Tracy McGrady retires from NBA

The former Magic superstar said Monday he's leaving the NBA behind.

In an appearance on First Take Monday morning, free-agent swingman Tracy McGrady announced his retirement from the NBA. The 34-year-old finished his career with the San Antonio Spurs, with whom he signed for the 2013 Playoffs.

McGrady ends his playing days as one of the Orlando Magic's greatest players, with Magic career averages of 28.1 points, seven rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1.5 steals, and one block in 39.4 minutes. His 2002/03 campaign, in which he averaged 32.1 points in 39.4 minutes, is arguably the best single season by an individual Magic player.

Orlando fans derided McGrady for never leading the Magic to advance in the Playoffs, but such a criticism isn't necessarily fair; in none of Orlando's series losses was it the favored team, and McGrady did not have much support from his teammates. That he dominated to the extent that he did despite the fact that opposing defenses knew to key on him attests to his incredible skill level.

The Magic traded McGrady to the Houston Rockets before the 2004/05 season, where he continued his streak of second-round playoff futility. He spent the last four seasons of his career with five different teams: Houston, the New York Knicks, the Detroit Pistons, the Atlanta Hawks, and finally the Spurs.
