Notes on Orlando Pinstriped Post Improvements (Please Read and "Rec")

I've done some long-overdue housekeeping here at Orlando Pinstriped Post. Here are some changes I've made:

  • Revised, and made more prominent, the site's Community Guidelines:
This addition is the most important. This vital document is list of behaviors, both encouraged and discouraged, and serves as a guide for this community. Please read the guidelines, and do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns; my email address is in the document.

  • Updated the blogroll:
For example, nine months after the Magic traded Vince Carter, links to his website and Twitter account no longer appear under "Official Magic Player Sites" in the blogroll.

  • Removed excess from the sidebar:
Now only the essentials are there.

You'll notice a change on the Orlando Pinstriped Post Facebook page as well. Indeed, links to OPP stories won't simply pop up there automatically and impersonally like an RSS feed anymore. I aim to make the Facebook page an extension of the site, not a ditto of it.

These improvements are part of a larger project which will, I hope, make OPP a more vibrant and active community. There are newer, bigger changes to come, about which you'll hear more soon.

Many thanks for your continued readership and support. With any luck, this silly lockout will end fairly soon, and we'll have topics more fun to discuss than the site itself.

This FanPost was made by a member of the Orlando Pinstriped Post community, and is to be treated as the opinions and views of its author, not that of the blogger or blog community as a whole.

looking forward

One of the major problems in the past was the experts questioning the IQ or legal parents for one’s opinion. I have limited my comments and reading the OPP because of all the personal attacks on the majority of contributors. I’m looking forward to the changes this year and hope that you can maintain the kind of conduct that all can enjoy. The changes were needed and Good Luck…….

Everyone make liberal use of the “GOOD” example. Especially the “…because [Reason Y]” part.

Making personal attacks. Articulate your arguments without starting a flamewar. For example:
GOOD: “I disagree with your assessment of [Player X] because [Reason Y].”
BAD: “You’re wrong about [Player X], you idiot, and if you’d watched the games, you’d know that.”

btw, love that the community guidelines long URL is still “http://www.orlandopinstripedpost.com/pages/third-quarter-collapse-community”

Ah, “3QC” nostalgia. :)

"Liberal use of good example" is the appropriate framework for what goes on here.

People who try to fill in “[reason Y]” part could go any of the two following routes:

1 – Claim – and prove – expertise, in which case they could assert their opinion and provide no evidence or proof (e.g., I am the expert and this is how I see it … don’t ask me why).
2 – Provide evidence or cite references for why they think the way they think.

Occasionally, people who don’t qualify for Item #1 take the liberty of providing no supporting material, and when challenged, turn defiant, or even nasty. Such situations deserve to be totally ignored, but some of us – especially teachers – cannot pass on “teaching moments”, hence unintentionally get pulled in never-ending vicious circles.

The question which deserves a careful answer is what should one do when insulted? Flag it as “inappropriate” and move on? That seems to be the best approach which in the long run should pay off. For example:

a) When I was accused of racial bias, and flagged it as inappropriate, it was taken care of right away;
b) Other types of personal attacks seem to have no immediate effect but were aggregated leading to some resolution. It is my personal opinion that, in the interest of maintaining a high quality blog, all direct personal attacks ought to be dealt with by issuing a warning, which when accumulated lead to predefined reprimands.

On the contrary, I am usually the life of parties.

But I have learnt long time ago not to engage – or get pulled – in serious debates on politics, religion, social issues or politically-charged economics. Internet frees me from many – although not all – self-imposed restrictions.

are you incapable of dropping a subject? Seriously, dude, let it go. Sheesh.

WHAT?

Good grief, I give up. You’re right, I’m a horrible person for realizing that an Orlando Magic website isn’t the best place to engage in political discussions and regretted bringing it up in the first place in the other thread and then in an effort to let the subject drop posted a stupid animated .gif to try to bring some humor into the situation and hoped that you would see the olive branch for what it was. I agree, that WAS very stupid of me.

God knows I can be “insufferable” about a lot of topics on this site but at least I’m trying to fight against sexism and homophobia and racism. You’re fighting for corporations and Wall Street and multi-billionaires. THAT’S why no one likes to engage in discussion with you!

You are right, but let's look at how did it start on this thread.

I had a serious suggestion posted which was responded to by ‘Cats" gif … I hate cats and being compared with fighting cats was unbearable to me … but I tried to play along and find my way out of it with some humor … no use. What broke the camel’s back was " Check your thighs in the mirror" comment, slipped in towards the end. In case you are not familiar with the expression, checking thighs in the mirror is recommended for men when looking for signs of melanoma skin cancer … for women it’s typically arm and legs.

