NBA Draft 2013: Slotting Victor Oladipo and Romero Osby into Magic's depth chart

Jacque Vaughn - USA TODAY Sports

How do the additions of Victor Oladipo and Romero Osby affect the Magic as free agency opens?

Here's a quick look at how Victor Oladipo and Romero Osby, the Orlando Magic's selections in the 2013 NBA Draft, fit in on their depth chart as Orlando enters free agency. Free agents and players with only partially guaranteed contracts are listed in italics.

Point guard: Jameer Nelson, Beno Udrih
Shooting guard: Arron Afflalo, Victor Oladipo, E'Twaun Moore, Doron Lamb
Small forward: Maurice Harkless, DeQuan Jones, Hedo Türkoğlu
Power forward: Glen Davis, Tobias Harris, Andrew Nicholson, Romero Osby, Al Harrington
Center: Nik Vučević, Kyle O'Quinn

A few notes on those free agents and potential free agents:

  • Udrih is an unrestricted free agent.

  • Moore's contract becomes fully guaranteed if he's still on the team as of July 1st.

  • Jones will be an unrestricted free agent unless the Magic extend him a qualifying offer, for which there is a July 1st deadline. Rob Hennigan, Orlando's general manager, said Thursday that he's yet to reach a decision on either Moore or Jones.

  • Only half of Turkoglu's $12 million salary is guaranteed. The Magic are expected to waive him.

  • Half of Harrington's salary in each of the final two years of his contract is guaranteed. Orlando is expected to work on a buyout agreement, as the 33-year-old is certainly not in its future plans.
  • O'Quinn's salary becomes guaranteed if he's still on the team for opening night.

Even if Orlando brings Moore back, it will once again be thin at point guard behind Nelson. Hennigan said Thursday that the Magic "see Oladipo as a guard," though I have my doubts that he can run an offense. I expect the Magic to shop for bargain point guards in free agency.

The Magic also have a glut of bigs. They can thin the herd by shifting Harris to small forward; he was pressed into power forward duty due to Davis' broken foot. But moving Harris down would seem to strand Harkless a bit, as he lacks traditional guard skills, yet is probably too important to the team's future to come off the bench.

Osby isn't a lock to make the team, but he'll certainly have the chance to impress in Summer League and later in camp.

One would think that Hennigan would consider trading one of the bigs--presumably Davis or Nicholson--for depth at guard, and specifically to address the Magic's lack of outside shooters.
