NBA trade rumors: Rival executives expect Magic to trade J.J. Redick, according to report

J.J. Redick - Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

The veteran guard has an expiring contract.

The 2013 NBA trade deadline is 3 PM on February 21st, and as that date draws closer, most teams around the league believe that the Orlando Magic will trade J.J. Redick. That news comes from Marc Stein of ESPN.com.

"The Orlando sharpshooter is the player, with [Rudy] Gay off the board, most teams cite when asked to name a player who will definitely be dealt between now and the deadline," says Stein, who also paraphrases his former ESPN colleague Ric Bucher in saying that Orlando wants future draft considerations and a young player on a rookie contract in exchange for Redick.

With the playoffs a virtual impossibility for the 14-32 Magic and no guarantee that Redick will re-sign as an unrestricted free agent in July, it makes sense for Orlando to cash him in while his value is at an all-time high. Redick's enjoying the best season of his seven-year professional career, with his per-game averages of 15.4 points, 4.4 assists, and 31.9 minutes all serving as personal bests. His field goal percentage of 45.6 percent is also a career-high.

Redick holds a leadership role in the locker room and is the Magic's biggest presence in the community, so trading him, even at the height of his value, would come at a cost beyond basketball.
