Team officials don't know exactly how many games starting power forward Brandon Bass will miss because of a left-ankle injury. But it's clear that the limited depth at the power forward and center spots will become an issue in the days ahead.

Time for another Trade

I think the magic should consider trading J-Rich… The Bobcats wanted him back earlier in the season and we might be able to strike a deal with mr. Jordan… I would try and trade J-Rich for Stephen Jackson and S. Diop.. The trade works on NBA Trade Machine and it gets us a backup Bigg and a SG that can score and handle his own on the Defensive end….

If that doesnt work its a least worth a shot to call up Detroit and ask them about a possible trade maybe J-Rich for Rip Hamilton and a couple toss ins….

I think its clear we are not going to outscore teams without some defensive pressence and if it gets much worse we are in danger of losing Howard like Clevland lost Lebron…

by MagicMichael on Feb 2, 2011 12:34 PM EST reply actions

How bout this then

J-Rich for Kwame Brown, and Stephen Jackson

or

J-Rich for A. Igudala and T. Battie

We have too many 3pt shooters we need some Defense both those moves fills big holes for the magic…

And as for the Hamilton thing goes… Hamilton plays better defense then J-Rich hes like an old mans Courtney Lee

by MagicMichael on Feb 2, 2011 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

Kwame Brown is no better than Malik Allen, and JRich is better than Stephen Jackson.

Philly will also want a whole lot more than just an expiring contract for Igoudala.

by MagicMark on Feb 2, 2011 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

I completely agree

If you look at what Kwame has done this year he has come in and played good Defense and rebounded the ball as well as put up some points… He is a liabilty on the free throw line but he doesnt get there very often…. he could help

He’ll never live down his draft spot, but he’s a competent player at this stage of his career.

If you are going to suggest a trade, no matter how foolish, DO NOT include injured players, especially those out for the year.

It truly damages your credibility.

Hello, handsome, is that a ten-gallon hat or are you just enjoying the show?

by Both_Teams_Played_ on Feb 2, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

My bad I dont follow the Bobcats very closely considering they suck

And by the way Stephen Jackson is more valuble to the magic then J-Rich because J-Rich plays no defense at all… we have plenty of shooting with JJ as the backup we need Defense badly….

Im guessing nobody has noticed over the last few games that we double team opposing players all game long because J-Rich and Hedo and Jameer cant play one on one defense…. Its causing us to collapse into the paint and leave guys like Mike Conley to get wide open 3s all night long…

Just wait till you see D-wade and Lebron tear us up from the 3 pt line tomorrow night then you will be on board to get rid of J-Rich for someone who can play defense

This is what we lost when we let players like C.Lee, Barnes, and Pietrus go…

by MagicMichael on Feb 2, 2011 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

It does look like you do not follow the Bobcats. Captain Jack plays zero defense.

WTF

Captin Jack can play defense at 6-8 215 he plays bigger than he is and creates steals… What does J-Rich do other than shoot 3s… NOTHING… we can do without his scoring once JJ gets healthy again… Plus Jackson will do more to get to the free throw line which we need bad

by MagicMichael on Feb 2, 2011 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously, watch the games

He’s a mediocre defender and he left his offensive game in California.

by eltharion_doa on Feb 2, 2011 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Cant get much worse than J-Rich's Defense

plus If you look at espn Jackson scored 24 against the stingy defense of utah not to long ago… hes averaging 18pts a contest.. but I guess you watch all the bobcat games and know more than me

by MagicMichael on Feb 2, 2011 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

I don't have to watch them all

I look at his 14.19 PER, his 51.1 TS% (below league average), his negative (!!!) offensive win shares, and I note the way he chucks up nearly 16 shots a game whilst making just over 6 of them (at around 40%), and and then I watch the Bobcats 5 or 6 times and realise that he’s a awful shooting ball hog who puts up points in Charlotte’s because he throws so many awful basketballs at the hoop, sooner or later some of them have to go in.

If you want a guy who shots 40% from the field, 33.5% from three point land, who doesn’t play a lick of defense, and who, despite being as bad a volume shooter as you’ll find in the entire league, still chucks up 16 shots a game then yeah, Capn’ Jack’s your man.

Along with Duhon, Allen, and Q-Rich…he is definitely a tradeable asset at this stage. Those of you suggesting to trade J-Rich have not realized that he is Stan’s closer for the time being. That means he’s going nowhere.

Who's to say Otis doesn't have a plan? When has he ever not had a plan?

He just doesn’t tell us what that plan is. For all we know, his trades are a setup for the off season.

I’m not saying that’s the case, but the man may be sacrificing short-term losses for long term gains. He said as much prior to the Arenas trade.

by MagicPhan on Feb 3, 2011 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

Long term gains?

Like winning within the next two years to keep Dwight happy with the team’s direction? How does taking on overpaid, old players with long contracts on top of overpaying old players with long contracts during the summer achieve that long term gain?

Or does Otis already have the master plan for the post-Dwight era?

That's not entirely acurate..."they refuse to attack the basket"

Three players go at it all the time: Howard, Bass and Anderson.

As for the rest… J-Rich thrives on drives to the basket… on fast breaks. He COULD do more post ups, though… Nelson drives occacionally, when there’s space. Arenas doesn’t want to get tangled up and hurt his knees.

JJ likes to when he can. It’s interesting that when he and Howard do the give-and-go on the left side, JJ is ready to receive the ball to drive to the basket… but Howard NEVER hands it back to him… never. Howard just starts his usual side-to-side slow dribble thing… you know.

Q-Rich and Duhon… well they are KAPUT! Offensive non-entities…

Yes, it's the defense

When we fall behind, even seven or eight pts; it’s very hard to come back, as we don’t make enough D-stops. Last year and the year before, the Magic would stop teams on their tracks for long spells; even a 20-pt lead was like nothing!

