Jason Richardson's injury (the flip side of the coin)
Magic veteran shooting guard Jason Richardson sprained his left knee in the third quarter and hobbled off the court and to the locker room.Richardson had just scooped up a loose ball and as he was trying to spin and get the ball ahead to a streaking Turkoglu, Richardson began grabbing at his knee...
Richardson will have a MRI today. ``I thought I bumped knees, but I didn't have that pain and soreness,'' Richardson said. ``It was more that I couldn't push off. I've never had this. It kind of does (worry him), but I'm a positive person, so hopefully I'll just get some rest and it's nothing serious.''
The flip side of this setback is that it looks like we will get a good look at JJ Redick in the starting role. This test won't give a clear picture because he won't be facing any elite scorers in next week's scheduled "back to back to back". Redick will match up with Landry Fields (NY) on Monday, Gerald Henderson (CHA) on Tuesday and because Ginoblii is hurt - he will face Gary Neal (SA) on Wednesday.
If Jason Richardson is still out, his biggest test will come on Friday against Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. Last night Ellis torched us. Even though he blurs past everyone, Monte had a pretty resistance free path to the Magic interior defense all night.
Richardson injury will also give Van Gundy a much closer look at Von Wafer. Given Von Wafer's speed and size he seems to have the physical tools to be a competent defender. Though he has yet play in consistent minutes, his defense thus far has not stood out as horrible. Hopefully SVG can, as he has in others, develop that talent out of Von Wafer's natural physical gifts.

Well said
but actually, I think Wafer should start. Not because he’s better, but I think he could handle some starting SGs and “should” be a low usage player. He sometimes gets a little too confident in his abilities and tries to do to much, but if he stays within the offense I think he has the potential to defend adquately.
Also, JJ is our best bench scorer and it helps to have his scoring when the starters are out. Maybe a Liggins appearance also?

If history is an indicator, SVG usually doesn't like to disrupt roles, so you might be right.
Van Gundy has often inserted the replacement player into the injured players role as opposed to promoting the back up.
Though in this case, I can’t see him passing up the opportunity to test JJ at starter with little risk of causing personnel issues. Statistics show JJ is right now a better starting option, but to demote JRich could be an ego blow that destabilizes the locker room dynamic. Now SVG has a legit excuse.
You can say "should" all you want...
…but do you see how Wafer actually plays? He’s a LITTLE more likely to pass than Brandon Bass was, but I wouldn’t say he’s out of (for example) Pietrus territory.
To his credit, he’s been making a lot of those shots so far, but there’s years of evidence suggesting he is (um) NOT a 55% shooter.
It's on like Gregg Zaun!
I like Wafer and while his defense has not been obviously horrible, SVG has some issues
Last night there were several plays where it was clear that Wafer did the wrong (perhaps even opposite thing) that Van Gundy wanted on the floor. He probably had more direct notes about defensive mistakes coming off the floor from SVG and Dwight than any other individual player last night.
I'm torn. Is JJ Redick the White Mamba or the White Ray Allen?
To me, that is to be expected from a player who is just now seeing meaningful time in live action.
That after only a short camp and only 2 pre-season games. Just look at how Davis had to figure everything out. Game play is the best teacher.

Well for one,
it’s not like he see’s a dominant wing player in practice everyday, so the only way he’s gonna understand that kind of speed coming at him is in game situations.

I’m feeling the angle where we get to see more of JJ in a starting role. The great thing about Redick is that our ball movement immediately get’s better with him on the floor (Not that JRich is all that bad at this). But it might help our offense if there’s more focus on ball movement to start the games.
I’m not really feeling Von Wafer yet. You can tell he’s out of sorts on the court and still trying to find his way into the system. He’s long and athletic, but he’s certainly not a player who’s man-to-man D jumps out at you either.
Wafer has a reputation as a very poor defender.
Though there’s been some evidence that his D was better with Boston last year. And you know how “reputation” is. But looking at him, I definitely see a guy who (if nothing else) hasn’t grasped the rotations yet.
It's on like Gregg Zaun!
The MRI reveals only a bone bruise, no structural damage
He’s being listed as day to day.

Great news!

John Wall missed 2 weeks last season with a bone bruise to the knee
Also forgot about Q Rich but Magic should have him back after Monday
• (Updated 01/12/2012) Injury Report: Q-Rich likely out until Monday. Magic forward Quentin Richardson, out with a sprained left ankle, could return on Monday when the Magic visits the Knicks. Richardson, averaging 2.3 points and 2.0 rebounds a game, has missed three games. He is doubtful for Thursday at Golden State.
• (Updated – 1/13/12 ) Injury Report: Ankle – Questionable for Jan. 16 at New York
Luckily, for the upcoming 3 games, we won’t have to deal with a high scoring SG.

Yeah, but
we still see ‘Melo, which it would be nice to have Q, if for nothing else but the intensity he brings to the defense. He knows how to get under the superstars’ skins.

Orlando Sentinel: Magic SG Jason Richardson (knee) said Sunday he "probably will not play" against Knicks in N.Y. in MLK matinee
I'm thinking we should start Q instead of Redick. He can guard 'Melo while Turk watches their 2nd tier SG

If Carmelo even plays. He's a game-time decision for the game

True. Boy would that be a break!
I don’t care what anyone on ESPN, TNT, or NBA network says, I’ll take 4-0 anyway I can get it!
