Jeremy Lin to the Magic?

The thing that I have yet to hear mentioned through these early stages of Linsanity is that he is currently playing on a league minimum contract with no guarantee for next season.

If he keeps up his play, and the situation isn't exactly prime when Melo comes back, it seems likely that Lin could play elsewhere next season. It's too early to start discussing how much money he'll command, or what the Magic's roster/payroll will look like by the end of this season.

But unless things work out swimmingly in New York when Melo returns, Lin could be up for grabs at the end of this season.

And whether or not Dwight stays home, the Magic should do whatever they can to bring Lin aboard.

He's a good player, with a great story in a massive media market.

Anyone seen his turnover stats? It’s above 5 a game.

He’s a guy who’s a perfect fit for D’Antoni’s system, not too sure if he’ll be as big of a success anywhere else.

I keep saying the exact same thing!

…and my friends call me a hater. Last 4 games he’s had 6, 6, 8 and 6 in the turnover column.

He’s riding an incredible and impressive hot hand right now, but he’s still unproven. To say ANY team should do “whatever they can” to get Lin is extremely premature.

I think D'Antoni's system is part of the reason his turnovers are so high.

That, and inexperience. But I think his ball handling and decision making will improve.

He may benefit from the system, but you really can’t deny his ability. He is not a system quarterback. He’s quick, he makes plays and he can score, not to mention he hits some clutch shots.

Kobe Bryant says he’s as good as advertised. I’m inclined to agree with him.

He has the ball 80% of the time for New York

Do you really not expect 8 TO’s??? Jeremy Lin is a very good player. You don’t just drop 20+ and 8 assists out of nowhere. He would be great anywhere and everywhere.

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

“……….ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha” – the New York Knicks

There’s no way they let him walk.

I like to watch.

It really doesn't seem likely to me

He’s a restricted free agent next season, so the Knicks hanging on to him is nearly assured.

by Tim333 on Feb 17, 2012 1:24 PM EST reply actions

Actually, I think they are limited to only offer up to the midlevel exception, so if another team offers more, the Knicks wouldn't be able to match

It has something to do with Lin not having true bird rights due to either only being on a two year contract or being picked up by waivers. Admittedly, I only glance through the article that explained it so I’m not entirely sure why.

If the Magic must trade Dwight, Hedo better stay. He needs to retire a Magic.

Other teams cannot offer more than the Knicks can afford.

Hit up google, somebody covered this in the last two days.

Correct

Quite a few people, actually.

Does mean they’re essentially going to have to choose between Lin and Nash, though.

by eltharion_doa on Feb 19, 2012 1:36 AM EST up reply actions

He is still a restricted free agent.

Some team can offer him a mega contract and the Knicks will match. They make a buck or two every now and then to afford their players.

They don't own his bird's rights though due to his being picked up on waivers and on a 2 year contract, plus the Knicks are over the cap

My original thinking on my comment was I remember when Arenas was a second round pick and with the Warriors for only two years. Washington signed him to a ten million dollar contract and GS could only match up to the midlevel because they were over the cap.

Apparently since then, the NBA made a rule that prevents that scenario from happening again (it is called the Arenas Rule). Anyway, I was wrong because no team can sign Lin to a lucrative contract above the midlevel apparently unless the Knicks renounce their rights to him (which strikes me as unfair to Lin but oh well).

At least, that is my understanding from what I’ve read since then.

If the Magic must trade Dwight, Hedo better stay. He needs to retire a Magic.

Yep

Lin can sign an offer sheet which can be 1) at least three years and 2) at most the MLE, or he can resign with the Knicks for 2-4 years for at most the MLE (he could sign a 1 year deal with the Knicks, but they won’t offer him that.

Pretty sure

that the Knicks would keep the most popular player in the sport right now. What could they possibly gain from trading him?

Not talking about a trade. Lin is a free agent.

I’d read somewhere he was unrestricted, but now it appears I’m mistaken about this. Either way, the Knicks don’t exactly have a lot of cap space.

if things don't go well when Anthony returns

I actually think it’s more likely Anthony is moved… what do you guys think about this trade proposed by Bill Simmons:

“[Knicks] could package Chandler and Melo for Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu’s contract in about three seconds”

I am intrigued. Or is it Lintrigued?

by pcnyc on Feb 17, 2012 3:07 PM EST reply actions

I have a feeling Melo will be moved.

In my season on NBA2K12 the Knicks traded him back to Denver lol.

A pissed off 'Melo

With a solid supporting cast, a good defender inside, a PG who likes to run the PnR but doesn’t need to dominate the ball, and a sharpshooting, versatile bench.

As compensation for Dwight leaving goes…

He's not going anywhere

He’s a restricted Free Agent this season. Knicks can match any offer (and will).

Only way he would come here would be in a package with Melo , and then the answer is why would the Knicks make that trade. They’d have Amare & Dwight surrounded by scrubs.

by DraftPhantom on Feb 17, 2012 9:49 PM EST reply actions

If he leaves the Knicks

It will be because someone massively overpaid him, and the Magic don’t have the cap flexibility to massively overpay him.

So no, he won’t come to the Magic unless the Knicks, and the 10 or so teams with solid cap space, all collectively have a summer brain explosion.

by eltharion_doa on Feb 18, 2012 9:33 PM EST reply actions

I don't see the Knicks letting him go.

The money they’re making off this guy is ridiculous. People are going crazy just trying to get tickets to see him, forget Stat and Melo, people are trying to get tickets to see Jeremy Lin.

Also bear in mind the crazy following he has in Taiwan and China. I think I remember reading one Chinese article with my girlfriend, trying to claim he was from Zheijang. This absolutely ridiculous.

Everyone is trying to bank on this guys success. No way they let him go to another team willing to offer the same mid level exception they can easily match.
