J.J. Redick talks about Stan and his time in Orlando

2

Highlights (starting at around the 13:30 mark):

--"I don't think I would be the player I am without having played for Stan [...] I was basically forced to play mistake-free basketball or I was gonna get yanked, so it reinforced my perfectionism [...] He's someone that I absolutely loved playing for."

--When Stan was fired: "We talked that day, and some of the stuff he said to me, it actually got me emotional because I thought I was gonna be out of the league my first year with him, and then five years later he's telling me I'm the ultimate pro, and I'm one of the three guys he's most enjoyed coaching his entire career."

--"Dwight was all in. I don't know about that last year, [...] but those first four years with Stan he was all in."

--"I would say in '10 we left something on the table. I thought we were the best team in basketball that year."

--'11 season, with the addition of Arenas and the loss of Lewis: "Our locker room was different, no question. But Dwight that year, I think should've been the MVP."

--"[Dwight's] free agency's approaching - he wants to go to a bigger market, which is every player's right to choose where they wanna go during free agency, and I wanna say that there was a deal on the table, right before the season started, right after the lockout ended [...] I can remember being in the shower, after practice, [...] him saying 'I love you guys, I'm headed to Brooklyn, trade's going down later tonight.' So I'm heading to Twitter, I'm on HoopsHype, going 'when is this gonna go down? And it never went down."

--"I think for the rest of the season, there was an underlying resentment because of that."

--A fascinating recount from Redick's perspective of the conference call between Dwight and the DeVos family persuading him to opt in to his contract, as well as the subsequent bus ride afterwards (20:53 mark)

--"Given what happened with LeBron in 2010, the mindset of teams at the time was, 'My superstar can't guarantee he's gonna re-sign with us, then we need to get assets in return.'"
