Grizzlies 115, Magic 100: Redick Scores 23 for Orlando, but Memphis Pulls Away in Fourth

Six Orlando Magic players scored in double figures, including Arron Afflalo, who scored 10 points in 19 minutes in his preseason debut. It wasn't enough, though, as the Magic scored just 14 points on 4 of 21 (19%) shooting in the final quarter.

Memphis jumped out quickly on the Magic, shooting 64% in the first quarter on their way to a 33-21 lead after one. The Magic got back in the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Grizzlies by six to cut the Memphis lead to 55-49 at the half. Rudy Gay proved to be a handful for the Magic, as he scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half, while Redick had 11 for the Magic.

Orlando then proceeded to play nearly flawless on offense in the third quarter, scoring 37 points on blistering 15 of 19 (78.9%) field goal shooting, including 4 of 5 on 3s. Redick scored 10 points in the quarter, and center Nikola Vucevic scored 8 of his 16 points. Memphis nearly matched the Magic's output, scoring 33 points of their own in the quarter on 12 of 21 (57.1%) shooting.

It was anyone's game going into the fourth quarter, as the Grizzlies held a slim 88-86 lead. That was as close as Orlando would get, as Memphis outscored the Magic 16-5 to open the fourth to lead 104-91 with just over five minutes remaining on their way to the 115-100 victory. The Grizzlies shot 51.1% from the field and 62 1/2% on 3s for the game.

Redick was the star for the Magic with his 23 points, as he shot 8 of 13, including 4 of 5 on 3s in 30 minutes. He had help though, as Vucevic added 16 points on 7 of 10 shooting, along with 9 rebounds. Hedo Turkoglu scored 14 points, shooting 4 of 7 from 3-point range. Jameer Nelson scored 10 points along with a team-high 7 assists. Glen Davis had one of his poorer games of the preseason, scoring 12 points on 6 of 14 shooting and just one rebound in 30 minutes, but led the team in blocks with three.

It was an encouraging debut for Magic shooting guard Arron Afflalo, as he did not appear rusty even though he missed the first six preseason games. Afflalo shot 4 of 7, including 2 of 3 on 3s in his 19 minutes. He also added 2 assists, but had four personal fouls.

Magic swingman DeQuan Jones scored 7 points in 20 minutes along with 6 rebounds. The two other players he is competing against to make the final Magic roster, Josh McRoberts and Justin Harper, did not score as they played only a combined 8 minutes.

Two Magic players who have been playing well this preseason, point guard E'Twaun Moore and rookie power forward Andrew Nicholson, had poor games. Moore scored 1 point on 0 of 5 shooting along with 6 turnovers in 22 minutes, and Nicholson scored 6 points on 3 of 8 shooting, though he did grab 6 rebounds.

In addition to Gay's 20 points, Grizzlies' center Marc Gasol scored 18 points with 13 rebounds, and power forward Zach Randolph also added 18 points.

Despite the poor-shooting fourth quarter for the Magic, they still shot 48.7% for the game and connected on 12 of 21 (57.1%) 3-pointers. They may not be as prolific a 3-point shooting team this season as they were under Stan Van Gundy, but they should still be capable of having solid nights shooting from long range with players like Afflalo, Redick, Nelson, and Turkoglu.
