I won't be able to participate in the game thread with y'all :(
because I don’t have ANY INTERNET IN MY APARTMENT AAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!
God I hate this city. Anyway, I think we’ve got this. No, I KNOW we’ve got this.
We’ve got this, we’ve got this, we’ve got this, we’ve got this… *rocks back and forth *
I'm a girl.
Talk about lame sauce
Here’s hoping you (and the Magic) can hold it together.

Q @ SG?
Um, alright. Defensively, it’s good. I’m feeling optimistic about the game, so hopefully it turns out well. Dwight should have fun being defended by Collins & Horford the whole game.

David Stern is in the arena tonight
According to David Steele. Just Great.
Orlando Magic. Oregon Ducks. Seattle Mariners. Jacksonville Jaguars.
I was very critical of the team after the last game...
…Having said that, we are gonna roll tonight. No worries. We play well when our backs are against the wall.
I'm somewhat like the fact that
the team is faced with a challenging series. When they went to the finals, they had to go six in the first round against the sixers and win a game 7 in Boston. Celts were also taken to seven games when they won.
Last season I was worried about them not facing any ‘adversity’ and they ended up losing ECF. Over the last two seasons, teams who breezed through the first two rounds ended up losing in the ECF. In 2009, the Magic had the advantage of being challenged and knew how to respond, unlike the cavs.
I think a competitive series like this is necessary for them to win that trophy. That being said, I believe they are on a mission to win it all this year and can’t/won’t be stopped.
"I believe they are on a mission to win it all this year and can’t/won’t be stopped."
What have they showed you in the last 2 months that makes you honestly believe that?

Magic won't stop shooting threes
This is SVG’s offense, he’s not going to make adjustments. The Magic either win with the three or lose ugly.
We need to clean house in the offseason…new GM, new coach.
Yeah
The Magic should be missing way more two pointers. What a joke!
by eltharion_doa on Apr 24, 2011 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions
No, the Magic should be driving to the hoop
That would get them to the line so that they can start getting some feel for their shots.
Trying to shoot yourself out of a slump with more low percentage shots rarely works.
Ahaha
Yeah, the Magic, the most unathletic team in the NBA, should totally be driving to the hoop, so Atlanta can steal the ball and block the crap out of Orlando’s weak sauce.
JJ Redick driving on Joe Johnson? Turk driving on Josh Smith? Anderson driving on Al Horford?

Sure, these guys aren't the most athletic
But they are in the NBA. If they didn’t have at least a certain level of athleticism, they wouldn’t even be in the league.
The bottom line is the three or nothing offense is failing miserably, they need to try something, anything different.

Sorry that you think I'm an idiot...
for having an opinion contrary to you, but the fact is that we’re 1 for 14 (15?) behind the three point line, and taking really bad shots right now. Most coaches would have benched several of these guys by now just to get a different energy out on the floor, but SVG doesn’t seem to have a problem with players taking bad 3’s.

How is it his fault that the players can't hit a three right now?
And what “adjustments?” We all know who these guys are. Other than Jameer, not one shooter can create. They’re three pointer specialists who can’t make a three pointer.
If you're watching a blowout, you can pass the time by counting the double teapots.

Jameer could be driving more
Hedo has the ability to drive to the basket, JJ can get to the rim, brandon bass SHOULD be able to drive a bit….

I've watched the magic since the day they came in the league
And I’ve seen every one of the players on this team get to the rim at some point during the season. At this point SOMETHING needs to change.
And I post this as I watch Hedo jack up another sorry three attempt to start the second half….
Oh, OK
The Magic should base their offense around something a guy did once.
In a whole season.
Genius.

You expect Hedo, JJ and Bass to drive?
1. Hedo just stinks. He’s unathletic, and the only redeeming thing is his height, which allows him to shoot over people. He doesn’t drive.
2. JJ is coming back from injury. He can’t hit any shot right now, and guys are gonna play off him, preventing him from driving.
3. Bass isn’t a driver. He just hits the mid-range jumper. He doesn’t have the ballhandling skills.
If you're watching a blowout, you can pass the time by counting the double teapots.

To all those saying Orlando is dying by 3's
Orlando is dying by bad 3 point shot attempts. They are not getting any of them through the offense. They are forcing them. That is not the Orlando offense. When Orlando wins by 3 no one says anything. I will agree that Orlando is taking horrible shots. But it is because they are forcing them.

