SVG is a great coach, and I think he can get the most out of his team with his passion, great play calling, and defensive mind-set. But he needs to change his offensive gameplan, and stop relying on the 3's so much because some teams have figured out how to stay on the shooters. We need a playmaking guard that is capable of performing at a high level during the playoffs. Hopefully, as Game 4 showed, we might have a player capable of doing that.
SVG needs to let Gilbert Arenas out of his doghouse and accept the player that he is. Yesterday, he showed what he is still capable of doing, especially under intense pressure of the playoffs (which is a factor why I believe Anderson is struggling). He's capable of being a great player during the playoffs, like when he was on Washington and they had those battles with Cleveland (Arenas Game Log) The guy averaged like 30ppg, and shot 46%. I understand that this is a small sample, and that he is not the same player due to injuries, but he's a smart basketball player, and he is capable of changing his game and still being effective in big game situations. You have to accept that he's turnover prone and doesn't shoot a great fg% at times, but he still can create for others and "get hot" and score 20+ points in the playoffs.
SVG needs to let Arenas play consistent backup minutes, like he "forcefully" had to do last night b/c Richardson was suspended, so that Arenas doesn't have to think of things like "If I make one mistake out here, coach is gonna pull me out of the game". That is a big psychological burden that Arenas has before even entering the game, and he shouldnt' be having those. Instead, you have let Arenas play his game, trust him, and let him loose so that he can focus soley on the game being played. And you have to accept his negatives (TO's and bad shots) or else we will be wasting 20+ mill dollars, and all hope for the next 3 seasons.
SVG shouldn't DNP him and keep giving him sporadic playing time (12 mins game 1, 6 mins game 2) especially if he isn't hurt...Arenas is going to be on this team for the next 3 years, whether you like it or not, and we need to make this relationship work or else our team is screwed (especially since Hedo has appeared to lose ALL the confidence he used to have during our Finals run..I am probably 10x more nervous about having Hedo on our team the next couple year than Arenas. That guy is falling apart in only Round 1..if he doesn't show up for Game 5, then I will believe he is a lost cause).
Even if we lose this season, we need to give Arenas consistent playing time next year (15-25 mins) and let him do his thing and see if we can save this expensive relationship. We have to hope he can still fit into his "Agent Zero" costume, like he did last game, and save us from a first round exit, or even worse, Dwight leaving. SVG has got to learn to trust him whether he wants to or not!
