In what has become the annual offseason bro-building event, Jameer Nelson’s "Building Magic" is likely to be cancelled this year. In a conversation with Jameer’s agent, Steve Mountain, Magic Basketball Online has learned that there are currently no plans to hold this event. The lockout was cited as the primary reason.

(unsurprising) bad news bears
"(Dwight) Howard averages 23 points and 14 rebounds per game and is the defensive basketball equivalent of a guy carrying a bazooka during laser tag. No one wants to play with that kid."-Matt Moore
Been warned don't know why
HI Evan yesterday I made an Otis joke on how he would suffer for not being able to keep in touch with Arenas because of the lockout. I joked that arenas was his Girlfriend and I think that was pretty much it. I just meant to make a joke on how mucho Otis loves Arenas, was it offensive or something? I know it wasn’t the smartest joke ever, but hey, at least I wasn’t proposing to trade por CP3! Just wanted to know what was wrong, I am from a different culture so some stuff that may be right here is wrong there, so I am sorry if I wrote something inappropiate and apologize for it.
I do agree with you anyways.
I think he also had bad typing and no one could make out what he was saying.
Roll Bass and War Ryno for me
Sorry to bother you, but just to know what was wrong so I don't break the rules.
So you thought it was offensive? Trolling? Lame joke? I just got a warning saying in OPP we don´t want commentaries like “.(my message)” so I am not sure what I am not supposed to do again.
It seems like...
this would be the best time to hold this event. With the lockout, it would allow the players to get together, bond, workout, etc.; since they can’t do it “officially” at the Magic’s practice facility. Although, I guess they don’t have any idea when the season will actually start (if at all), so maybe it would be just a waste.

See above and below comments.
Lockout puts players in bunker mentality mode as far as discretionary spending. Plus, the Arenas factor has begun marginalizing Jameer’s leadership role.
Discretionary spending...
is probably not an issue for most of the Magic players. Maybe for some of the mid-salary guys, (Jameer?). (I’m not sure if you noticed how many Bentleys [sp?] Dwight Howard had in those planking photos, I counted 2.) I think it’s more down to your hurt feeling/marginalized leadership theory.

Regardless of the reason...
if they were professionals, which they’re suppose to be, they should probably be taking/making every attempt to get together during the lockout to get better for next season. Plus, I bet Gil is really good at paintball.

I think it's pretty clear that Arenas's negative chemistry is already showing.
It was pretty much his fault that Washington went from playoff contender to riddled with bullets.
Otis Smith, what you've just done is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard of. At no point in your rambling, incoherent trades were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having witnessed it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I heard Gilbert is also responsible for the National Debt, Katrina, and child obesity
How is it that this unusual man-hate towards Gilbert Arenas infects every single thread.
But please continue its kind of entertaining in a Jerry Springer kind of way!
Take your allergy to facts elsewhere.

I guess...
he and Dwight both are full of negative energy…since Dwight doesn’t have a problem with him.
Captain Jameer, I can understand that.
Lockout, trade talks, chemistry and the fact that your GM wants to give the starting job to somebody else.
Enjoy summer.
That's a bummer.
We need to build stronger bros. Plus I was looking forward to Gil’s tweets during the getaway.
The intensity has to go up, up! Not down...UP! -Stan Van Gundy
Lockout prohibits contacts between owners and players or using owners-facilities. This to me is indicative of the lack of chemistry amongst the players, but I am not going to speculate the root causes.
It's standard operating proceedure during a lockout
It’s not indicative of anything. Wouldn’t be much of a lockout if everyone showed up for work like normal.

Lockout does not prohibit players from getting together or train on non-NBA-owned grounds. How that is not indicative of the lack of chemistry or desire to get together?
I think it's more an indication of how unlikely it is there's going to be basketball any time soon

That's a sobering thought.
Though still…it has to show a little bit that they simply don’t want to hang out very much.

Yeah, that makes more sense. Jameer could not have a deep insight on how long the lockout is going to last.
He doesn't need one
He needs two eyes and a team player rep with the NBAPA.

If you think there wil be be a regular NBA schedule in 2011/12
You’re huffing paint.
It’s a question of how many games get lost, not if they get lost. And it’s precisely because it’s so complicated and both sides are so set in their positions that makes it so unlikely anything will get achieved until both sides really start to hurt.
What’s the point of hanging out with guys in August if you won’t see them again until December?

