The Magic waived Shelvin Mack...Now what?

D.J. Augustin is now the lone point guard on Orlando’s roster

NBA: Chicago Bulls at Orlando Magic Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Let the Magic’s point guard search begin.

Shelvin Mack, as expected, was waived on Monday, saving the Magic $5 million of his $6 million salary. That leaves D.J. Augustin as the sole point guard on the roster and creates plenty of questions about who the Magic could target in free agency or via trade.

Mack, who signed a two-year deal for $12 million in the summer of 2017, averaged 6.9 points, 3.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game. His playing time increased following the trade of Elfrid Payton, which ultimately led to this unfortunate tweet....

Mack’s production simply didn’t warrant the cap hit for the financially strapped Magic, who are saddled by guaranteed contracts and Aaron Gordon’s cap hold, and will likely have nothing but exceptions to work with. Barring a trade involving Evan Fournier or Nikola Vucevic (everyone needs to stop bringing up the desire to unload Bismack Biyombo. We have no choice but to ride that contract out), the Magic will have to address their point guard needs in free agency.

So let’s take a look at the tiers of available free agent point guards....

Tier 1 - Max Deal Territory

Chris Paul

Tier 2 - Too Pricey

Isaiah Thomas ; Rajon Rondo ; Fred VanVleet (restricted)

Tier 3 - Maybe Something Can Be Worked Out

Shabazz Napier (restricted) ; Tony Parker ; Dante Exum (restricted)

Tier 4 - Where the Magic Will Most Likely Be Shopping

Yogi Ferrell (restricted) ; Shane Larkin ; Tim Frazier ; Andrew Harrison ; Elfrid Payton (restricted)

Tier 5 - When calling them a “veteran” is a nice way of saying they’re old

Derrick Rose ; Raymond Felton ; Devin Harris ; Ty Lawson ; Jarrett Jack ; Michael-Carter Williams ; Ramon Sessions ; Aaron Brooks ; Jose Calderon ; Mario Chalmers ; Jameer Nelson

Potential Trade Targets - “Jeff Weltman on Line One...”

Lonzo Ball ; Eric Bledsoe ; Dennis Schroder ; D’Angelo Russell ; Kemba Walker ; John Wall

Is the Magic’s next point guard listed here? Are there other options out there?

Let’s get creative and talk this out below....
