Soon the Orlando Magic will select a new GM, the newly hired GM should immediately have his focus on the 2012 NBA Draft. Evan Dunlap has broken down several potential first round draft prospects for the Magic; I will attempt to cover several potential second round draft prospects for the Magic. This Fanpost covers another potential prospect: PG Scott Machado
Recently hitting the age of 22, Machado could provide a long-term solution at the backup PG postion for the Magics. There's two things that make him a great prospect and slightly stand out from other second round talent PGs: Great vision leading to high assists and a lower amount of turnovers and the fact that while many prospects enter the draft after Year 1 or Year 2 he stayed until his senior year.
Why he makes sense for the Magic: Scott Machado is a good gamble with the Magic's second pick if they don't decide to address our weakness at the backup, and or starting, PG position. He's a natural point guard and there's no question about him being able to consistenly find his teammates unlike Wroten or any other combo guard available in the draft. In his 4 years, he has grown quite a lot from dropping 13 pounds or from taking the advice to heart from his coach's comment about becoming more of a shooting threat knocking down 40% of 3s his senior year. Iona is known for their high tempo playing style and with Davis projected to remain as the backup C, our second unit will no longer leave the fans bored as Duhon will be able to continue his outstanding sideline dance routines as Machado alongside Davis, and Liggins, who I suspect to have a breakout year, continue to develop.
Why he doesn't make sense for the Magic:
His size and mediocre lateral quickness makes him a easy game-day target as quicker PGs such as Rose, Westbrook, or R. Rondo. His defense is also mediocre as he is shown to be easily beaten off the dribble numerous times; he is also vulnerable defending in isolation. Machado has played well but he has played in the MAAC.
Feel free to use this as discussion:
Does his court vision outweighs his physical limitations?
What current NBA player does Machado reminds you of? Rondo? CP3? Duhon?
Interesting Notes of the FanPost:
His birthday is June 08 so Happy Birthday, I guess.
His Agent is none other than Dan Fegan. That's right. Dan Fegan.