In the other thread I was honored with being called the following, amongst other honorable, titles:

1 – condescending twerp
2 – pompous dill-weed

All this coming from somebody whose basketball-related contribution to the blog is almost zero. At the request of some of the long-time blog members, I have been more than tolerable to this person, and am sorry that the conversation got to the point that I lost my cool and thought I had to somewhat respond to extreme nastiness. I don’t care about opinion disagreements, as I did close one conversation in the other thread with a positive note, but personal attacks have to stop.

by Matt1325 on Sep 25, 2011 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

1) The cats were the humor. Are you saying this whole thing was precipitated because your eyes happened to see cats and you lost it? If you are walking down the street and you see a cat in your peripheral vision, do you suddenly Hulk out and start yelling and smashing things, all rational thought replaced by frothing at the mouth…or frothing in your brain? Humor is how the entire world tries to diffuse tension and change the subject. I’m sorry that cats apparently cause a mental breakdown for you. Just relax.

2) Objectively speaking as someone who has had no problems with you on this site, you’re earning those titles through the way you speak. I also can speak as if I were a walking thesaurus, but I choose not to, because this is a site about sports, not a college dissertation.

3) The person you are referring to is great. You can’t question her love of the Magic and of basketball in general; she had entire conversations with herself about basketball once the Magic were eliminated. This site is for discussing basketball, of course, but it wouldn’t be any fun if we didn’t each have distinct personalities. Yours is to use giant words and come off very high-and-mighty. Hers is to love cats and randomness. There is enough room on this site for both of you.

I like to watch.

by MoveThoseChains on Sep 25, 2011 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you for your honest appraisal of the situation.

1) I don’t mind cats as much as being compared to “fighting cats” … that is an insult.
2) I am who I am (dual PhD, tenured professor, international lawyer, global consultant, former diplomat) and my breadth of knowledge could sometimes come off as condescending. That does not mean that I deserve to be called “condescending twerp”, “pompous dill-weed”, “cancerous” (implied) and likes. That is rude. Period.
3) You mentioned “You can’t question her love of the Magic and of basketball in general”. I don’t, but yet I reiterate basketball-related contribution, above and beyond all else. Setting that aside, would that give her the right to insult people, since I was not the only one? Go back and read the other thread (about Lewis) where I had a civil conversation with someone until she interjected herself, and despite my efforts to humor our way out, the name calling started. She even objected to being called “dear” by a “condescending twerp”.

Look, we cannot expect Evan to do all the control on this blog … he has a rather liberal approach of allowing lee-ways as long as profanity is not used. I was suggesting a rather tighter policy, but I don’t know whether or not that is feasible. If we want to stop personal attacks, we all have to be vocal in rejecting it, although in a civil manner.

by Matt1325 on Sep 25, 2011 6:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I am stunned

!) I’m sorry my small, simple female brain with a master’s degree who is a professor in college can’t keep up with all your big words, but that little line, the “dual PhD, tenured professor, international lawyer, global consultant, former diplomat” only further proves how up your own behind you are about yourself. No one should have to prove their worth on this site to talk about basketball! Or politics! Or anything else, for that matter. By constantly pointing out your credentials you’re fulfilling your own stereotype! THAT is why I called you condescending and YES, calling a women “dear” IS rude and sexist. That you can have so many ~degrees and not realize that is beyond me.

2) The thighs thing? I mean…WHAT? That is some epic stretching you’ve got going on there. “Check yo thighs in the mirror and I’m done” was a notorious line made by one of the contestants on America’s Next Top Model named Bianca, which she made in order to end a fight she was having with another girl. Don’t believe me? HERE. Skip to 1:08 if you still can’t grasp the joke for what it was. Or just google “Check your thighs in the mirror.” Was it a mature reply I made? No, and I apologize, but to get MELANOMA from THAT? No, sorry. That is ridiculous and I will NOT apologize for your absurd reaction to it.

3) You get offended by being compared to fighting cats. I can’t. I just cannot comprehend this. Don’t like cats? Fine, I get that. BUT HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT? If you were half the misunderstood ~gentleman you pretend to be, you would’ve just said, “hey, squid, I don’t like to be compared to cats because that’s a really weird thing to get offended by but hey I’m quirky like that, could you stop” and I WOULD HAVE STOPPED AND APOLOGIZED. But you didn’t. You kept dragging this out.

