Our record with Tobias Harris was 21-28 this year. Our record without him was 14-19 but granted, our leading scorer and leading rebounder (Vucevic) was out with injury for 11 of those losses. Final conclusion? Tobias Harris just didn't push the needle for wins.
Not only was his impact to gaining wins minimal, he truly stunted the growth of our bright future: Aaron Gordon and Mario Hezonja. Mario did not average enough MPs typical of a #5 pick and Gordon's SF/PF style needed more breathing room. There's no doubt their collective stars began to shine once Tobias Harris was gone, which is what Hennigan wanted to see. ""We feel like additional minutes for Mario [Hezonja], Evan [Fournier] and Aaron Gordon are important for our team—both this season and long term," Hennigan said. "I think all of that sort of gets factored into the stew when you make a decision like this. That was certainly a factor."
And trust me, Tobias Harris was MORE THAN HAPPY to be gone. On the day of the trade, Harris exclaimed "I'm ready to make the playoffs!" in a text to ESPN.
So yeah, I personally am glad we no longer have a player who's looking for a free ride to more wins. A free ride to playoffs. I'd really like players on our team who want to win and push the needle towards more wins. I hope Tobias Harris enjoys a first round exit this year, but I also hope he enjoys his playoff arrival at the coaching expense of a Drummond-led team. We all know SVG knows how to coach center-driven teams to playoffs.
And for us, we got more cap room to make decisions on Fournier and the list of free agents available this year! Kudos to Rob Hennigan and the Orlando Magic for setting us up for a brighter future while making improvements in our win column year-over-year!
