Is Dwight to Blame? No. He fulfilled his commitment and per the CBA would have been free to pursue free agency at the end of this season. I definitely was turned off by his "romancing" other teams publicly, but he did play hard while he was here. Per reports I believe management came to him on their knees and asked him what they could do to appease him. So the choice was for him to want to keep a coach that pushed him hard to become a dominant defensive force, or pick his own coach that would let him be flashy. hmmm, I guess most youth would have made the decision he made.
Was it Stan's fault. No. Management punked him by offering him up as a sacrifice to appease Dwight. He did what any real man would have done and called bulls***.
Was it Otis' fault? As much as I detest Otis' mismanagement of the team, here are points to consider. Apparently the moves to get Arenas, re-sign J-Rich, and bring in Big Baby were not by Otis choosing, rather they were made to assuage Dwight. I guess Dwight's mini foray in GM status was not really great. Otis also did not appoint himself as GM, though he was clearly unqualified.
Which brings me to the ultimate culprit. Who hired Otis? Was it just because he played for the Magic? Now they are considering Adonal Foyle. AD is a great locker room guy and apparently a philanthropist, nice guy and very smart. But what qualifies him to be the next Magic GM other than the fact that he played for the Magic? What about Weisbrod? He knew hockey, but not squat about basketball. His most brilliant statement was that he wanted Steve Francis because he saw him fight and thought he'd be a great addition. WTH was it for the basketball team or the hockey team??? What about VDW? What made ownership think he could manage to get out of bed, much less manage a team. Our ownership has brought in CEO's and GM's just because they were family members or had history with the team. What we've needed all along was management that could build a team and a winning culture. DeVos has failed miserably at both..
Some will say that DeVos can run the team anyway he wants because it's his team. The problem with that is there is public money that has been infused for the Amway Arena, and the team also represents the community to the world. Right now Mickey Mouse looks more professional than the Magic organization, and that makes me, a day one Magic fan, sad. Especially considering that we will probably lose Dwight and Stan after this season.
