OMG!!! A Trade Idea Post Not Involving Dwight Howard!!!
Yes people this here post is Superman free (sponsored by Lex Luthor).
Alot has gone well so far this season for the Magic. The team is winning despite the circus surrounding the organization and despite Otis Smith. #FireOtis!!!!
Of course not all is so peachy since this is a trade thread. This hastily written panic laden thread is based on the play of one Jameer Nelson. He has just been well... in a word... awful this year. I dont know if its his conditioning post lockout or his emotions but he is not getting it done this year.
I dont want him traded since I still think he's a good player and can play a key role for this team. Ideally I would like to use him as a no conscience scoring guard off the bench ala Jason Terry, Jamal Crawford, Lou Williams or Nate Robinson. This would work in his favor since his low assist numbers wont matter as much since he'll be the #1 option with the 2nd unit. Plus there is the added benefit of him going up against 2nd team PG's.
So whose the guy that's gonna replace Jameer as the starter?
I like Cleveland Cavaliers backup PG Ramon Sessions as the guy. Sessions has been a starting PG in this league before with decent results. The key stat I like about Ramon is his adjusted assists per game which is 10.6. Of which I think he could do even better on this team since he will have better shooters on this team than he's ever played with. He is a bit unpredictable from 3 point land but he makes up for that with playmaking (assists!!)
Right now he's backing up #1 overall pick Kyrie Erving averaging 21 MPG this year. He is scoring 9 ppg and dishing 4.8 apg. He is also only 25 years old. Four years younger than our existing PG. YOUTH!!!! So now its on to what I think it would take to land him. Sessions is making a tidy sum of 4.25 million this year a with a player option of 4.5 next year. This is a slight problem for the Magic. I see 2 feasible ways of going about this.
Option #1 Ramon Session (4.25) + Ryan Hollins (2.48) for Jason Richardson (5.4) + Daniel Orton (1.1) plus picks?
Option #2 Ramon Session (4.25) for Chris Duhon (3.5) + Earl Clark (1.2) plus picks?

I can't believe there are so many yes responses.
I agree that we need a new PG, but I don’t think sessions is an answer. I think we need to try anything we can to get Kyle Lowry from Houston.
He’s averaging 17.3- with 8.6 assists and 6.6 rebounds. He’s also shooting 41.7 percent from three this season.
How about this?

Nelson-Redick-Orton-Picks for
Lowry-Lee-and the horrible contract of Thabeet.
Depth Chart:
Lowry/Duhon/Hughes
Richardson/Lee/Liggins
Turk/Clark
Anderson/Davis/Harper
Howard/Thabeet/Davis
Short of throwing in Anderson (who I’m now guessing is untouchable minus a superstar in return— what else would we have to throw in to make this work?

Lowry isn't going anywhere. They love him in Houston.

Exactly, they let Brooks go because they like Lowry so much

jonny flynn and courtney lee for chris duhon, qrich and otis smith

Sessions is a solid option.
The problem with dealing for a PG in a deal that doesn’t send Jameer back to the other team is chemistry. How will Jameer respond to being benched? How would the team respond to one of their co-captains having the starting job taken from him and handed to a new guy? These are issues that we as fans would like to imagine aren’t a problem, but they are definitely things you have to think about as a GM.
He should respond as Q: Just shut up and watch how your teammates win games.
If he is not willing to do it then he is not a team player and I dont want him in my team.
On the court, probably not.
Off the court? Well that depends on what you think his current mental state is. If you think he’s already broken because of the stuff Dwight has allegedly said to confidants of his, then it probably can’t. But if you think his poor play is due to anything actually basketball related, I think it could get way worse in the locker room. That is why I think he needs to be apart of any deal involving a trade that brings in a PG to replace him in the starting lineup.

Very astute.
I think Sessions is a good alternative.
But the point about Jameer is a good one.
Last season the Magic traded for a multiple time all-star max contract PG averaging 17 & 7. And he couldn’t get on the court.
Gilbert Arenas isn’t good, but, if Gilbert Arenas (who you traded Rashard Lewis for) is a backup to Nelson in SVG’s eyes then Ramon Sessions is a backup for sure.

Well, Gil wasn't the 17 & 7 guy though.
Not that I think Sessions is such an incredible upgrade, but without looking at the numbers yet, I think his athleticism would be an added benefit. When Jameer was more athletic (before the shoulder/knee injuries) he was an All-Star. Now? Well, we’re thinking about how dealing him for Sessions is a good idea.
Gil was averaging 17ppg 5.6 apg 3.3 rpg 1.4 spg
So, it was more like 17 & 6.
But still. He was playing decent basketball before the Magic traded for him.

