After five weeks of balloting, Orlando Weekly has announced its Best of Orlando 2013 winners, and there was at least one notable development in the Sports and Recreation category: Orlando City Soccer surpassed the Orlando Magic for Best Local Sports Team honors. In addition, Orlando City coach Adrian Heath topped the Magic's Jacque Vaughn for Best Local Sports Coach.
Orlando City's win marks the first time since 2006 the Magic did not earn Weekly readers' recognition in the Best Local Sports Team category; that year, the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League earned that distinction, with the Magic beating the UCF (then-Golden) Knights for first runner-up.
The Magic are coming off a season in which they won fewer games than any other team in the NBA; in contrast, Orlando City finished its most recent season atop the USL Pro standings, earning a first-round bye in the playoffs before the fifth-seeded Wilmington Hammerheads upset them in the Semifinals.
In the 2013 USL Pro campaign, Orlando City trails only the Richmond Kickers in the standings, and has already clinched a playoff berth.
