With the deadline to exercise options on rookie contracts rapidly approaching, the Orlando Magic announced they have picked up third and fourth year options on four players. Victor Oladipo, Elfrid Payton, Aaron Gordon and Shabazz Napier will be guaranteed through the 2016-17 season, with Payton, Gordon and Napier having options remaining for the 2017-18 season. Oladipo, entering his third year in the league, will be eligible for a contract extension next summer.
Picking up the options on all four is no surprise for the Magic. Oladipo, Payton and Gordon, all top-10 picks in their respective drafts, figure to play key roles for the Magic for many years to come.
Reports in the previous days suggested that the team would hold onto Napier, whom they acquired from the Miami Heat this summer. Napier, who struggled mightily in his rookie season, strung together a series of strong performances in the preseason which all but locked him into getting his option picked up.
Following their preseason finale on Friday night, the Magic finalized their roster by waiving big man Nnanna Egwu. They'll head into the season with 14 players under contract. Picking up the options on Oladipo, Payton, Gordon and Napier puts the team at nine players with guaranteed deals for next season.