Per-36 minutes the season Gil was traded
With Washington: 18.0 points, 5.8 assists, 1.5 steals, 0.6 blocks
With Orlando: 13.2 points, 5.3 assists, 1.5 steals, 0.3 blocks
For comparison, Nelson was 15.5 points, 7.1 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0 blocks
So yes, Nelson was statistically better than Arenas
Bob.

You'd have to sit him down and explain the role that you want him to play
Jason Terry is not a starter in Dallas but he is still one of their best players. Surely he can see that this move will benefit him

Hopefully he could.
A lot of guys can’t though. And hasn’t that really been Jason Terry’s role his whole career? Also, sitting behind a guy like Jason Kidd probably makes that transition a little easier.
I just realized Otis Smith chose Chris Duhon over Ramon Sessions 2 years ago in free agency... God I hate this GM

I'd be inclined to take quite a few non-all star pg's, including Sessions, for a package built around any of the players you named.
I like the idea of keeping Jameer in a veteran/bench scoring/leadership role. Between J.J., Ryan, and Turk, the current weak link is Jameer. It seems Otis was unprepared for Jameer’s drop off.
Looking at the numbers
I am not huge on the idea of swapping Sessions for Nelson (as I was thinking), mainly because looking at Sessions basic stats, he isn’t shooting the ball well from the floor and his assist numbers aren’t better than Nelson’s. Only way I would do this is if Cleveland wanted to give us a pick for some reason, which they wouldn’t. There needs to be a 3rd team involved here, I think.
Read it again.. I'm not giving Nelson away
I want his role changed and for us to get younger at the position

i think with the play off wafer
we can afford to lose Jameer and Clark for a good PG, get off the trade J-rich thing, his last three games before the injury he has been tremendous and thats without his shot fallin, he is big enough to guard opposing 2 and 3. the Hawks got Mcgrady and Joe Johnson and have been a nightmere to guard because of theor size, Jrich is layin out on the court and I think we have to take pride in the fact he wanted to stay in Orlando even with the bulls wanting him. I gurantee u if he went to the Bulls we would be hatin him for leaving.

That may be so but right now we have better SG depth than PG. This has been made especially clear the way jameer has been playing

This might not be terrible.
Three team deal – Indiana – Cleveland
Orlando receives: Sessions (CLE) AJ Price (IN) Semih Erden (CLE)
Cleveland receives: Duhon (ORL) Luis Amundson (IN) Daniel Orton (ORL)
Indiana receives: Nelson (ORL)
Orlando: The main thing here is basically swapping Nelson for Sessions, but we get to shed Duhon’s salary, and pick up a backup center who has at least logged minutes in the NBA to be able to give Dwight a breather now and again. Both Erden and Price are expiring deals, and Sessions is the same length, but is owed half as much.
Cleveland: They get an experienced backup PG in Duhon who can teach Kyrie Irving, as well as swap Erden for a better center who is also in an expiring deal, and a nice prospect in Orton. Cleveland may need a 2nd rounder, but sure, whatever.
Indiana: Jameer Nelson for AJ Price and Luis Amundson? Easy decision. Bolsters their PG rotation even more, George Hill can be used as either trade bait or log more minutes at SG. Amundson wasn’t playing behind Hansbrough and David West.
The team who potentially makes out the worst in this deal is us, so that’s never fun. I am not sure I’d do this deal, but I really have no idea what Nelson’s value is right now. Can’t be that high.
Tough for a point guard to come in mid season and take over a team - this is an offseason move not right now for a team playing well.
Only reason you move your starting PG and team co-captain mid season is for a no brainer upgrade. There is only one scenario at this moment that has any remote possibility of happening:
• Steve Nash – if Phoenix sucks near trade deadline – they might trade him if they think he is going to explore his options in summer free agency.
Agreed.
Jameer has definitely been up and down this year (more down at this point), but he’s a team captain for a reason. If you’re going to get rid of him mid-season, you’d better have a good reason with a much larger upside than down.
I'm torn. Is JJ Redick the White Mamba or the White Ray Allen?
Ughh... Jeffshaun has highjacked my post
Not once in my post did I say we were getting rid of Nelson

Lol
I think we all are well aware what your post says. Just because we are exploring a different avenue of your topic doesn’t mean I am “hijacking” anything. I was simply throwing out an idea, one that Im not even sold on.
