The fifth pick in the upcoming NBA Draft could be a tough spot from which to grab a franchise player. It certainly won’t be high enough to get either of the draft’s potential star centers, Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor.
After the two bigs, the next two guys most often considered to have All-Star potential are point guards D’Angelo Russell and Emmanuel Mudiay. Neither makes much sense for the Magic, who have their backcourt of the near-future set with Elfrid Payton and Victor Oladipo – though best player available would (hopefully) beat positional fit if either was left on the board.
Some think Euro prospects Kristaps Porzingis and Mario Hezonja could be NBA stars. But are the Magic really ready to risk another Fran Vasquez (or even a Nikoloz Tskitishvili) by picking one of these two young pros?
Doesn’t Justise Winslow have too many overlapping skills with the Magic’s recent draft picks? Would defensive stud Willie Cauley-Stein be too difficult to incorporate in a Scott Skiles offence?
If every potential pick carries a question mark, how about the Magic leverage their position into some assets?
If GM Rob Hennigan is still unsure about who he wants in the draft, or even if the player he has decided on is predicted to go lower than fifth, wouldn’t a trade move down the draft order help him to get more value out of the high draft choice?
What if they traded the 5th pick for a package of draft selections and/or young players on rookie contracts? Which of the following trades would you consider if you were in charge of the Magic on draft day?
(Note: I am a realist, so don’t expect any ‘pick 5 for the Kings' 6th and Cousins, then sign Middleton …’)
Denver Nuggets
Magic’s No 5 for: Denver’s pick 7 plus New York’s 2016 first-round picks, on which Denver has swap rights.
Magic take: BPA – which hopefully would be the player the Magic would have taken at 5. Chances are Hennigan's favourite of Winslow, Cauley-Stein, Hezonja and Porzingis will still be on the board at 7 (wouldn’t Aaron Gordon still have been there at 7 or 8 last season?). It’s a small gamble but one that could net them a nice (possibly very nice) 2016 draft asset.
Sacramento Kings
Magic’s No 5 for: Sacramento’s pick 6 plus Nik Stauskas.
Magic take: If Mudiay drops to 5 and the Kings are as keen on him as it seems, the Magic could select the Congo guard and try to use him to nab Stauskas, a guy who had a poor rookie season but possesses an elite skill that could make him a valuable NBA player sooner rather than later. The Magic could then still draft their number one choice.
Boston Celtics
Magic’s No 5 for: Boston’s picks 16 and 33 plus Brooklyn’s unprotected 2016 first-round pick.
Magic take: A pair of project power forwards from a pool that could include Myles Turner, Kevon Looney, Montrezl Harrell, Bobby Portis and Cliff Alexander, in the hope at least one outperforms his draft slot. The other would get D-League duty. We all then begin sticking pins in our Brook Lopez voodoo dolls in the hope the Magic will be back in the high lottery in 2016 – but as a playoff team, having taken the Nets’ spot as well as their draft pick.
Would you pull the trigger on any of the above trades? Are there any other such draft day deals you would consider?
