Should the Magic "sell high" on Jameer Nelson?

Jameer Nelson - USA TODAY Sports

An ESPN scribe contends that Orlando should trade Nelson before the February 21st deadline.

Should NBA teams "sell high" on some of their players before the 2013 trading deadline on February 21st? That's the question that Kevin Pelton of ESPN Insider poses in Tuesday's PER Diem column for the Worldwide Leader. The idea is that teams with players performing well above their station would do well to trade them now rather than risk their value falling in subsequent seasons or losing them for nothing in free agency.

Pelton names Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson as one such player whose team might consider trading him. Nelson just turned 31, but as Pelton notes "Nelson has been able to hold off the slide that point guards often suffer in their early 30s," and in doing so has increased his trade value. Nelson's per-game averages of 14.9 points and 7.5 assists aren't far from the numbers (16.7 points, 5.4 assists) that made him an All-Star in the 2008/09 season.

Pelton suggests that Orlando look to trade Nelson, perhaps to the Utah Jazz for Mo Williams.

Nelson re-signed with the Magic in July, inking a three-year deal worth more than $25 million, according to ShamSports. The final season of that contract is not fully guaranteed, offering Orlando, or whichever team holds his rights, some flexibility before the 2014/15 season begins.
