During this losing season, I have to look for the good things that Magic displays throughout the season. But last night, the Magic faced the San Antonio Spurs and they were annoying negatives. Towards the end of the game, Magic kept turning over the ball trying to get the ball to Arron Afflalo. Magic constantly ran that Afflalo play call when off-ball first curl occurs, then Afflalo runs the curl for the ball. That play has to have a counter. The first curl in the Afflalo play call has to be run hard and pass to more often. The over usage of Afflalo made me recollect how the ball was distributed with Afflalo out of the game. When Afflalo was on the bench, Magic shared the ball more. They were plays called for a different player each possession, or the play call was stopped but they rotated the ball that eventually led to a score. The over usage of Afflalo on the court shows the lack of usage of Vucevic. In the beginning of the season, coach Vaughn emphasized giving the ball more to Vucevic and it worked. All eyes weren't on Afflalo getting the ball. Vucevic took advantage of more ball possession. For some reason, they have deviated from that plan. A big man like Nikola will gain confidence from getting more ball possession. The advantage of Vucevic with the ball in the post, is they can run plays from there such as, cuts, off-ball screens for Afflalo or for any wing player. It's not like Vucevic is a terrible passer. Vucevic has the repertoire to beat the best of centers and definitely the second tier centers. Jacque Vaughn can't put all the offensive focus on Afflalo. Vaughn has to use Afflalo as a decoy a bit more.
