NBA trade rumors: Magic might not make a trade, according to report

J.J. Redick - Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

None of the offers Orlando has received for J.J. Redick has been acceptable, so the Magic might stand pat at the trade deadline.

The NBA trade deadline looms on February 21st, but despite all the chatter involving their players, notably J.J. Redick, the Orlando Magic may not make any deals, reports Steve Kyler of HOOPSWORLD.

Barring a big change, Orlando, says Kyler, will look the same way after the deadline as it does presently. Though "the Magic have been engaged in trade talks for the better part of a month," none of the offers they've received really make sense for them. "The Magic have decided that no deal is better than a bad deal and might sit out the deadline," Kyler says.

Orlando's goals as it continues its rebuild are to acquire young players on affordable contracts; to maintain long-term salary-cap flexibility; and to add to its core of hard-working, coachable players. None of the offers the Magic have received to date would help them reach those goals. Kyler cites a source as saying the Magic are asking a "steep" price in return for Redick, who's due to be a free agent in July. Orlando doesn't feel much pressure to move him at the deadline because it can always try to work out a sign-and-trade deal in free agency if it elects not to re-sign the seven-year veteran.

Kyler advises Magic fans to "keep an eye on" the $17.8 million traded player exception Orlando received when it traded Dwight Howard in August. Orlando can use that exception to absorb a player from another team looking to shed salary, and could gain a future draft choice or a young player as payment for its willingness to facilitate such a deal.