Who said that there will be a regular NBA schedule?
Let me make my point clear so that it would not come back to me with interest. Nobody knows how long the lockout may last, but whether it is short or long, these guys are eventually going to be on the same team, and there is no prohibition for them to hang out, bind together, and enjoy each other … that is if they do.
It is not one or the other; it is most likely a combination
of all the conditions stated thus far:
- The Magic roster has never been this much in flux; with every single one of it’s players (including Dwight) being in a situation to possibly be traded or waived in the near future.
- players need to be wise with their cash in case of a prolonged lockout
- when and if there will be a season – this is likely an indicator that the players don’t think the lockout ends anytime soon or at minimum want to posture as if it won’t.
- the NBAPA likely has advised against such activities as it displays to the GM’s that its business as usual and of course in doing so it weakens the players stance.
That's just not how pro sports work
Guys aren’t friends with their teammates. They might have one or two they hang out with, but whenever there’s nothing official on, they go and hang out with their real “crew”.
So no, there’s no official prohibition from them hanging out. Just around 100,000 years of human behavioural evolution.

Sorry mate!
I enjoy conversing with you but when it gets to extremely minute details, it does not fit my borrowed time on the blog. Also, I find exaggeration, absolutism and sarcasm distasteful, and sometimes disrespectful.
I am sure you remember MagicMark who was so attentive to details to the extent that he would look up terms on dictionaries to prove a point. I don’t care whether anybody – or myself for that matter – is off a bit on matters of unimportant nature. Let it be.
Without this one single event, people won't be able to give Jameer false credit for being a leader.
This annual “Jameer Weekend” has for years managed to fool most fans into thinking Jameer has strong leadership qualities. A stunning farse that has worked for far too long. He’s silent on the court and visibly silent in the huddle. I’d assume it’s the same way in the lockerroom. Losing this weekend may finally expose that unhidden secret to the blind masses. Unless there’s no season at all… then he will have pulled off the illusion again. Sneaky lil fella.

Well, if you assume it
It must be true.
by eltharion_doa on Jul 7, 2011 6:01 AM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
It's simply a fact, although stated harshly.
In many reviews of Jameer’s performance I’ve finally started to see questions about his leadership abilities. Perhaps even a brief mention in yours Evan.
It’s part of the reason why the Magic have been willing to shop him a bit and why the fantasy of bringing in a PG like Paul or Williams is so appealing.
Did I state my opinion harshly and in a smart a$# tone? Yes I did. But it’s the truth, and the “Jameer Weekend” has helped mask that issue for some.

I disagree.
I doesn’t seem to me that “building magic” was ever presented as the evidence of Jameer’s leadership abilities, nor did I as a fan take it as such, so I don’t see the event not ocurring does nothing to change my perception of Jameer. These blind masses you speak of must be somewhat, well, easily persuaded.
But you are entitled to your opinion.
I don't get the whole 'pop-tart cats pooping rainbows thing,' but then, I'm old. So, there it is.
*It, and strike "I don't see"
I don't get the whole 'pop-tart cats pooping rainbows thing,' but then, I'm old. So, there it is.
The discussions regarding the Magic trading Jameer certainly are not in relation to his leadership abilities. Those discussions are because Jameer is one of the few assets the team has with tradeable value. To get something back of value, you must give up value. Enter, Jameer trade speculation.

Too bad it's the lockout
If it's lonely at the top, I'd rather be alone
cause the closest people to ya, the ones who gonna do you wrong
I new people would misread that.
As you can see I clearly said the words “part of the reason”. Meaning that even though he is a valuable trade chip, the Magic might be less likely to shop him around if he was an unquestionable floor general.
That’s one thing I’ve hated about posting comments on here. If you don’t scribble everything out one here in crayon with big block letters people can and will completely misinterpret your meaning.
So again, PART of the Magic’s willingness to shop him, not all or the only reason.

Jameer could be General Freaking Patton on the court.
It would still be an easy decision to replace him with Paul or Williams. Leadership issues have no real weight in terms of preferring Chris Paul, best PG on the planet, to a middle of the road PG. I’m sorry if you have such a negative opinion of the guy that’s been our second best player over the past two years (for better or worse), but you shouldn’t let that alter the reality that he does speak up in interviews, on the court, and is constantly in communication with Van Gundy while he’s on the floor. And believe it or not, things like your so-called “Jameer Weekend” do promote team unity.
But it’s cool, just go ahead and respond to any critical opposition with cries of, “People on this board don’t like me and won’t agree with me!” simply because you make a wild, short-sighted claim.

Why is there even any drama associated with this?
How are you supposed to have a team-building weekend when, y’know, you don’t know who’s going to be on the team? Literally every player on the team is in a possible position to be moved.

Sorry to be douchey, but that's the best point yet and something I didn't think of.
The 2011-2012 Magic team does not exist as of now. And it’s a complete unknown as to which players it will consist of, if and when it comes to exist.
