Simmons/Abrams on Orlando's Amnesty
Abrams: Pick one — Gilbert Arenas ($62.4 million through 2014) or Hedo Turkoglu ($34.5 million through 2014). Both have underperformed (and then some), but Otis Smith has a longstanding relationship with Arenas that dates back to their days together in Oakland. My take: They need to shed Arenas to give Dwight Howard extra help.
Simmons: Agreed — has to be Arenas. Although it's a shame Hedo is going to escape Amnesty 2.0's wrath; few deserve the indignity more than him. Lemme throw this idea at you: What if the Magic amnesty'd Arenas, then traded Hedo and J.J. Redick to Atlanta for Joe Johnson? That's the best possible teammate out there for Dwight Howard; meanwhile, Atlanta could use the clause on Hedo (wiping $11.1 million off their 2012 cap) and turn Johnson ($107.3 million remaining through 2016) into Redick ($12.9 million through 2013) while dropping their 2012 cap from $66.56 to $55.3 million. I'm a genius. How am I not running a team, Abrams?

Joe Johnson is a number two.
He still is really good despite what people say. It would alleviate pressure off of Jameer as well. It gives Orlando that “dynamic” wing player they have lacked since the Tracy McGrady days. However the age of Johnson would concern me. Also would it be a Vince Carter 2.0 story where he does not fit. Although the Jameer/Johnson back court would be interesting.
Agree with them that Gilbert Arenas would have to be the one that would be amnestied.
Roll Bass and War Ryno for me
I'll tell you why you're not running a team, Simmons.
The Magic already discovered in December 2010 that it’s not the best idea to replace a smaller/shorter awful contract with a huge awful contract, along with giving away a promising younger player on a reasonable contract as an extra self nut punch. Simmons’ new idea just replaces VC with Hedo, Hedo with Joe Johnson, and Gortat with Redick.
Congratulations, Bill, you just turned into 3 years and $34.2 million into 5 years and $107.3 million, while also taking away a marginal starter/great backup SG with an ok contract. Actually, you probably could run a team, since Otis still somehow has a job.
I like to watch.

If you can use the clause on a traded player then Arenas is an asset.
Not every team owes 60M to a single player, so if they want to take 60M out of their books they would trade for a big contract . Then you cut Hedo and trade Arenas for an Allstar plus a bad smaller contract. Like Arenas + Ardenson/Reddick for CP3, Okafor + rubbish players. Orlando gets a better bad contract and an allstar, while New Orleans payroll gets so small it can finally be sold. (I am not saying this is likely to happen, it is just an example). Best part of the deal for Otis: if Arenas is cutted by another team, he can sing with Orlando! lol
