NBA trade rumors: Celtics "covet" J.J. Redick, according to report

J.J. Redick - Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

Boston has its eye on Redick, the Magic two-guard averaging career-bests in scoring and assists, a report indicates.

Count the Boston Celtics among the teams interested in acquiring J.J. Redick from the Orlando Magic before the NBA trading deadline on February 21st. David Baumann of Bright House Sports Network, citing "sources," says the Celtics "covet" Orlando's sixth-man.

Boston would seem to be an odd fit for Redick, considering that it needs another big man more than another wing player. However, it's possible that Courtney Lee's disappointing performance since joining the Celtics via sign-and-trade over the summer--the former Magic player is shooting just 32.3 percent from three-point range and averaging a mere 6.8 points in 22.9 minutes--has made Redick all the more attractive by comparison.

In his seventh season from Duke, Redick is averaging career-bests in field-goal shooting (44.8 percent) as well as per-game scoring (14.6 points), assists (4.5), and minutes played (31). He is earning $6.19 million in 2012/13, according to ShamSports, and will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. Because his contract is expiring, his future with Orlando remains up in the air, and the Magic may elect to trade him in order to avoid losing him in free agency.
