Calgary Flames fire former Orlando Magic general manager John Weisbrod

The "hockey GM" is on the outs in Calgary.

The Calgary Flames announced Thursday that they have "relieved" general manager Jay Feaster and assistant GM John Weisbrod "of their duties." Weisbrod, of course, served as the Orlando Magic's GM from March 12th, 2004 through his resignation on May 23rd, 2005.

During Weisbrod's Magic tenure, the so-called "hockey GM" made several key decisions which shaped the future of the franchise, chief among them choosing Dwight Howard over Emeka Okafor with the first overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft. Howard went on to become the Magic's all-time leader in points, rebounds, and blocked shots.

Weisbrod was also responsible for trading All-Star swingman Tracy McGrady away from Orlando, sending him, Juwan Howard, Reece Gaines, and Tyronn Lue to the Houston Rockets for Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, and Kelvin Cato. Most NBA observers, including McGrady himself, believe that McGrady's tenure in Orlando would have continued were it not for Weisbrod.

Weisbrod joined the Flames in the 2011/12 season. Since leaving the Magic, he has served in the Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins organizations.
