Draft Day Disappointment

Like many others on this site, I was super excited about draft day. We had two lottery picks in a terrific draft, a trade chip in Afflalo that many people thought would net us another lottery pick, and plenty of cap room flexibility. The possibilities were endless. And then draft day came...

It started off with the news that Afflalo had been traded... for Evan Fournier and a late second round pick. We traded a borderline all-star for a likely bench player and the rights to draft a player that has a good chance of never making an NBA roster. The trade also increased our cap space, but we had plenty of cap space anyway.

Next came the fourth pick in the draft and the young and exciting Dante Exum had fallen to us. He was a bit of a mystery and a raw prospect, but he was a player the fans could get excited about. Instead, we passed over Exum to take... Aaron Gordon. It's not a terrible pick by any means. He is young, versatile, and one of the best defenders in the draft. But he was the 8th player on my big board, and we drafted him at 4.

It's okay, we still got a good player and have another lottery pick to come. On to the 12th pick. And with the 12th pick we take... Dario Saric, a player that won't come to the NBA for a minimum of two years. BUT WAIT... the Orlando Magic are trading Saric to Philadelphia for Elfrid Payton! This is GREAT! We get the player I wanted in a position of need. I loved getting Payton, and he is the main reason I was okay with passing on Exum at 4. And then I found out we had to throw in a future first AND second round pick. I'm all for using assets to get the players you want, but instead of getting Payton with the 12th pick like I thought we could, we get him with the 12th pick, a future 1st round pick, and a future second round pick. Great...

I am still optimistic about the future of this team. Gordon and Payton are both great players and Afflalo would have been gone after this year anyway. For all I know we may look back in a few years and say that the Magic absolutely dominated this draft. Best case Gordon has the potential to become one of the best defenders in the entire NBA, and with a lot of work becomes a Blake Griffin type player on offense. A defensive backcourt of Oladipo and Payton is scary good and they can be great offensively if they can develop their shooting and playmaking. Fournier is still very young and can develop into a great sixth man. We have a ton of young, promising players on the roster and have plenty of cap space to acquire a big time free agent next summer.

We have the potential to become a very good team for a long time, but for all of the excitement I had before draft day, I can't help but feel a little disappointed with how today unfolded.
