With the 12th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, the Orlando Magic selected Dario Šarić. But as David Aldridge of NBA.com reports, the Magic will trade Šarić to the Philadelphia 76ers for the Draft rights to Elfrid Payton.
In addition, the Magic will send a future second-round Draft choice to Philadelphia, according to Orlando Sentinel scribe Josh Robbins.
Payton, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Louisiana-Lafayette, averaged 19.2 points, six rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 2.3 steals in his junior season, shooting 50.9 percent from the floor. Payton is dynamic with the ball in his hands and can break down defenses off the bounce with his speed, but, like a lot of young players, struggles to shoot from the outside.
Payton's arrival enables Victor Oladipo to play more minutes off the ball at shooting guard. It could also signal that Jameer Nelson's 10-year Orlando career may be nearing its end: Nelson's contract for the 2014/15 season is only partially guaranteed, according to ShamSports' salary database.
The Magic officially don't own any other picks in Thursday's Draft, but the Denver Nuggets will choose on their behalf with the 56th overall selection as part of the reported deal involving Arron Afflalo. That trade will not become official until after the Draft.
