First Post
I've been following this site ever since the craziness that was the beginning of free agency and it has served as a great source of insight and camaraderie amongst a community of passionate and knowledgeable fans. I look forward to posting and sharing thoughts with everyone but I have one complaint and it's something that ties together seemingly every thread I read: pessimism. We have to be the most pessimistic fan-base of a consistently quality team I've ever observed. I'm optimistic that if moving the ball, playing defense and with SVG and Dwight here, this team can compete for a title. And if they make the ECF or better, does Dwight really have the moxie to walk away and basically actualize the scorn of a Lebron like fall from popularity? We shall see. Is this perhaps idealistic? Sure. Is it outside the realm of possibility? I have no reason to think so. Sorry for being decidedly long-winded; I've been reading and following religiously before creating an account recently and had some stuff pent up. I'll keep my posts more succinct from here forward. Go Magic!

No, we're not a bad team.
But we’re not a championship contender either. This team’s ceiling is probably the 2nd round, unless you feel truly confident enough in our PG and bench play that you think we could beat Miami or Chicago in a 7 game series. Heck, even the Hawks are a challenge to this team, as presently built.
We’re all strong Magic fans, but a lot of us are also realistic instead of blindly rah-rah. We do love this team, or we wouldn’t be using our free time on this site, digging up advanced statistics and generally trying to sound more intelligent than Bleacher Report or Real GM or the Orlando Sentinel comments section. But the reality remains that our management is painfully incompetent, and the talent level just isn’t quite where it needs to be. And because of the aforementioned incompetent management, the near future doesn’t look great, either, with all our aging players on extended contracts and little salary cap flexibility.
Thanks for posting though, and I hope you stick around and post more.
I like to watch.

I think the pessimism stems from being on the cusp
and then falling back due to the failed trades of last December. Also, our best player is trying to force himself out. I’m probably more optimistic than most though. I’ve seen how so many teams of late have won the championship on the backs of players most fans consider past their prime. Players seem to know how to win better as they get older and are also more hungry. So I think we can contend as presently constructed, but it would take so many things coming together at the right time. Basically the opposite of what we saw last year. As MTC stated, our most reasonable ceiling is likely 2nd round, but if we managed to get hot for the playoffs and got good ball handling/creation from the PG’s and Hedo I feel we could beat anyone. It’s what makes this season exciting for me as I kind of enjoy being the team that is overlooked, but has a chance. However, I have the feeling that much could change in the next month.
Welcome, this is a great site for reading about the Magic and interjecting your ideas. The game threads are always fun.

Pessimism. A highly deserved trip to the finals might do that to a fan base.
The moment the mentality of the team changed from, let’s make it to the playoffs to championship or bust, it’s clear than the fan base gained new and high expectetions. That fact + the fact that management didn’t do anything to sustain the championship part in favor of the bust part + some periods of really bad basketball from the team the last two years = lost optimism. I feel from time to time that Magic fans are a bit spoiled and negative (especialy when they overcriticize Stan) but overall it’s understandable that they don’t really see their basketball life “en rose” right now.
Don't mind my spelling. I'm a Typo Master.
It *can* compete for a championship
If everything goes well.
Will it? Probably not. Will it win one? Pretty unlikely.
How about this perspective...
Is there a monumental difference between the DNA of this roster and that of Dallas last year? One top 10 player and a bunch of shooters with an aging PG and a completely unproven commodity in Bareja. And that’s a team that made LA look silly and took it to the mighty Heat. Basketball is not nearly as formulaic as people suggest and there is merit to the truism that the team that gets hot in the postseason can beat seemingly superior teams. And I’m not wavering from my stance that this team is capable of that and that stance shouldn’t be ignored as blind optimism. 3rd in the East at the moment and tending upward and I’m sorry to say but until Miami displays that they can move the ball and run efficient offensive sets in the half court, I won’t consider them insurmountable as it’s not terribly difficult to adjust to ISOs and fast break basketball. Basically until they get a competent coach. Chicago will be the true challenge this year. This is all moot of course if Otis deals Dwight but I’m assuming if the team goes 3-1 or 4-0 on this 4-game road trip, it will be hard to deal him.

Baby will have to shape up his game.
Nelson will have to play at his ceiling all the way through the playoffs.
Otherwise, not enough horses in the stable.
"...sometimes your eyes lie to you..." ~SVG | I'm on Twitter
One of those is correct.
Baby will have to play substantially better and be that thorn in the side he always was against us. I don’t think Nelson will be required to play at his peak the entire post-season, just as long as Turk picks up his slack in the games he struggles in. If one of those 2 has it going, Ryan and Dwight keep up there great play, and J-Rich can bring a consistent scoring punch, this team can go deep. You underestimate the value of having 2 competent facilitators as not a bunch of starting lineups have that.
Thanks for posting! Welcome!
I think that each SBN site seems to have its own vibe. OPP does seem to me to be a little more negative than most, but it also seems to have some of the most thoughtful posters out there-as well as having a fantastic staff in Evan and Mike. I can see where the negative vibe occasionally goes overboard, but numbers outlined some of the rationale for that above.
I guess what I am saying is, yes, the site could stand to cheer up a little, but I still prefer it to a kind-of rose-colored glasses approach to the game (netsdaily or the like).
Thanks so much for posting, and joining the community. Here’s hoping you stick around.

I think the posters here
Have a pretty good grasp on the reality of the NBA. The Magic aren’t a title favourite, but they’re a team with the potential to go far if things work out. There’s nothing wrong with being grounded.

We could go a long way with low pressure on us.
Although having Dwight possibly walking will add some pressure, imagine the pressure on Miami if they’re in a tough matchup come playoffs. I think the Heat are incredibly fragile under heavy pressure it just happens that pressure doesn’t really happen in the regular season.
It is more realism than pessimism
Every true fan has to be realistic about this team. I believe we Could when a champion ship not that we will. We are such a roller coaster this year, we can be unstoppable one night, and beat down the next. Except for the early part of the season, we have not exhibited true dominance. I would love to see us win it all, but we have to be realistic about it.

Realism...
is good, pessimism is annoying and not productive. I’m well aware Orlando is not the odds-on favorite to win the championship but neither was Dallas. To dismiss their chances completely is absurd in my opinion, considering they have the 5th best record in the NBA currently. That’s all I’m trying to say.
Optimist: The glass is half-full.
Pessimist: The glass is half-empty.
Realist: Either way, that glass is twice as large as it needs to be.
Nets-fan: Hey, this glass is full of kool-aid! We’re getting Dwight Howard!

Let's hope they don't snip their genitalia in preparation of the Hale-Bopp comet coming through
If the Magic must trade Dwight, Hedo better stay. He needs to retire a Magic.
