The 7 ft 1 Baylor sophomore center/power forward has loads of talent. Can shoot from the outside, is a legit rim protector, and even has handles. He has a lot of potential, but this season has been a quiet one for him. Only averaging 11.1 points, and 5.5 rebounds, this was not the season he had in plan, because he was projected to be a lottery pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Now, he's projected to be a late first rounder, or even a early second rounder! However, forget the mock drafts, Austin has been balling the past few games and been picking up his game as the season went on. (Especially averaging 3.2 blocks per game this season)
Yesterday, against Oklahoma, he had 18 points (8-12 from the field, 2-4 from the 3pt line), and collected 5 blocks. The end of last month against West Virginia, he had 7 blocks and 19 points. And he's had other solid, if not close to amazing games this season, but his only problem was his consistency. Now, here's why I think we should draft him with our WoNK pick.
His attitude, versatility, and fit. Let's look into his attitude. The dude is basically a Joakim Noah in college emotion wise. I'm not saying we don't have those type of guys on our teams, but having Austin would really pump up a crowd. Also, he never quits. Never. In fact, you may not know this, buy he's half blind. He has a glass eye, covering his very red and small right eye. He had this problem since high school, and yet, he never gave up, even with the poor eyesight. The dude still shoots, on a fairly consistent basis with technically one eye! If he can put that relentlessness in his game, which he has, it'd be great for us.
He's also very versatile. He can do NUMEROUS things on offense, whether it's a step back j, three pointer, post moves, sky hooks, whatever! He can play both power forward and center, although in the NBA, I'm sure, considering his skinny frame, I'd imagine him being a PF more. So, overall, versatility wise he's great.
Well, we kind of need a power forward. Harris probably isn't our answer for a full-time PF, and either is Kyle O'Quinn, so Austin would fit right it.
That's a solid lineup. So, I'm not saying that he'd be our first option for the WoNK, not at all. However, he's definitely a consideration, and his mock draft position should means nothing to his skill, and potential.
