Teams hoping to acquire J.J. Redick from the Orlando Magic before the NBA trade deadline on February 21st need to offer Orlando "draft picks and young talent on a rookie contract," reports Ric Bucher of Comcast. That wishlist would seem to eliminate the Boston Celtics' chances of acquiring the veteran shooting guard, with Bucher citing one source as saying "there's no deal to be had" for the Celtics. In recent days, Marc Stein and David Baumann had reported on Boston's interest in acquiring Redick. Bucher also says the Indiana Pacers are "a longshot" to land Redick for the same reasons the Celtics are.

Redick's appeal is obvious: in his seventh season, the Duke product is averaging career-highs in minutes (31.4), points (14.9), assists (4.4), and field-goal accuracy (45.8 percent). The fact that his contract is reasonably sized and expiring makes him an ideal pickup for any team looking to bolster its bench for a postseason run.

Getting good value for Redick may be a challenge for Rob Hennigan, Orlando's first-year general manager. Given Redick's pending unrestricted free agency, and the fact that he is ineligible to sign a contract extension, any team looking to acquire him faces the risk that he will leave in unrestricted free agency. What sort of loot will teams be willing to offer Hennigan in exchange for what may turn out to be a 30-game rental of a career backup?

We should have the answer to that question in fairly short order as the deadline draws closer and the rumors continue to leak.
