2014 Restricted Free Agents Who Could Receive An Offer Sheet From The Magic

The Orlando Magic are shaping up to be extremely active in free agency in the summer of 2014. The Magic as currently constructed, will have less than 40,000,000 in salary commitments for the 2014-15 season! If any of the following, Arron Afflalo, Glen Davis, or Jameer Nelson were to find new destinations, this could carve out even more cap space. All this adds up to one thing, in the summer of 2014 Orlando will have their check book flush with cash. This will be Rob Hennigan's first opportunity to utilize free agency to shop for the ingredients of a championship roster!

When looking at the unrestricted free agent class of 2014 there are some big names, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh all have player options that would allow them to opt into free agency. Saying that, I don't think they are viable candidates for the Magic. I think Rob Hennigan will be turning his attention towards the resticted free agents of 2014. With the Magic having an abundance of cap flexibility, this instantly makes them big time players. Hennigan could be oppposing general managers worst nightmare. He has the ability to emulate a strategy Daryl Morey used to great success. By targeting teams that are facing cap constraints, Hennigan could offer front or back loaded poison pill contracts. Below I will list a number of possible RFA targets with a brief summary on why I feel they could be targets for the Orlando Magic

1.Ed Davis-Memphis Grizzlies, Ed Davis is a long athletic power forward. He could be a perfect compliment to Nikola Vucevic. He could add a shot blocking, paint protecting component that Orlando has desperately needed. Most Magic fans think the roster is already overstocked at PF, but looking at it objectively they are not. Andrew Nicholson isn't ready for a feature role, Tobias Harris is a tweener possibly better suited for the 3, and Glen Davis should have a new adress relatively soon.

2 Ekpe Udoh-Milwaukee Bucks, Same rationale as Ed Davis

3 Greg Monroe-Detroit Pistons, Monroe can play both power forward or center. He isn't as defensive orientated as the players mentioned above, but he is an efficient scorer, strong rebounder, and a talanted passer out of the post. This high post passing pulls defenders out of the paint. When spacing the floor in this manner, it creates room for players to cut and slash to the rim. It also has the ability to set up open looks on the perimeter for shooters playing off the ball. This could be ideal to support the hypothetical combo gaurd backcourt of Oladipo/Smart!

4 Greg Smith-Houston Rockets, This player is probably one of the best kept secrets in the NBA. This backup center is very talanted. He has a combination of size and athleticism. In a game against the Lakers last season he outshined Dwight Howard. He could provide depth at our center spot. He could also provide the Magic some flexibility and leverage with Nik Vucevic and his upcoming contract negotiations.

5 Evan Turner-Philadelphia 76ers, Turner is undoubtedly one of the most talented free agent targets. He is one of the best scoring small forwards in the league. He is not the best three point shooter, but he is a scorer in the truest sense. Put the ball in his hands and let him go to work. I feel if the Magic were to obtain a pass first point guard he could be perfect next to Oladipo. However if you are a Marcus Smart fan he is not our guy. Having three inefficient shooters on the perimeter all wanting to put the ball on the floor would be the kiss of death!
