The Turkish basketball team Fenerbahçe will attempt to sign Orlando Magic forward Hedo Türkoğlu "for the upcoming season," according to Can Pelister, who writes for the Turkish basketball website trendbasket.net. Pelister cites "a source close to the team." Fenerbahçe is based in Türkoğlu's hometown of Istanbul.
Türkoğlu is still under contract for the 2013/14 NBA season, but only half of his $12 million salary is guaranteed. Orlando can free a roster spot by waiving Türkoğlu and paying him $6 million, which salary will still count against Orlando's cap. If the Magic decide to cut ties with Türkoğlu, the 34-year-old could sign with Fenerbahçe or any other club.
In 11 appearances for the Magic in 2012/13, Türkoğlu has averaged 2.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.6 assists. He said on Wednesday that he'd still like to be part of the Magic's future, but Orlando's decision to bench him and Al Harrington for that night's game against the Charlotte Bobcats, leaving the team with just eight players, speaks volumes about the Magic's priorities.
