As the Orlando Magic's season continues to spiral out of control, it's easy to look back at the what-ifs of the 2017 draft, to wonder whether the Magic set themselves up for the future. Facing the Mavericks, an obvious one comes to mind: should the Magic have drafted Dennis Smith Jr.?

While the counting stats aren't anything to write home about, Smith has already flashed the potential that made him one of the most intriguing guard prospects in the draft. If the Magic ultimately decide to move on from Elfrid Payton, Magic fans may feel the sting, especially if Smith's career takes off.

The Magic and Mavericks are in a similar place in the standings, though Dallas's fundamentals look a little bit better (especially in terms of net rating). Orlando's schedule is brutal over the next few weeks, so Dallas might be there only chance for a win for some time.
