Minnesota has pretty much put Alexey Shved and Derrick Williams on the trading block for veteran talent. I'm not terribly impressed with either of these young men (24 and 22 respectively) as professional basketball players (though Williams is still young, and was a #2 overall pick due to upside a few years ago), but I know a team with veteran talent to sell. I also know what a team under pressure looks like. Minnesota is under pressure to make some noise in the playoffs, so that they can try to convince Kevin Love to stay. Canis Hoopus article here
Currently, the Wolves have a dismal 2nd unit, and are playing their starting 5 a league high number of minutes together as a result. They also have exactly one real shooting guard on the roster in Kevin Martin. Shved is the second guard in their backcourt with JJ Barea. Williams is only seeing 17 minutes a night right now.
My proposal is Afflalo for Shved and Williams. link
The salaries work out. The Magic take back about a million more in salary than they give up, but both incoming deals have 2 years left, whereas Afflalo has 3. For such a deal to take place, there would have to be a sweetener coming Orlando's way.
Shabazz Muhammad (while I still worry he has character issues) is only playing 2-3 min a night right now, and they're obviously not developing him quickly or at all, since they're in "win now" mode. Gorgui Dieng interests me more, and he's only playing 6 minutes a night, again, with no visible intent to be developed. The Wolves wouldn't be able to offer a first round pick until 2016, though that might be of interest. They have 2nd round picks in 2014 from the Warriors and Pelicans. I would hope those wouldn't be the sole compensation for letting go of Afflalo. Pick situation
The Wolves do it to add some scoring to their desperate 2nd unit.
The Magic do it to try out Derrick Williams to see if a change of scenery does him good, and for whatever else they can get included in the deal. This deal also allows Oladipo to slide back to his more natural SG position, as Shved is a natural PG.
Let's be honest though. The Magic do this because keeping Afflalo is not in the future interests of the team.