The players are who they are
van Gundy can’t coach guys into athleticism. He can’t teach height.
Who put together a roster where the only guy with any ability to create his own shot is a barely 6 foot point guard? Who traded away the best post forward on the team? Who booted the one half-athletic wing who could take the ball in his hands and create a shot? Who threw out the best wing defender? Who traded the backup C?
van Gundy didn’t do any of those things.

The Addidas marketing people really did a grear job selling the idea that Dwight is Superman, especially on the judges.
That’s why they never call flagrants or anything when it comes to Dwight. Superman can take it all.

This is maddening.
If the magic were shooting a poor 25% from 3pt range, theyd be up by 5. If they were shooting their season average, they’d be up by at least 8. But… 1-16? How does this happen? And somehow Jamal Crawford has channeled his inner Ray Allen all series.

Set a pick and if they switch than hit the other man. Arenas and Q 3pt % is a lot better than Turk's.

It's not that easy at the end of games

Orlando pulled the Hawks back to 46% shooting
They actually played reasonable defense in the second half. Just couldn’t hit a shot to save their lives. Story of the series, really.
No
Because their offense is absolutely awful.

yeah, the least of the Magic's problems right now is the defense. They actually made quite a few stops when needed, late in the game.
… but couldn’t take advantage on the other side of the court, when it came to actually get a bucket for themselves.

Well, look at it this way
The magic have shot HORRIBLE all series, and yet the hawks haven’t been able to really pull away from them.
If the magic shooters can get hot, it’s not unrealistic that they could shoot Atlanta out of the building in the next 3 games.
Agreed
But it’s gonna’ take some amazing play – especially difficult given the relative confidence of the teams and their players.
The plural of "anecdote" isn't "data."
Well.
It’s panic time. Hysteria. Massive posts about changes that needed to be made. Fire Otis. Fire SVG. Trade Dwight. Its all Jameer’s fault. VC would have made that shot. Lewis would have stayed healthy. Arenas and Turk’s contracts will kill this franchise. Get your Bynum jersey. Get your Brook Lopez Jersey. Burn your Dwight jerseys. Die by the 3. Blow up everything. I think I covered it all right?

Yep, used to happen with Lewis too.
Stan would never sit Lewis (earlier this season), even after struggling with the knee injury, or even when Bass and Anderson were outperforming Rashard.
With all that said, I miss (healthy) Rashard.

When Rashard was healthy he was a beast on the 4 position
SVG need to sit Ryan Anderson down to watch some of Rashard’s plays from the past playoffs so that he can learn how to abuse other Teams while playing the stretch 4 position and luring the power forwards out to the 3 point-line while Dwight abuses the Center

Yes
Unless by some miracle the Magic can acquire another all star level player, there is no way Dwight would want to stay here. This roster is full of players who are past their prime and make way too much money.
problem is any team willing to trade for Howard, will be lowballing the Magic, cause they know there's desperation in Orlando.

I don't know, if Otis trades with the savvy Lakers, I expect them to dupe him into taking their sh*ttiest players and a bag of chips.
Or just go Howard for Bynum, straight up, and Otis will say yes. Despite Bynum’s injury history and not being really quite as good as Dwight.

Donnie Walsh is one of the best GMs in basketball
But I’m guessing you have no idea who that is
You are correct, but he was undermined by Isiah Thomas for the Melo trade.

Donnie Walsh hasn't had any power in the New York front office
For about 8 months, which you’d know if you weren’t a smug, rude, arrogant troll.

How am I troll?
and your comment about him having no power for 8 months is laughable
Of course it is
That’s why he hasn’t, and won’t, have his contract extended; why Dolan has stacked the front office with Isiah Thomas’ associates; and why the Knicks just gave away all their young talent for a guy they could have signed for nothing.
Because Donnie Walsh has so much power.

Because Dolan is a fool
is why Walsh won’t be brought back.
Yep, Walsh is not the problem. The Knicks organization is.

So
Which part of “Knicks are stupid” did you disagree with, again?