You are one of the strangest people I have EVER met on the internet, and I’ve been around for a long time, not just here at OPP but everywhere. I know by now when to step away from a conversation/fight and I did try to do that both here and in the other thread, but you are near impossible to reason with. For heaven’s sake, you commented in the other thread just because someone dared to rec one of my replies to you! Did that honestly piss you off? Who cares!

One of my very first comments to you when you first showed up here was a joke that your icon looked like Betty Boop when it was miniaturized and I remember very specifically that you completely overreacted to that comment. I should have realized then that you take yourself too seriously and believe anyone who isn’t as ~educated as you are (or as male as you are) is an idiot. Unfortunately for you, I’m not the kind of person who takes that attitude lying down. Deal with it. (I posted another link for you that explains that phrase so you don’t once again wildly misinterpret what I’m saying.)

by TheGiantSquid on Sep 25, 2011 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Don't be. You caused it as much as I tried to defuse the situation

1) I am proud of my accomplishments … am I not supposed to be? If you take it in the context of “how up your own behind you are about yourself” then you are not sincere on your apologies, wherever or whenever you offered them. I have used the word dear addressing those who are dear to me – male and female – for decades, and nobody found it offensive … it must be a generational evolution which I am not aware of. There are feminist studies/methodologies which are a valuable part of scientific research. I have to admit that I am not deeply involved with popular culture, but we have come a long way in establishing equalities for minorities – women included not by virtue of population but status – and if minorities are not confident enough about their position to the extent that they are offended by insinuation of words, then our accomplishments have gone in vain.
2) I have to admit to my ignorance in popular media since I don’t have the time to pay enough attention to them. Did the model you referred to used that expression innocently, and that should serve as a viable expression to end a conversation in the future?

Go back and read your comments throughout those two threads – especially the other one – and you will see that you initiated the aggression every time. You cannot end the conversation in a rude manner … that is like closing the phone on somebody. There are civil ways of closing a conversation, as I did with the Canadian gentleman on the other thread, of which untested – and potentially insulting – humor does not seem to be one.

As for the last paragraph, nobody is expecting you to be the “person who takes that attitude lying down”. That, however, does not mean that you could engage in personal attacks or would be immune from being countered or sanctioned when you do so.

Nothing is sacred on this land, right?

Then while we are at it why don’t we make fun of JFK’s “Don’t ask what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country” or Dr. King’s “I had a dream” speech? Shame on you.

You are all badly misguided if you don't see the dangers of getting on this slippery slope.

Cultural dimensions are a major study interest of mine at present time, and I have reviewed a few national cultures, carefully. There are sub-cultures within greater national cultures which almost all have a “taboo” or untouchable, whether be an artifact, issue or person of interest. Disrespecting these taboos create frictions leading to retaliation, confrontation or violence. While for us these could be issues of ‘first amendment’, and defensible in courts, they are not advisable from a social or political standpoint. Additionally, there are groups who manipulate these taboos intentionally to achieve their dirty goals in causing disturbances or violence. This has happened in some cultures which I studied, leading to violent clashes and even civil wars, not on matters of grave importance but on issues of seemingly simple nature (recent case in point: depiction of Islamic prophet in Denmark).

by Matt1325 on Sep 27, 2011 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I'll rely on centuries of American jurisprudence

to define the boundaries of protected and unprotected speech, as opposed to the research of some guy named Matt (which I’m confident serves no purpose other than pandering to the author’s ego).

And the Southpark guys already responded to that stupid Denmark issue.

by CaliFlorida on Sep 27, 2011 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Thank you for your kind words. What I see is 'unsophisticated worldviews' expressed by seemingly well-educated people.

I have already mentioned that American jurisprudence has nothing to do with cultural clashes, and it may be too late by the time the courts get involved in terms of the losses of lives and properties. Insult invites insult and violence invites violence … it’s that simple.

Regardless, you are entitled to your worldview inspired by “Southpark” and “Family Guy” level material. Good luck.

Because squid explained memes to me, I am able to post this in reply:

Was the Reagan thing in poor taste? Well, your moral stance is yours to keep, and I don’t question it; but there are obviously some here that do not share it, and that is their choice as well. I also sense that you probably feel under attack at this moment, so this post will probably received as hostile. But, for what it’s worth (as an anonymous post from someone that you don’t know), I don’t intend it to be such.

LOL. That cat is qute and looks alien. I am keen on aliens' stories.

