even center.

With Evan Fournier, Jason Smith, Dewayne Dedmon and Andrew Nicholson all hitting free agency, the Magic will have some decisions to make regarding some mainstays on their roster from this season. Of the group, Fournier is the most likely to return. Since prior to last season the team has said they plan to keep Fournier, and general manager Rob Hennigan echoed those statements following Thursday night's trades.

Add in the fact that Oladipo, the teams starting shooting guard is out of the picture now, and keeping Fournier is a must for the Magic, no matter what the price may be.

As for Smith, Dedmon and Nicholson, there's a chance, at the least, that two of the three could return. All would fill needs at either power forward or center, and likely come at reasonable prices, allowing the Magic to still have the flexibility to go and make a splash in free agency.

The next month will be important for the Magic as they work to round out their roster heading into the dog days of the NBA's offseason. They have money, intriguing pieces and no state income tax, which could help them as they add to their core.

The Magic opted to finish their draft off by moving the 47th pick.

To cap off one of the most eventful drafts in recent history, the Orlando Magic traded the 47th pick to Portland for $1.2 million dollars cash and a 2019 second round pick.

With enough young players on the roster for the player development staff to worry about, general manager Rob Hennigan opted to end the day with only Serge Ibaka and Stephen Zimmerman joining the team.

Still, taking a flyer on a player like Gary Payton II wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world. Payton was a stat monster last year at Oregon State, averaging 16 points, 7.8 boards, and 5 assists per game. The 6’3" prospect brought some of his dad’s intensity on defense to go along with his 2.5 steals a game.

Payton would’ve added depth at guard, but in a backcourt that looks to be bolstered through free agency, it’s understandable that the Magic wanted to keep the roster spot for a more proven player.

The Magic continued to add to their front court in the the second round.

The Orlando Magic have selected Stephen Zimmerman with the 41st pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Zimmerman, 19, averaged 10.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game in his lone season at UNLV.

A center with great size, Zimmerman spent most of his time with his back to the basket on the offensive end, despite his strong play in the pick-and-roll. Zimmerman has high upside as a finisher around the rim, and has shown nice touch on his jump shot, something that could make him more valuable moving forward.

With the likes of Jason Smith and Dewayne Dedmon hitting free agency, Zimmerman gives the Magic a young center with upside to potentially replace one, or both should they not return in free agency. Add in the acquisition of Serge Ibaka earlier in the night, and the Magic have sured up their front court.

After adding Zimmerman, the Magic will have one more selection in the draft, 47th overall.

The Magic made a blockbuster deal acquiring Serge Ibaka from the Thunder.

The Orlando Magic have traded the Victor Oladipo, Ersan Ilyasova and Domantas Sabonis, the 11th pick in the draft, to the Oklahoma City Thunder for power forward Serge Ibaka.

Adding Ibaka gives the Magic a shot blocking option next to Nikola Vucevic, who struggles defending the rim. Moving on from Oladipo shows the team is committed to the likes of Mario Hezonja, Elfrid Payton and Evan Fournier as their backcourt of the future.

With Ilyasova's only partially guaranteed deal, the Thunder will be able to save money by moving on from Ibaka's over $12 million dollar deal.

In 78 games last season, Ibaka averaged 12.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.

Getting Ibaka gives the Magic another piece to potentially intriguing free agents this summer. With needs across the roster, the team will fill multiple needs with Ibaka, allowing them to focus on the remaining holes in free agency.

With Ibaka's pending acquisition, the Magic will now have roughly $38 million in cap space this summer, with the need to re-sign Fournier.

The addition of Ibaka does raise questions about what the team's plans are for Aaron Gordon moving forward. Gordon, who showed more promise as a power forward this season, all but solidified himself as the Magic's staring power forward moving forward.

Gordon has the athleticism to play small forward, which would give them someone who has better size and athleticism to play that position.

Ibaka's ability to step out and knock down jumpshots helps the Magic's spacing as well, which will open up more driving lanes for Payton, Fournier and even Gordon.

The Magic added another young big man to their core in this years draft.

The Orlando Magic have selected Domantas Sabonis with the 11th pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Sabonis, the son of former basketball legend Arvydas Sabonis, burst onto the scene while playing an important role while at Gonzaga. In his sophomore season, Sabonis averaged 17.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and .9 blocks per game.

With Aaron Gordon and Nikola Vucevic locked in as the Magic's starting power forward and center respectively, Sabonis would be relegated to a backup role early on. Sabonis is well developed on the offensive end, including showing potential as a jump shooter last season, but will need time to develop more on the defensive end.

Add in the fact that the Magic's two backup centers -- Dewayne Dedmon and Jason Smith -- are both free agents, it makes a lot of sense for the Magic to take Sabonis. He'd have a chance to work with Frank Vogel and company, who did wonders for Myles Turner last year in Indiana.

Barring any trades, the Magic will be selecting two more times tonight: 41st and 47th.
