finally, I can let out a deep sigh of relief. This nba season had me so worried for my magic. All the three point shooting and increased scoring totals had me scared to death. How in the world could the magic keep up with this new era of ball. its not like our roster was desperate for scorers, victor, nikola, and harris strike me as a nice triplet of versatile scoring options, their ceilings? I couldnt tell you, but sprinkle in a virtuoso passing gaurd like elfrid payton and I personally think we've got something to work with. But from my point I digress. Whether or not the Cleveland Cavaliers or Goldenstate Warriors emerge from this finals, two things stand out to me more than anything. NO its not shooting. NO its scoring. And No its not beautiful ball movement and timely passes. Its Defense and Depth. Think about it. Goldenstate got here because, obviously, Stephen Curry is unreal from any spot on the court with his shot, and don't even get me started with Lebron James, Im serious, Im not mentioniong his name again, he's been unworldly. but dont be blind my pinstripped followers. Defense and Depth will rule the day. Kerr, the coach of GS, has a team and bench seemingly of every kind of nba player at his disposal. A versatile scoring big who can play 4/5? hello speights. A defensive menace who can tranform into a point gaurd and run the offense? whats up iggy and to a lesser extent draymond green. A defense first big, capable of giving quality rim protection? whats poppin bogut, and 7foot ezili. A point gaurd who can play and defend all wing positions? Shaun livingston im looking at you. A talented offensive big man who has no glaring weaknesses creating his own shot or others? good to see you david lee. A small ball four, who doesnt love those, who can spread the floor and gaurd positions 3/4? Harrison barnes. I still havent named the mvp of the league or a player almost capable of matching him step for step in terms of offensive explosion. And on the other side of the coin sits the cavaliers who have turned into a defensive force almost overnight, with their depth being tested seemingly at the start of every round. And here they sit in the finals with defense as their calling card, and Lebron ,ok last time i promise, as there singular offensive source with all stars kyrie irving and Kevin love out. But enough about those other teams. What about the magic? Where do they fit in all this? Good question buddy, Ill tell you. I look at the team that Rob Hennigan has put together and it sorta makes me giggle on the inside because those two qualities: defense, and depth seem to be at the heart of what he is building, and with that being said i can safely predict what this magic team will look like in the future and how this summer will shake out. Expect for Tobias Harris to be back with the magic because guys with his skill set dont come around very often, trust me. Maurice harkless will be utilized next season. And there is a reason guys like victor oladipo, aaron gordon and elfrid payton where hand picked by management to be the face of this franchise. Their calling cards? You guessed it, Defense. And lots of it. This teams offense will continue to improve through individual progress and chemistry. But the sprinkle on top of all of this is Scott Skiles. Thats right, the guy who is a clear cut defensive coach. He will shape and mold this group of young athletic players into a terrorizing group orlando fans have not seen in a while. Magic fans get ready, our time is coming.