Moreover, the poor D affects our offense too! Without Defense, the Magic are not contenders, period.

I'd rather have Rashard than Arenas right now, yes.

And for next year too. Bass could’ve still played back-up 5 minutes (like he already has been doing without Gortat), so I don’t understand the “We needed to trade Rashard or else we had to keep benching Bass or Ryan” theory.

We also would’ve had more depth in the event of an injury to a frontcourt player…. like what’s happened now…

Anyone that has seen Arenas over the past 3 seasons and wasn't in denial thought he would play the way he did.

Bass would’ve been doing backup 5 minutes, and Anderson and Lewis would be manning the 4. Maybe in that order, maybe not.

Anderson's playing back-up 5 depending on match-ups.

He and Bass have split the time there since the trade. Bass is better suited to guard most centers in comparison to Anderson because he has more bulk. Not to mention the fact he gets his wish granted of not having to move around too much on defense.

by eltharion_doa on Feb 3, 2011 3:03 AM EST up reply actions

I agree 100% about the defense but...

The fact is the magic rely too much on jump shooting… if you watch the last couple losses we were up by as many as 10… Then all of a sudden the shots stop falling but instead of trying to get into the lane for either a layup or a foul and a trip to the line… the Magic start jacking up even more shots and most of the time contested shots.. leading to long rebounds and fast break points for the opponent… you guys cant tell me you dont see it…

by MagicMichael on Feb 2, 2011 3:14 PM EST reply actions

Im talking about in game stretches

The magic go on 1-3 cold stretches a game and when that happens they let the team back in the game because they jack up contested jumpers or quick 3s… Im just saying to put away teams they need to get to the basket during these cold streaks.. thats how you keep a lead…

There’s a slight effect. Compared to his career numbers, in games where LeBron has faced Hedo, he’s scored 1.6 fewer points and shot .453 (his career average is .475), which isn’t really significant. The big difference is 3PT% – LeBron is a career .331 long-range shooter, but has shot the three at only .229 against Turk. I think it’s the combination of Turk and Howard that negate LBJ – Turk is long enough to give him trouble from outside, and D12 cuts off his ability to drive at will.

Orlando likes what they have in Turk, J-Rich and Arenas that's what they were brought in for

Trade indirectly like what Dallas did with Toronto

Dallas got G-F Peja Stojakovic off waivers and traded Alex Ajinca for Rights to Georgios Printezis.

Nets could Waive Troy Murphy (let him talk to Orlando first)
Orlando gets Troy Murphy off-waivers and trades Quinton Ross and Joey Graham for Quinton Richardson.

Howard / Murphy / Allen
Anderson / Bass – better off the bench becuase Anderson and Murphy are similar /Clark
Turk / J-Rich / Graham
J-Rich / Reddick / Ross
Nelson / Arenas / Duhon

and if Billy King can’t find Murphy a home before the deadline, Murphy agent Dan Fegan steps in and ask for a buy out.

Thats why you do it behind closed doors

like Toronto and Dallas did, players need to talk to other teams before taking a buyout.
Peja himself and Dallas knew he would sign with the Mavs before being bought out or you think GM’S , Owners actaully follow every rule of the NBA rule book?

Other NBA teams wanted the league to investigate that senario involving Toronto and Dallas, IMO they did nothing wrong, they just found a senerio to help their teams repectively.

Denver was going to let NJ talk to Carmelo, in this case NJ is going to let Orlando talk to Murphy and Ross-Graham for Q-Rich can be completely different deals like CUBAN SAID.

by JJ25 on Feb 2, 2011 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

And the league never could find out

if what Dallas and Toronto did was “Illegal” like you say.

by JJ25 on Feb 2, 2011 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

No

it could still be “Illegal” like Evan says but how can the league prove what they did was Illegal? Until this day nothing has comeup on that situation becuase it’s not a big deal, whats so illegal of giving your player permission to talk to other teams- buy him out then swap some pieces with that same team?

by JJ25 on Feb 2, 2011 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

illegal at the end of the day means fines. there was definitely some discussions with LeBron before he could officially talk. and the NBA fined the Lakers for talking to Shaq before they could. fact is, the teams factor in such “illegalities” as a price of doing business. especially if the fish is big enough.

The fact that fines and penalties are not large enough to be any deterrent to illegal activities, don't make them right.

We should be condemning – or at least discouraging – such activities at the court of public opinion, and labeling the fines as “the cost of doing business” is not helpful. I am sure we are in agreement in that regard.

by Matt1325 on Feb 2, 2011 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

i agree. they should dock them draft picks or hinder their ability to spend money in free agency or make trades. whatever. the fines are obviously not a deterrent. i doubt the cHeat would be too happy with the inability to spend money in this free agent season considering they need to surround their 3 100 million dollar stars with talent.

What can we do with the guys we have?

Trade scenarios are just wishful thinking. We have what we have right now.

I’d probably try this against Miami:

Jameer/Arenas/Duhon
J-Rich/JJ/Arenas
Q-Rich/Turk
Anderson/Clark
Howard/Anderson

The starting unit gets a bit stiffer defense with Q-Rich in there and we can take advantage of Miami’s depth issues with four scorers in our second unit.

Turk and Q-Rich can take turns in the Bron-o-Matic meat grinder, but who guards Wade?
Can we move Duhon to the two with Arenas at point at times to stop the bleeding or is Duhon just too small/slow?

We could try Q-Rich on Wade and Turk on LeBron. At least we get a bit of a size advantage there (but we’ll be slow, slow, slow).

It’s also go-time on Earl Clark. Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee we get a quality big. Especially now that we have even more need and are looking crazy desperate.
