Draft Discussion

I haven't had a chance to write extensively about the draft this year, but I'm going to leave a couple thoughts and hopefully stimulate some conversation.

I'm a hard pass on Bol Bol. He doesn't move well in space and doesn't look like he can put on weight. I don't think he sees the floor much in the NBA. His shot looks good, though.

Jarrett Culver's lack of quickness is going to be a major problem. At the start of the year I thought he'd be in the Magic's pick range, which would have been an appropriate place to take him.

I'm way higher on Cam Reddish than NBA teams. I think it's likely that he'll continue to be a plus defender on the wing and at least an average shooter from NBA 3, probably better. Steal rate is one of the stickiest stats from college to the NBA and his 3 pt percentage from NBA 3 was over 36 percent at Duke. Even if his handling, court vision, and self creation don't come around he’ll still be a valuable player. And if they do? Look out. A 6'8" guy with a 7'1" wingspan who can shoot? Sign me up.

RJ Barrett plays a lot of bully ball that won't work in the NBA, because of stronger more athletic defenders and his propensity to push off on almost every play. If his shot doesn't come around he's going to have trouble. He'll still be a plus passer in either case.

We'd be talking about Brandon Clarke as an athletic freak if Zion weren't in this class. He doesn't fit an archetype, but with his defensive skill set and offensive efficiency he'll find a niche somewhere.

Nassir Little, Kevin Porter Jr., and Romeo Langford all had disappointing years relative to preseason expectations. I think the Magic should take a dice roll on one at 16.

I think people overrate DeAndre Hunter's off ball defense and underrate his on-ball stopper potential. Underrate his ability for offensive growth as well. I have a hard time seeing how he fails.

Tyler Herro is the best on-balance shooter in the draft. He has a bunch of secondary skills already figured out as well. Unfortunately he does not have the tools to ever be even an adequate defender in the NBA. I'd pass on him at 16.

I'd pass on power forwards and centers generally at 16 with how the roster is constructed. In the 2nd round, however, I'd go best player available.

I'd like to see Fultz get a crack at point guard and their probably won't be a good one in the Magic's range anyway. If Garland or White did fall I'd take them.

I like Grant Williams and Chuma Okeke. Not really a path to get them, though.

Daniel Gafford was either being overrated last year or underrated this year. My money is on underrated.

Would love to argue about this, that, and the other in the comments. Please post.