Bulls actually could offer a good deal for Orlando (compared to other teams)
with a deal built around Noah.
by LoveForTheGame on Apr 24, 2011 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Noah's average
Even Bynum would be better.
And Howard can’t sign with Chicago as a FA, so the Magic have little reason to trade him there unless the deal is outstanding.
by eltharion_doa on Apr 24, 2011 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Howard has all the leverage. He can pretty much dictate where he wants to go
unless Orlando is willing to lose him for nothing. It could potentially turn into the ‘Melo situation, and it already seems like he’s interested in the Lakers and Knicks (big market teams)
by LoveForTheGame on Apr 24, 2011 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions
'Melo could sign for the Knicks as a FA
Howard can’t sign for the Lakers or Knicks as a FA. Which means Orlando has the leverage of “stay here or go somewhere crap.”
The only chance Orlando has of keeping Howard is being willing to risk losing him for nothing. If they put a max contract on the table, say “we’re not trading you – go play for the Timberwolves if you want” and risk it, he might stay. If they trade him, they guarantee he leaves.

Howard can go to the Nets
and play with Deron Williams
He can
But even if the Nets can bring back Williams and sign Dwight, they’ll have no talent on the roster behind those two. And, depending on the new CBA and what the Nets do next season with players (they only have 7 players contracted for 2011/12 at the moment), they might not even have the cap space to sign a max FA.
Does that offer a better chance of competing than Orlando does? Maybe. But I’d be willing to ask Dwight to take that risk.
by eltharion_doa on Apr 24, 2011 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions
nets would be solid with those two though

Orlando's solid now
Dwight isn’t going to leave for “solid”.

Yeah, I see your point. It's still way too early to talk about trading Dwight.
It’s still a full year away, plus a possible lockout, a possible new CBA, etc. etc.
In the meantime, here is hoping for that improbable comeback this series, this year, right now.

Obviously now is not the time to talk about this. I hope Orlando finds a way to keep him.
It’s getting annoying that all the big stars are trying to play in the big markets (even as a Bulls fan)

I can't belive we shot 9% from the 3
That is really Sad.

What happened with JJ and Anderson?
I can understand JJ’s problems with that abdominal strain, which he still suffers. Is Ryan injured too?

And he’s rushing his shots.

IS NOT SVG FAULT that his players missed WIDE OPEN 3s
Game plan was perfect, we only needed to shoot 25% from 3 and we had this game.
The problem is that his gameplan is still the same as it was 3 yeras ago, but now his players are worse except for Howard
What's the alternative?
What’s the miraculous gameplan that makes unathletic three point shooting players suddenly awesome at something else?
by eltharion_doa on Apr 24, 2011 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't know if Phil Jackson's and Red Auerbach's lovechild could've won a game when his players are shooting less than 40% from the field.

Less than 40% on wide open shots. Is not that they are taking bad shots because of a poor designated offense.
Reddick and Anderson missed at least 4 uncontested 3s. Bass missed several uncontested long 2s. That’s not Van Gundy’s fault. Our defense was good, we still keep them under 90, we just need average shooting from our role players.
Even below average shooting would have won the last two games
Just not horrifically below average shooting.
by eltharion_doa on Apr 24, 2011 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly
As SVG said in the post game presser, even the game we won we shot 34%.
The plural of "anecdote" isn't "data."
I was just checking that. Wow. Even last year against the Celtics, when people were complaining about how bad the Magic were playing, it was better than this.
And it was the Celtics, not the Hawks. Best they’ve shot in the series was 45% in game 1, and from 3pt land the “best game” was game 3 with just 28%

unbelievable stat
I have no idea why so many players confidence level in their own shooting is so low. The looks were there. Stan gets alot of stick, but there wasn’t a lack of opportunities. I think if he could incorporate more motion in the offense rather then just pick and roll, it would help a bit. Saw them call a couple curls for JJ but he couldnt hit them.
lack of confidence?
does any of you know if there are some tensions within the team that could explain (a little bit) their lack of confidence? that’s really disappointing to see them down 3-1 shooting at such a low percentage… :-(
soooo, when is Dwight free to walk/be traded?
end of this season or next?
He can opt after next season.
Hopefully he gives us next season and the season after to fix Otis Smith’s mess.
Roll Bass and War Ryno for me
thanks guys
really starting to worry, but if we have another season to prove ourselves, I think we will be fine. The roster churn midseason was just too drastic IMO. Changes need to be made obviously but, very glad we have a bit more time.