I am not offended by Reagan’s clip but am concerned about that trend leading to a nasty vicious circle … think of a crazy idiot depicting Dr. King reciting his historic speech in his underwear … some fanatic supporter may kill for it.

But let’s drop serious stuff. I am aware that I have broken the golden rule of keeping discussions at a level that the audience understands or is willing to go to. Therefore, in a good jest borrowing from squid I would say: y’all check your thighs in the mirror and I am done.

I am not putting anybody down, and typically passed certain intelligence level, there are not ‘rights’ or ‘wrongs’ but rather good, better, and best. I had a student in one of my graduate level classes who would cite quite a bit of “Dilbert” cartoons, and the class decided to call him Dilbert Expert. I guess we can call you Family Guy Expert. I will however add that when we actually discuss what this Blog is all about, you do have a lot more people who agree with you. It is when we go OT that you seem to lose footing with the rest of us because, well, we all (this is the perception I have gathered from most comments in responding to this and other posts that are like it) feel like Stewie in the above clip when discussing things with you that aren’t basketball related.

That clip is hilarious.

Hey learning is not mandatory, and I admitted that I lost the track of what my audience is willing to take. Information has nothing to do with degrees but: a) comes with age; and b) the ability to methodically and critically research. I have had high level conversations with some members of this blog, and if some do not feel up to the task, they should take your suggestion – which I rec’d, BTW – not to read or engage in … nobody is forcing them.

I am learning everyday and that would not stop as long as I am alive. I feel sincerely that there are certain critical issues that the future generations of our great country should know and care about and, as a teacher, I jump on those “teachable moments” when they present themselves. Making rude comments as though I have personal grandiose agendas or to make attacking me a cheap gang style effort does not reflect well on this blog. But hey, if anybody feels like attacking me on this post, be my guest since it’s trendy these days to attack the “Matt Guy”

What are your thoughts

On the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, the media blackout, the US housing 104 of the existing 439 reactors worldwide (54 of which are in Japan and will without question be decommissioned), 35 of the 104 US reactors being General Electric Mark I type Boiling Water Reactors (Same design as Fukushima Dia-ichi #1 Plant reactors), The Savannah River Site (South Carolina) constructing a MOX fuel (Mixed Oxide, what was used in Fukushima Reactor #3 which is the most crippled of the 6 reactors) manufacturing plant to distribute to commercial facilities beginning in 2016, The NRC’s current practice of a 40 year operating license, The 1 reactor in TN under construction, the 7 planned reactors (including the 2 AP1000 units planned for Levy County, FL by Progress Energy in 2021) and the 27 proposed units?

Is the mocking of former presidents more unsettling to you than 79,000 troops in Iraq 32 months into the presidents 16 month guarantee? Is it more unsettling than lying to multiple nations about nuclear weapons in order to gain their approval to invade a country to steal their assets and force a way of life upon them? Bailing out investment banks and attaching them to commercial banks? Our current Foreign Policy? More unsettling than our inferior knowledge of nuclear energy production, reactor vessels, containment structures, cooling systems, long-term storage methods (given Plutonium-239’s 24,000 year half-life) and the fact that many of these facilities were erected on fault lines yet it remains at the forefront of our energy plan as we continue to license the construction of new facilities and renew the licenses of existing, archaic facilities?

You have made certain assumptions yet have no knowledge of what are the critical issues on my list.

We cannot debate all the ills of the world on this blog … it simply is not the right forum for it. And yes, some issues were brought up which I responded to but had no intention to drag out the matters unrelated to this blog. Just a couple of quick notes now that you have raised them:

1 – Energy policy is high on my list of economic revival and nuclear energy, in my view, has to be seriously looked at. I am not well-researched in this field, but it seems to me that France has safely and efficiently developed a model which provides around 70% of their needed electricity. Japanese model is rather old and unreliable and so is German’s, but French had basically no accident until recently although the reported accident had little or no contamination effect. For all known reasons, we have to reduce our reliance on fossil fuel but nuclear energy never got high on the list of any administration for the last two decades … that is, of course, in comparison with other nations’ concentration and efforts.
2 – I tend to believe that decent people observe self-imposed limitations with regard to historic events, quotes and personalities. I simply pointed that out and nothing more. Remember the old adage … those who have respect for nothing would be respected by no one?

Take care and thank you for the conversation.

Thanks for the conversation. I just read all the comments and saw the clip. It was too funny. I am waiting for more post here. Don’t know much about Orlando so can’t comment here but just enjoying here. Thanks to Dunlop to make such a great platform.

Regards..
