SB Nation sister site Silver Screen and Roll, which covers the L.A. Lakers, argues Dwight Howard should win this year's MVP award over Derrick Rose.

I have always said that Rose reminds me of a more humble Iverson.

Still do not like teams where the Point is the best player. Only the Pistons of early 90’s with Isiah Thomas. And Magic Johnson was 6’9. The only PG that tall. Also had Kareem Abdul Jabbar and James Worthy. HOF Finishers.

rose is no iverson. this is to say he is a better overall player. and if you are comparing them because of his scoring ability, then you are leaving out many variables as to why he averages the points he does.

Rose is no Iverson.

Rose has been great for one season. Iverson was great(however inefficient he was you can not deny his greatness) for MULTIPLE years. When Rose does this for more than one season, then you can say he is potentially better than Iverson. Rose is in his 3rd season. Let’s hold the breaks on calling him a HOF already. Iverson will go to the HOF, just in case you were wondering.

he has the potential

But you can not say it just yet. Remember Iverson took scrubs to the Finals.

It is a lost cause for Dwight, not matter what the stat heads think.

Yet, Dwight does not have a high enough assist rate to be MVP.

Okay, a simple "wrong" would've done just fine.

Very informative post from SS & R

No question Howard is the dominant offensive and defensive player in the league.

Great article, thanks for posting.

When Bynum plays the way he can

He is easily the second best center behind Dwight. Remember he is the 5th or 6th option on the Lakers. Having said that obviously don’t want to lose Dwight, but if push comes to shove, I would settle for him. As long as Gasol is in the trade as well.

are you crazy?

No way in hell anyone is giving up Bynum and Pau for Dwight…not going to happen.

by plyka on Mar 23, 2011 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Why on earth would the Lakers give up both Gasol and Bynum?

Gasol will be getting on by that point, I guess?

Arenas and Howard for Bynum and Gasol.

Gasol's game doesn't depend a whole lot on athleticism

And he can probably shoot midrange jumpers from the high post, which is what he mostly does nowadays, until he’s 40. This isn’t to say that he’ll maintain this level of play, but he’ll age fairly gracefully.

Because they are getting the better player in the trade.

Orlando gives them Anderson or Bass and Lakers would have to take it if they want Dwight that bad. The only way they get him is via trade. Won’t have cap space. If your orlando that is the only way you trade Dwight as well.

The Lakers want Howard, but won't give the house for him

Why would the Lakers sacrifice their primary strength (their frontcourt) for Howard? And Gasol’s ability to switch between both frontcourt position is what makes that rotation work, so it’s a bit pointless to trade him when we haven’t had a good backup five and don’t project to have one barring the Lakers getting someone like Keith Benson in the draft. No doubt Howard is the best piece in that trade, but Gasol’s and Bynum’s combined impact far outweighs Howard’s.

Regardless, any scenario that involves Howard going to the Lakers will mean that he’ll be a free agent and he’ll ask for a sign-and-trade to the Lakers. Assuming that other teams will have cap space (which seems rather likely, as the summer of 2012 is being talked of in terms of the 2010 one), Orlando will have a lot less leverage than you’re presenting, as Howard can simply threaten to sign as a free agent with another team and leave with you nothing. This doesn’t preclude other scenarios — Howard can certainly sign an extension beforehand — but this is the only one in which the Lakers become involved.

Again they would get the best player in the trade

And I know Dwight in theory could threaten to sign with another team, but if his dream is to go to LA, then the Magic would have the leverage. Besides LA could just slid Odom to PF. They would still have their frontcourt. And in reality if I am the lakers, if I can pair Dwight with Kobe, I would not really need Bynum or Gasol. Dwight is better than both combined.

Simply because Howard is the best player doesn't make it a good trade

The Lakers don’t have to make this trade. They’re totally fine going forward with a Gasol/Bynum/Odom frontcourt. And completely disagree that Howard alone is a bigger impact than Gasol and Bynum combined. The Lakers’ primary strength is that at all times, they can field two All-Star or borderline All-Star caliber big men which overwhelms most other frontcourts along with Kobe being on the perimeter. Howard is great, but he’s not ‘99-’02 Shaq, which this trade would make the Lakers into a rough analogue of. Lakers will make this trade on their terms or not make it at all. That’s the bottom line. If Howard is a free agent, then he’ll go to a team with cap space if Orlando doesn’t want to take compensation from the Lakers.

I agree with

I meant in the event that the Lakers desperately want him in the offseason. Sorry I implied it, but don’t think I made that clear. Again yes the lakers do not have to make this trade, but if they get desperate if I am the Magic, that is what I would demand.

There's no reason for them to get desperate though

They obviously would love to get Howard if the opportunity presented itself, but if Orlando doesn’t like the package they’re offering, they move on and Howard goes to a team with cap space.

But yeah.. Lakers fans praising Dwight? I’m suspicious just by reading the title and author.

Actually only Chicago fans and the TV media think Rose should be MVP

Every other city’s fans think Dwight should be MVP. You would be surprised.
