Jameer Nelson becomes Magic's all-time assist leader

Jameer Nelson - USA TODAY Sports

During Orlando's game against the Trail Blazers on Monday, the veteran point guard surpassed Scott Skiles' team record with his 2777th assist.

Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson became the franchise's all-time assist leader on Monday against the Portland Trail Blazers, dishing the 2777th assist of his career. Nelson found Andrew Nicholson right at the rim at the 4:12 mark of the first quarter to break Scott Skiles' team record.

When asked about the prospect of breaking Skiles' record, Nelson said, "I guess it’s a tribute to my hard work, and also to the organization to have faith in me to keep me here as a player," according to John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com.

Nelson has spent his entire career, now in its ninth season, with the Magic after Orlando acquired his Draft rights from the Denver Nuggets. He signed a contract extension in 2007, just hours before tipoff of the season's first game, and re-signed with Orlando as a free agent in July 2012.

Skiles joined the Magic in 1989/90, their inaugural season, and played for them until 1992/93. He still owns the NBA record for assists in a single game, with 30, set on December 30th, 1990, against Denver.

Nelson's career-high in assists is 14, a mark he's reached twice, most recently on February 15th, 2012, against the Philadelphia 76ers.
