The More I watch the Less I'm Impressed (coaches that is, not, Jeremy Lin)

I've been watching a lot about Jeremy Lin, and if you follow the NBA, so have you. The last guy on the bench becomes unbelievable. Sustainable? I think so. He's been through quite a bit-yes Harvard can be pretty cut-throat, and he was cut by TWO teams in December. It's got me thinking: might the Magic have a guy like this around? How do we know? How does SVG know? How can anybody know?

Recall:

Dick Vermeil was crying like a baby, "This team will rally around Kurt Warner," after Trent Green went down with a blown knee. Kurt Warner is probably Hall of Fame (HoF) material.

Bledsoe goes down and some 5th or 6th rounder (Tom Brady) is left to try and keep things in Beantown respectable. Definite HoF.

Wally Pip has a headache, and Lou Gehrig plays for about 14 years w/o a break. All Universe team.

Lagerette Blount at Tampa Bay Bucs, "Take Okefor" before Dwight Howard. Ryan Leaf-can't miss. Kevin Love. Darko. Terry Bradshaw. Madonna, U2, ...

My point is: you never really know what you've got until you've given it a chance. Everybody should get a chance.

I assume this story is about Von Wafer

I probably know Judo! How many of you can make the same boast?

I think Ish Smith would be more comparable.

but Wafer and the rooks should get more looks when the rest of the bench is playing poorly as well.

by INTOTHEMEATGRINDER on Feb 15, 2012 10:05 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with that statement

I just don’t get the people that complain constantly about the rookies and Wafer not getting playing time when everyone is playing great. If people are having off nights and we need to find a spark, I’m all for it, but when the starters and regular bench rotation guys are playing good I just don’t understand why people are calling for them to get on the court.

Please leave a message, I'm busy hiding my cat from TGS.

You are talking about the exceptions not the norms.

Generally, coaches see what players are capable of in practice in terms of their talent and physical abilities. What they cannot gauge is the physical and mental toughness which players possess except when they are put in tough game-time situations.

Learning is not compulsory, but have you learned anything today?

I agree

van gundy will never let new guys play. wafer ,smith, Clark, liggins, and the list goes on and on. he doesn’t like change. He has his core guys and he will not change unless he dies.

by necksnappa on Feb 16, 2012 2:32 AM EST reply actions

Yeah,

Clark didn’t play 15 and 9 minutes in the past two games, nope.

I like to watch.

by MoveThoseChains on Feb 16, 2012 8:52 AM EST up reply actions

I agree too

Is it possible that Liggins or Harper are not good enough to play some minutes in this league???
Ok, maybe right now they aren’t ready, but if you give them some chances, they will improve their skills and become good rotation player.

by MagicLight on Feb 16, 2012 2:44 AM EST reply actions

You improve in practice.

Until you look good in practice, you’re not going to look good in a real game situation. I don’t think Liggins, Harper, or Orton are ready for that right now.

I like to watch.

NBA games can be decided by one run .

I don’t want to be losing games just because ‘oh the rookies will get better by playing them’ rookies earn playing time by showing what they can do in practice and then earn more minutes by playing well in games. Playing well doesn’t mean he scored 10points off the bench or got 10 rebounds, its whether he played the role that the coach asked him to play. Look at Earl Clarke, earnt some minutes and with his good play in those minutes he’ll continue to get some more. You don’t get a free pass in professional sports because your a rookie.

Harper has game...he played a ton of college ball and already played some pro ball overseas

It’s just SVG, he doesn’t play new players in his systems. Big Baby played right away because we run a lot of the same defensive rotations as the Celtics do and he was able to grasp those quickly. So unless SVG really needs to play you due to lack of players at your postition (Ish Smith when we signed him) or if he knows your game already (Rafer Alston, Big Baby) you won’t play much as a first year player in a SVG system.

There's a few things here.

1.) As stated by a few people, these things mentioned are extreme exceptions to the norm. Why do you think they’re so memorable?

2.) Most of the players you mentioned got their chance when someone got hurt. If Drew Bledsoe doesn’t get hurt (and if the stupid Tuck Rule didn’t happen), is there ever a Tom Brady? Doubtful. When D-Wade was hurt and missed most of the season for Miami, who stepped up to be a legend? How about when Yao got hurt multiple times for Houston? I don’t see anyone talking about the Legend of Chuck Hayes. When Jameer and J-Rich were hurt, no one came in and did anything unbelievable. Ish Smith didn’t go for 20 and 10 dimes, Wafer didn’t go 9-11 from 3.

3.) It’s a condensed season. There is no practice time. This is an extremely important year, where we can’t afford for players to learn “on the fly”.

Did Stan not play Courtney Lee when he proved himself on the court? Did he not give JJ more burn as he earned it? Did he not give Ryan Anderson ample burn even though he was a really young player on a new team (which he gave over the more established player, Bass)? I think Wafer can be a contributor to a bench on some nights, but he’s not Monta Ellis or even JR Smith. Ish Smith did not set the world on fire in his few appearances. Maybe they’ll develop further with more workout time and when we can actually have practice. But now is not the time.

The article lacks logic, big time.

We cannot throw players who are not ready unto the court, especially in an abbreviated season when wins and losses are even more magnified. NBA is basically a league of 8-9-man rotation teams unless necessities dictate otherwise.

For some reason, the book "How we know what isn't so" and the website "youarenotsosmart.com" come to mind . . .

First time post...

But we have that player in Anderson. No one expected his season to play out this way, after all the majority of the fans I’ve talked to expected him to be traded, not Bass. While I would like to see Harper play more minutes, why would we play him over Anderson when he is having an outstanding year?

Right about now David Stern has a Jeremy Lin jersey on.

I think he’s more happy about this than NY fans. And I certainly mean nothing bad about Lin by saying this. That guy is just amazing taking the team on his back like that. I’m sure that he won’t stop to boggle our minds for some time. Every NBA fan is looking to his team’s bench to find the next LIn but it won’t happen just like that. The kid is special.

Don't mind my spelling. I'm a Typo Master.
